It's amazing how durable the back and forth about whether new fallout games are fun or made by satan is. It was going strong when I stopped reading the fallout thread years and years ago, and that was more than a decade after FO3's launch. I assume they're still going on about it to this day, and it keeps flaring up in every other thread every time anyone mentions the franchise.

That's such an incredible relic of old Youtube. A video length under 10 minutes, 480p, kinda scored by System of a Down. It's all there.

A big part of the reason I never clicked on with the Bethesda Fallouts was the degree to which the worlds felt like theme park kitsch. In FO 1, 2, and NV people are living in ruins, but there are also attempts and restoration and new construction scattered around. They feel like worlds people are living within and improving, whereas FO 3 and 4 felt more like a surface level aesthetic.
A gameplay part of that is why for all the good stuff in New Vegas, "Bulk ammo: The ammo that breaks your gun slightly faster and might also deal less damage" seems mostly there to make ammo crafting look cooler.

Civilization has figured out having a army with working helicopters again, but have also gotten worse at bullets and laser batteries than before the NCR existed? You all forgot how to kill deathclaws with buckshot, no wonder you have trouble with the legion.

To be fair milsurp of questionable quality that may damage your firearm isn't exactly super rare in real life, so I certainly didn't feel like 'I'm cutting corners to try and stretch my resources out further' was dragging me out of my ~immersion~

Whats especially weird to me is Beth manages to answer that for oblivion and skyrim, but somehow completely blanks on it for fallout.
Its jarring to walk a few minutes in one direction from one town to the next and both are so self contained that they might as well not exist in the same world.

And thats the biggest issue with Bethesdas fallouts. Its a collection of unrelated vignettes. Whys the vault full of heavily armed mafia not a bigger force in the wasteland? If the Gunners are so militarized why are they not more organized and are just indistinguishable from raiders aside from using robots and energy weapons?

fallout 1 was earnest science fiction with schlocky elements, usually played straight. fallout 2 was a lot goofier but still concerned with putting together a world that holds up if you think about it for half a second. same with fallout tactics. but with bethesda fallouts, they never let you forget that this is a video game, these are assets placed here by a level designer for you to see, you are on a loot treadmill and everything but the level geometry and NPC dialogue is scaled to how powerful your character happens to be in this moment. and there are loads of games with better shooting, movement, and level geometry out there. why not just play borderlands?

edit: oh right, mods thread. hey is there a modpack that makes new vegas not ugly so i can finally get into it?
