On PC my install currently, after all of the patches, is 11.4 GB total. Not sure if that helps answer the question but between the original install (whose size I can’t recall), the 6-7 GB patch this morning and the 5-6 GB patch this afternoon, it doesn’t look like the patches purely add to the overall file size.

That's what I assumed. Thanks!

Not me, I have always been vocal about how I like Quake 2. I am feeling a little vindicated because the remaster is making people look past IMO really minor things like the lack of muzzle flashes and the machine gun recoil and see that there was actually something good going on with the game.

I think there's a lot to like about it and it was my first online/deathmatch game and I was very into that for a few years, so it'll always have a place in my heart.

That said, civvie was right about it being kind of homogenous without any highs or lows. It's almost always good but doesn't have any real standout moments.

edit I understand the inventory system and why that was considered an upgrade but I think placing powerups in a strategic location when it's going to be useful and having it kick in right away is going to be more fun than just scattering them around and trusting the player to know "ah, this may be a big fight, I should use quad damage," especially when there aren't really any big rampage moments.

Quake 2 is cool because it’s a maximalisation of Carmack’s old “story in a video game is like story in a porno movie” adage. It’s a “video game a guy plays in a TV show” type FPS. It is best enjoyed by opening the server browser and just randomly joining a mission/deathmatch in progress and then mindlessly blasting until you get bored of hearing the chaingun sound and HUP. No need to think harder than that. Welcome to the machine.

I will say the Quake 2 remaster has the best loving explosions I've seen in forever. More games need the fluffy cloud explosion aesthetic.

This is a bizarre take because the criticism I feel like I've seen a lot is that Quake 2 is boring because it was so bound by its setting and story which limited how wild the enemies and levels could be, and so it was too samey all the way through.

The ultimate expression of Carmack's philosophy would just have the excuse-story of "you are fight man. you look for weapons and fight things. you travel the dimensions in search of stronger foes to fight" and it would just have whatever monsters and weapons and levels the crew felt like making on any given day.

It probably wouldn't be bad but it wouldn't be Quake 2. Quake 2 had a several page story in the manual which I think is way beyond the sort of "excuse story" a porno has

Honestly even having the game be 80% techbase could still be a cool game. If you're taking the premise that the cosmic horrors from the first game came through the slipgate that also brought the Strogg you could do some cool stuff where partway through Earth's counteroffensive the same cosmic horrors spill through and you get stuck in the middle between them and the Strogg. You could then have some cool bits in the last third where you go through the slipgates and end up in these other horrifying realms from q1. Fighting through the corpse of Shub-Niggurath to bring something back to take on Makron or something.

I also think the sci-fi setting forced some changes like nailgun -> machine gun, which is just not as interesting, both conceptually and mechanically. The nailguns firing 3d nails that have travel time are just a superior game weapon to the hitscan mgs. The laser gun sort of does the nailgun thing, but the ammo is a lot scarcer and I feel like I need to save energy for the shield, so I end up never firing it.

The super shotgun is pretty ok where it is, but I think the pump shotgun needs to fire faster.

I don't really see how Quake2 was any more limited with it's enemy design then Doom, both in terms of demons vs. alien-machine hybrids, and the actual rosters, to a degree. The levels I agree a bit more on.

Quake 2 feels like the halfway point between the weird and fantastical early FPS games like Quake and the modern military shooter, and yeah the goth industrial techbase environments get exceedingly samey midway through, but it still works well as a fast shooter (no reloading!) that vibes well with the extremely metal environments and great music.

Well doom had demons, of which there are several different "species" that all look drastically different and then they slapped some cybernetic stuff on the demons.

Quake 2 has mostly different kinds of dudes with cybernetic stuff slapped on them. There's a skinny guy with a gun arm, and a buff guy with a gun arm. And then there's a buff guy with two gun arms. Then theres a buff guy with sword arms. Then there's a flying guy with no arms. Etc.

Edit: The biggest sin is the amount of hitscan enemies. It was also a problem in Doom, most people despised levels with too many gunners. Quake 2 is like 60% hitscan all the way through, which leads to lots of corner peak-a-boo instead of arena sprinting and dodging.

Quake 2 is fun in the way that the original Super Mario Bros is fun. Occasionally you just want to have the most distilled unelaborated take on the genre that you can possibly achieve and for that, it's good. The remaster put just enough shine on it to keep me interested for a few hours. I still think it's a very poor followup to Quake 1.

I got further into quake 2 and I'm noticing the areas are a lot brighter than they were originally, like they took lessons from Quake 2 RTX and made everything during the day. The brightness option is on the lowest setting.

Also quake 4 is the worst quake. 2 is better than it. I prefer the original quake atmosphere over oorah space marines.

Quake II was supposed to launch a new IP but eventually they just said 'gently caress it, it's Quake II' The top contender for the name was 'Wor' but there was already a game called Wizards of Wor. Seems like something could have been worked out but maybe it would have been too expensive since they were minor celebrities already.

The remaster is very good and impressive, but Quake 2 is still Quake 2 and I got bored halfway through the prison level. They should add a toggle to prevent the music from turning off after you complete the objectives in a map. Heading back to the exit with no music just really makes everything seem even duller than it already does, even when new spawns jump out to fight you.

I always heard they were supposed to be Strogg but I have a hard time seeing it. They sound the part but don't look it

Plus they're carrying weapons! Strogg don't carry weapons

edit: I mean the player Strogg in Quake Wars and the Tactical Strogg in Quake 4 carried guns, but those came way after

This could just be me mis-remembering but it also seems that Q2 is the genesis of monster closets, at least for id. Quake II is a perfectly fine game and indeed most studios would kill to have a game that good, it just lacks some of the creative spark that makes the classic Doom games or the original Quake so iconic, particularly when a lot of games in the 15 years following Quake II would end up borrowing so much from it in terms of both gameplay and aesthetics(for example there is a lot of Quake II DNA in the Gears of War series)
