Yeah, and for good reason. Apparently Japan's damage control procedures and skills were a lot weaker than the US Navy's[1], so I wouldn't be surprised if they simply didn't conceptually believe or accept that catastrophic damage could be repaired surprisingly quickly.

The naval war in the pacific makes for fantastic reading, and if anyone is even remotely interested, I wholeheartedly recommend James Hornfisher's Neptune's Inferno about the Battle of Guadalcanal and Jonathan Parshall's Shattered Sword about the Battle of Midway. Both are also available as audio books.

[1] not by accident, and not for free. The US Navy learned the hard way that good damage control requires a LOT of work, practise and institutional change, but they got unbelievably good at it. The USS Enterprise earned the nickname "The Grey Ghost" because the Japanese thought they had sunk her several times, only for her crew to heroically patch her up, limp back to port, get repaired in record time, and then turn up to save the day.

The valiant defence of the escort carrier group by destroyers and destroyer escorts at the battle off samar puts the entire thing in perspective, 7 destroyers and destroyer escorts managed to hold off an entire IJN task force of heavy cruisers and battleships by essentially being impossible to kill. ships were repeatedly "knocked out" according to japanese lookouts only to appear out of smoke 15 minutes later and execute torpedo runs. Absolutely insane stuff.

There was also an instance where a supply boat managed to hold of a IJN heavy cruiser with a single deck gun because the Japanese were thinking they were up against a fleet.

Shattered Sword and some of the other recommendations from the history book thread and Warship thread are really good reads.

Yeah, the Battle off Samar is such insane poo poo that if they made a Hollywood movie about it, people would complain about Hollywood making up outrageous stuff that could never happen in real life*. James Hornfisher's (the same guy who wrote the excellent Neptune's Inferno) The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors goes in depth to the craziness and is a great read I would definitely recommend to anyone.

* a similar thing happened with Midway. There's a scene where a Japanese plane is attempting to ram the Enterprise, when a deck engineer jumps into the rear gunner seat of a landed Dauntless and manages to shoot the Japanese plane down. People complained about that being dumb made up poo poo, which is a gross disservice to Bruno Gaido who literally did that in real life.

I always have a laugh when i see the Amatsukase, it’s the essential front-fell-off boat since literally half of it got blown up and the IJN just slapped some plates on whatever was left of it to form a new bow.

The sinking of the Yorktown inadvertently led to the inviciblity of the Essex class, as the Yorktown's crew were on a whole other level when it came to damage control practices and innovations - the large numbers of survivors were spread around the fleet, taking their knowledge and experience with them and applying it to the new floating airfields being pumped out at a rate of one a month.

No sign of any anti air fire on those images. Usually they fire off some missiles so they don't have to explain those full missile racks afterward.

edit: looking at the footage it seems more like an exercise. That would explain the lack of anti air fire, the relaxed atmosphere on the beach and that it takes place in broad daylight.

Napoleon was the one with the sleeping giant quote. Yamamoto's usage of the phrase has no evidence and may have been made up for Tora! Tora! Tora!

That is not to say that Yamamoto wasn't clear that fighting the US was a really bad idea. However, by reading his actual writing on it, you can tell he wrote it in such a political way that would not cost him his post, it was easy to not read it as a warning.

CommieGIR posted:

Yamamoto said that the only way to win would be to take Guam, Hawaii, and dictate peace in the White House itself. Otherwise there could be no victory against the US.

The translated quote is:

Should hostilities once break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians [who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war] have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices.

He was clear.
