A bit of this, a bit of the internet giving deranged sadists other outlets, spree killing being more en vogue, the end of the leaded gas era, and probably a bunch of other factors of varying importance, some probably wildly unintuitive.

Many murders don't get solved, but that doesn't mean the unsolved cases are randomly distributed--that any random murder has the same chance of leading to an arrest. So technology catching them early isn't necessarily incompatible with an overall lovely clearance rate.

According to the FBI, there have been about 250,000 unsolved murders in the U.S. since 1980 and the vast majority of them are related drugs/street crime (both killing people connected to it and random bystanders).

There probably are still some "serial killers" involved with drug and gang-related activities, but those aren't who we typically picture when we think about serial killers. The son of Sam or Zodiac killer types seem to have legitimately decreased for some reason (getting caught earlier, becoming spree killers instead of serial killers, etc.) in the last few decades. The fact that the overall murder rate was plummeting almost uninterrupted from ~1994 through 2019 probably helped too.

Iirc that was how Petraeus got caught in his affair (saved Gmail drafts)

Petreus and Broadwell both did that with their emails to communicate during their affair and that was how they had all of his leaks documented.

What made it even more ridiculous is that this was a common tactic that Al-Qaeda and the Taliban were using to pass messages "securely" in parts of Afghanistan and Iraq with limited internet access. But, we know that this was a tactic they used because they caught terrorist cells using this method.

So, Petreus was in charge of an anti-terrorism/anti-insurgency mission that relied on accessing messages that terrorists groups sent this way to break up cells... and then used that same method to hide his affair/leaks from the Army and assumed it would never get found out.

Ok, what do we think, that the number of killers actually decreased that much or that the number of serial killers was just wildly overestimated in the past?

Probably just that cops have lowered their standards for hiring, given one of the old sure fire tells for serial killers was “unable to get into the police or military” 🙃

In general it's safe to assume that nothing you enter into a large website is ever truly deleted. When you click the delete button, it just gets marked as "do not show" and shuffled off to an archive. Part of this is so they can fulfill court orders like this one well into the future, and part of it is that deleting stuff from a massive database is a technically more complex and pitfall-prone issue than you'd think

Also if the service doesn't use end-to-end encryption (or if they claim to but you don't fully trust them), they and the cops can read your DMs

The FBI went to serve a warrant to search the house of a man in Utah who had allegedly been planning to assassinate Alvin Bragg by ambushing him in a parking lot with a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm and made threats to assassinate Joe Biden.

When they went to serve the warrant, he attacked the FBI agents (not specified if it was with a weapon) and he was shot to death.

FBI fatally shoots man in Utah who allegedly threatened Biden, Alvin Bragg and others

The FBI shot and killed a man Wednesday while executing a search warrant in Provo, Utah, federal officials said.

The investigation involved the suspect making alleged threats against politicians and public figures, including President Joe Biden and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, according to charging documents obtained by NBC News.

The suspect was identified in charging documents as Craig Deleeuw Robertson.

quote:

“I’ll be waiting in the courthouse parking garage with my suppressed Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm to smoke a radical fool prosecutor that should never have been elected,” the charging documents said. “I want to stand over Bragg and put a nice hole in his forehead with my 9mm and watch him twitch as a drop of blood oozes from the hole as his life ebbs away to hell!”

quote:

On Monday, Robertson allegedly made a threat saying, “I hear Biden is coming to Utah. Digging out my old Ghille suit and cleaning the dust off the M24 Sniper rifle."

quote:

A senior administration official tells NBC News that Biden was briefed on the FBI raid Wednesday morning, ahead of scheduled events in New Mexico. The White House is otherwise referring all questions to the Justice Department.

Biden is scheduled to be in Utah this evening ahead of a public event on Thursday in Salt Lake City on veterans health care.

In a statement, the FBI said it “is reviewing an agent-involved shooting which occurred around 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in Provo, Utah.”

“The incident began when special agents attempted to serve arrest and search warrants at a residence. The subject is deceased,” the FBI said.

The agency added the incident is under review by the FBI’s Inspection Division. No agents were injured.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Building new cities with forward thinking urban planning wouldn't be the worst thing if it meant getting around NIMBY bs and designing without car-centric hellscapes. Not that Trump's plan would be such cities and of course ignoring that cities exist where they are for a host of geographic and geological reason.
