It's a bit of a dying industry and what's out there seems to pay less and less. A lot of these jobs are filled by recent graduates who think it'll be fun and will work for less money rather than someone like me who has experience and wants to be paid for it. A lot of managers honestly think that layout, design and production are easy. I've hit up all the places that are fairly close by and worked with a few of them. For really lovely pay.

I don't work in print shops but I used to work in inks research and my impression was that the only positions with any staying power in that field are the actual printers themselves, which is one of those things you just have to do til you get good at, which makes replacing people hard. You can get random to do it but your prints will be all hosed and off alignment. But for something that could theoretically be outsourced or done for cheaper because you think the public are apes too dense to notice? Why not?

Which is roughly what I lived on, after taxes, about 15-ish years ago working full time in a tiny town with a job within walking distance, which means I didn't have a car to pay for and cost of living was relatively low. And even then this was getting paid NYS minimum wage which at least was better than federal, which still hasn't budged.

A lot of it is entirely clip art and stock photo driven too and all I can compare it to is fast food preparation or something like an assembly line. Everyone seems to want their poo poo to look good and professional but gently caress if anyone wants to pay for it or have me spend more than 15 minutes on something. I've posted about it in other threads here like the Dumb poo poo Your Job Does and the Tech Nightmare threads but it's The last sign shop I worked at wanted a "graphic designer" and since I was and also had production experience, I got the job. But he alloted 15 or 20 minutes to any job and REALLY wanted someone to load media into the printer and poo poo like that. There was very little "design" involved at all and what time I did spend was almost always fixing customer's files to make them printable or making 4 rounds of changes to their order. ... Sorry for the derail but to tie it into the thread, I can say with 100% certainty that the worst design jobs I was given were always, without fail, people who wanted US flag art, something with a gun, anything related to Jesus and a lot of camo patterns or thin blue line poo poo. These people have more ways to redesign the American Flag than I have hairs on my head and they always look like poo poo. What they like to do is take 4 or 5 things they like and then cram them into the United States flag template. So we get some fish on half the stripes, guns on the other ones, crosses instead of stars (with the wrong number of them) and one stripe is blue or some poo poo. I don't know why these people hate the regular US Flag so much but they're pretty Betsy Ross 2.0 about it. The job that finally made me quit the industry was a black and white flag with a hunting camo pattern on it and the guy wanted me to somehow work some deer antlers into it and set some type in circle around it in an all caps calligraphy font like Zapf Chancery to where there was no way I couldn't make it come out ugly. He also wanted it to fit his rear windshield and didn't understand that when you stretch a circle design out horizontally it becomes an ellipse. SO I said gently caress it.

It's horrible to see all these fuckin people who have decided that the nice normal regular flag no longer gets their dicks hard or their pussy wet. They have to have a separate and defaced flag. I actually think this is great because now you can easily narrow down what kind of rear end in a top hat or psycho someone is by their complicated flag variant. Maybe if they all dive down this path long enough we can reclaim the actual flag and I won't start feeling nervous any time I see an American flag being flown. Also if you are feeling spicy you can tell them that their blue line etc is a violation of the flag code and how you wish people would show more respect for our country's flag.

I find the number of flags to be more informative than the style of any single flag 1 flag: this guy went to a trucker rally or state fair and bought a thing. Regular Fox News enjoyer. Probably a Snek flag or a "Trump 2024 flag". Has doubts about the 2020 election but has privately accepted that Biden won and that blame for the loss ultimately lies with Trump. May or may not own a pickup. 2 flags: Fox News lost its punch, now using OANN, has responded to at least 1 WinRed email. Has at least 1 blue line flag or sticker (flag stickers do not count as flags). 3 flags: point of no return. Has completely closed off all media from non-right wing sources. Can not be reached through traditional media channels. Will continue to later stages without intervention from a close relative. 4 flags: Was fired from his job because of the Biden recession (HR fired him for making sexual comments to customers). Lives with his parents or in their house if they died from Covid or opiate overdose. After getting fired, he went on a 2-week bender reading every far-right website he can find. Biden stole the election. Biden actually died from Covid in December 2021 and all of the videos are generated with AI and the audience are actors. A council including Bill Gates, George Soros, Hunter Biden, and Xi Jinping are now running the country. 5+ flags: Has lost all grip on reality. Has made specific verbal or written threats to at least 1 local government official. Thinks Trump is running a fully-staffed shadow government from MAL and will give the FBI a codeword in a speech when it is time to arrest the Biden administration and restore the second Trump administration. Has been signing laws and executive orders all this time that will go into effect immediately.

Red line for fire, orange for rescue, yellow for security/dispatch, green for rangers/military, blue for cops, purple for CCW. They're just slowly awkwardly building a rainbow American flag, so why not set up a kiosk selling rainbow flags with "LGB" on them at the next trump rally?

My 70 year-old dad is liberal, and unlike most Boomers actually managed to hate Reagan his whole presidency, but he IS a boomer, and served in the Guard, and is kind of corny about the flag - he was telling me last night about coming home from a deployment (Desert Storm) and getting off the plane, seeing a flag at the airfield waving against a perfect blue sky, and how much it meant to him after spending months in the horror show that is Saudi Arabia, and he teared up a little. (Over 30 years later!) Yeah, he fuckin' hates that blue line poo poo. American flag clothing, too.

He also pointed out an interesting thing that I had never really thought about before - in the Vietnam era American flag clothing was a trend among anti-war activists, and outraged conservatives because at the time they still believed in "flag code." It's weird how that poo poo reconfigures itself. I guess that's what happens when your political movement is reactionary.

(Over 30 years later!) It's not a surprising view or an uncommon one. People want to believe in the fundamental potential of the USA, and the flag represents that nation. It's just been tainted from the start by genocidal maniacs from its inception. It's also a bit of jealousy for other nations that wave their flags. Putting flags on everything is a red flag regardless of where you are but a lot of nations can wave theirs and not get side eyed too hard because they weren't an apartheid state within living memory. Well, aside from SA, but they handled that problem better than we did.

The Red lines are supposed to represent the blood sacrificed to found the nation, so changing them to black is deeply, deeply disrespectful. And of course recoloring a *white* line is no accident.

quote:Lego did a study when they created the Lego Friends line for girls where they discovered that when a boy plays with a toy of a character, he tries to become that character but when a girl does the same thing, she tries to make the character become her. So if you give a boy a Batman toy, he's going to want to know about Batman, and talk like Batman when he plays with the toy. The little girl on the other hand is going to make Batman go shopping, bake cookies, or go to the prom. That's not to say there's exceptions on both sides but that's the data that allowed Lego to get a foothold on the girls' market after decades of failed attempts.
