i want to know who cast matt mercer as ganondorf in a zelda game and just had him do like, a vaguely gruff voice. of all the voices to choose for ganondorf how do you not aim for the deepest and growliest voice possible. one of the most defining things about ganondorf is that he should always sound like his throat is a chasm of darkness

My all-time favourite scream in an RPG-adjacent game is the one that happens in the second phase of the pre-Shadowlord-Castle in Nier, because it happens just after the cutscene ends so you don't expect the voice acting to kind of keep going. And they re-recorded it for the re-release! It's weird! I like the original scream much more for how surprising it is. also i'm not sure it was a company wide meeting so much as, that era of gust was relatively prone to devs putting in odd stuff and being pretty transparent about it. same thing happened with some of the arland trilogy and the recurring thing is that most of the time they did that i don't think it was very well received by anyone at all lol. if they were trying to capture more of the otaku market with those choices or something i don't think it worked out

ar tonelico is just funny in general cause it was kinda ground up supposed to be their series pulling in more of an otaku audience with more of a gal game influence but i think most of what it pulled in was people who liked the singers they got for it, the weird language they constructed from scratch for it and how the core of the games' writing was genuinely pretty empathetic and sweet about stuff a lot of games didn't really explore with much nuance, at least not among home console rpgs. i'm not sure why gust handled the further entries the way they did cause they seemed to not really get that the audience it was big with wasn't purely dudes even though i've never really seen it be that big among the audiences they did seem to be aiming for

Ar Tonelico 1 sometimes just felt weirdly like one of those VNs that threw in the porn to help get sales. Like it doesn't have actual porn, but that gal game otaku-pandering stuff is just layered on top of such a neat setting that's got this great mix of being unexpectedly dark but having such a cutesy and upbeat presentation, and had so much work put into developing it. Like you can easily imagine someone saying at a meeting, "This is a great setting, but it needs boobies to help sell it," and thus the reyvateil harem happens and all the innuendo around dives.

Out of curiousity I took a gander at what japanese twitter folks have been saying about Blue Reflection recently and I don't know whether this is an indication of anything at all but one of the first posts I saw was someone saying they were trying out the gacha but were wondering if it wasn't popular because no one on their TL was talking about it
