Do you think Ukraine is doing these strikes on the bridge during the daylight on purpose for the extra effect of visual proof for people standing on the beach? Seems like most of these strikes are taking place during the day, or maybe it's just the ones I'm remembering.

Also, the smoke gives them a chance to reposition the bridge. Just wait until they move it away from the mainland, the Ukrainians wouldn't dare attack it then

Add a sick jump to it for Russian drivers to feel something. If it’s not connected to the mainland, it’s not a bridge, therefore not worth attacking. But with sick jump ramps? Russian as gently caress

Smoke screens for stationary targets were a thing in WW2. I don't have any idea if it's what's happening in these photos, but it's not an absurd idea out of hand.

well yeah but precision guided munitions were not* a thing in WW2. it's not like most of Ukraine's weapons that can be used against the bridge are necessarily visually guided, marine drones notwithstanding and maybe not even then. Smokescreens aren't guaranteed to be silly but it probably is here.

The remote-controlled explosive boats used in the last attack are apparently visually guided. In theory a dense and large enough smokescreen could be effective.

Couldn't you drive the boat into the smokescreen, slow down, and scan for a piling? I guess that gives Russia more time to destroy the nautical drone, but on the other hand, once you find two pilings, you have a pretty good idea where to blow up.

You have gps jammers, radar can be jammed, inertial guidance is expensive and finicky, but good luck cooling down a sun-heated mass of concrete above a cold sea. Popping flares is just anticipating the other side’s treacherous next moves.

The smoke is something they've set up and tested both on the bridge and in sevastopol several times. Presumably it's to throw off Storm Shadow which uses imaging infrared for target recognition and terminal guidance.

If Ukraine are throwing a couple of S200s towards the bridge it may be as much to determine where AD and the smoke generators are located as anything else

The bridge just can't catch a break. Smoking is the leading cause of explosions in Crimea and Russia, and it has first-hand, concrete evidence that explosions cause stress and more smoking.
