How to get wealthy as a lawyer: nepotism your way into a large firm, work 80-100 hrs/week for a decade, maybe by then your nepotism pal will retire and make you partner

No man that's just a sorting algorithm and AI would gently caress it up.

I asked GPT to order an unsorted table by a specific column and it completely hosed it up.

I can’t conceive of anyone besides the rich getting a teenager a car

When I was that age in the mid 2000s it was pretty normal for kids to have a lovely car. This was not a particularly affluent area either, used cars were just kind of cheap

do kids not get cars these days? or do you mean when their parents buy it for them vs. buying it for themselves?

100% real. Idaho couldn’t claw back any of the money because our mother in law didn’t have any tangible assets to claw back. States hate this one weird trick!

There should be a service or educational series that teaches people how to gently caress over the government to avoid clawbacks. Transfer those assets super early!

I’m sure cars from the 60s would not have been that expensive in 90s dollars if I bought when I was 16.

My first car in high school had been my grandmother's car (1992 Pontiac Grand Am); she lived with us but had to stop driving for medical/age reasons, so I got the car but had to take her to all of her appointments, shopping, etc.

I wish I still had that car.

for a good time, compare average-sized 1960s cars to average-sized 2020s cars

Everyone likes to talk about the luxury boats from that period as being huge but for every Fleetwood limo there were a thousand Dodge Darts or a hundred Corvairs.

growing up my dad would just buy a $500 car once a year from a buy here pay here since they'd never pass the next inspection and he couldn't afford anything else, that's $1000 today with inflation but still way cheaper than the 6 or 7 times more expensive lovely beater cars today. soon poor people will have to just walk everywhere again since public transit is getting shittier and even the worst cars are unaffordable, I guess that's one way to solve traffic

What if Your Town Doubled as a Private Power Grid? posted:

Two-thirds of North Americans are at risk of energy shortfalls this summer, according to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, a nonprofit regulatory authority. Traditionally, homeowners buy generators as a backup power source. But developers are finding that energy-resilient homes and communities are powerful marketing tools to lure buyers and renters.

This is where the future is headed. I'd bet that in 20 years all the new tract home developments will have neighborhood-level backup power. Rich people in older houses will all have their own backup power. Once everyone who matters is isolated from power outages, the grid will be allowed to rot and collapse and those without backup power will experience multiple weeks without power annually.

My mother in law in Texas already has experienced more than a week in total without power just on that year with the cold winter.

That's one of the greatest vehicles ever made and I'm still pissed mine got wrecked. A neighbor has one in the same color and it makes me sad to go by it. 95% of the parts are Toyota but it was sold at Pontiac prices, was basically just a corolla hatchback that could fit my bicycle inside it with the back seats down + had rails on top for a kayak, got 30+ mpg.

The hvac broke constantly since that was the pontiac part of it.
