I am looking for Songs that could bei summed up as "Apocalyptic Revenge Fantasy". Imagine you have been wronged in a serious way and are expecting divine punishment to be handed down. I would Like Songs with that Vibe. Examples: Nina Simone - Pirate Jenny Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads will roll Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising

This feels like a weird ask because I'm pretty sure this song was written explicitly for a long-running UK murder mystery TV show but I can't get it out of my head, so anything else out there that's like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiQ0ZxuBr9A basically, ominous folk ballads, I guess?

There is a whole sorta genre called murderfolk, just search Spotify or YouTube for playlists. But also bands like the Pine Box Boys, .357 String Band, Jayke Orvis, The Goddamn Gallows, and Slim Cessnas Auto Club/Munly and the Lupercalians to name a few have some stuff like this. They all are more on the bluegrass/old time/rockabilly/Gothic country spectrum.

I'm looking for more alternative country, but probably with a skew towards the Alternative - Wednesday (and MJ Lenderman's solo record) were the band that led me this way, alongside reading that Dinosaur Jr were partially envisioned as a loud country band along with The Replacements dalliances with country. I also enjoy Wilco, Uncle Tueplo, went through a big Calexico phase and have been enjoying Lucinda Williams. I tend to bounce off things that are quieter a bit more - I'm more about the squealing double-stops and slide over layers of fuzz. Whiskeytown are a name that keep coming up, but Ryan Adams gives me the ick.

You might check out It Still Moves from My Morning Jacket. They could scratch that itch. Drive-By Truckers is probably going to be your jam, and maybe some Old 97's.

Tennessee & That Much Further West are great albums but honestly I love their whole discography. Check out Neko Case if you haven't before. Middle Cyclone is where I started with her. The other album that came to mind is Cross Canadian Ragweed's Mission California.

There's a good country thread here that has documented a bunch of that stuff. But the bands mentioned already like Lucero, Driveby Truckers, and Cross Canadian Ragweed are a good place to start. See also: Wrinkle Neck Mules, Son Volt, Slim Cessnas Auto Club, Turnpike Troubadors, Blue Mountain, and Split Lip Rayfield.

Well, I was gonna say Lucero, but Lucero was already said multiple times. I dig Lydia Loveless. Warning, her last album is all about divorce. Give Boy Crazy a listen to. I'd also suggest checking out Chuck Ragan.

What are some good albums to check out if I’m looking for more downbeat electronic chill music like Portishead’s Dummy or Air’s Moon Safari? Sometimes I put on the lofi beats YouTube channel to scratch this itch, and it does a good enough job but the songs are missing some unidentifiable 90’s flavor to them

GusGus - Polydistortion is a companion piece to Air's Moon Safari in my mind, listened to those cds nonstop in 98. Hooverphonic too - Blue Wonder Power Milk I practically wore out. And the one-and-done Mono - Formica Blues is that chill vibe infused with a retro note. Reminds me of the Secret Agent soma.fm channel and honestly it's completely unknown but is an all-time top 5 trip-hop album. All the above are from 1997-98 so they're authentically late 90s sounding. regulargonzalez fucked around with this message at 17:41 on Aug 12, 2023 |
