you're right he's more like proto-prog less facetiously, I don't think the same thing is happening w/ hendrix/clapton as w/ vai, malmsteen, petrucci, satriani, polyphia/animals as leaders (which yeah is totally a thing) - people just like classic rock with good guitar, it's a similar appeal to led zeppelin imo. or dire straits. (clapton being an rear end in a top hat colors this a bit) Weather report I have only ever encountered as good jazz fusion supergroup w/ Shorter getting talked up most but I could see Jaco worship being a thing. but then the only people I know who like fusion are musicians or otherwise overly studied so maybe there is something there. the prog-fusion continuum maybe

I like Jaco on the first Pat Metheney record, to a point. That record is kind of rough but a cool listen to hear them working off one another, but there’s like a ton of times where the bass is trying to take over and it sounds busy.

The BOD was so thoroughly wrecked and repaired multiple times by the end of JP's life that it's the bass of Theseus at this point anyway, whereas Greeny is a unique piece by itself.

A lot of people suggested trying to hear music differently while listening, tapping plucking rhythms, doing synchronized left/right hand exercises, and stuff like that. Not Jeff Berlin. Jeff Berlin said something to the effect of: you can only get better at your instrument and at musicianship while you are playing. He may have also said you owe it to yourself to always travel with your instrument. I don’t remember. I remember thinking that was a pretty stupid and shortsighted thing to say at the time, just two years into bass guitar and fresh off five years of progressively larger and lower pitched woodwind instruments. I remember a lot of the other people they talked to mentioned listening to music. Really paying attention to it, internalizing the feel, and how I hear music in terms of feel myself. I moved on and forgot about the article, just playing and practicing and learning music, feeling good about things. A few years later, I’m guessing not long after it was posted, I saw this performance video: https://youtu.be/GiC5Xc5f7HE To this day, I occasionally think about the quote and that video in the same context, and I still laugh at how hard someone can miss the point of music generally and that original composition specifically.

i have tired of a lot of the "good" guitarists people hold up as paragons of the art i tried getting into various levels of wanky music at various points and it rarely held my interest in the same way as it would for devotees of the stuff but whenever one of these guys puts out a really good song, I'm right there cheering along and this isn't some kind of demand for formalist pop structure only, I will listen to some wildly out playing but i always feel like the best moments for these player's players types is when they take that high level of technique and match it to something that stays with the listener and doesn't just become audio wallpaper

Andy Timmons is just about the only "guitar player's guitar player" I know that actually makes listenable, good music. He can play as well as anybody but chooses to stick with melody 99% of this time. You can hum along with basically anything he does. It also doesn't hurt that he's got some of the best tone I've ever heard. Here he is on That Pedal Show where he's demoing his rig and just happens to make up a tune on the spot that stopped the show. Video link is timestamped a minute or two beforehand for context. I must not be cultured, I've only heard of Marcus Miller in that list. Hence: Christ does this suck (it's a Sheehan vid), especially the first couple of minutes. Really highlights how playing a bass like a guitar is not an ideal way to do it. It can be done but yeesh. Santa's Bill Dickens clip is a fun palate cleanser start, and I always find myself coming back to this Entwhistle isolated Bass video anyways for inspiration, really needed it after that Billy Sheehan solo.
