Most people just Aren't. That's why derren brown puts hundreds of people through some sort of testing before he gets around to hypnotising them. It doesn't work on everyone no matter how fast you swing the watch in front of their face. Also it's very much a spectrum, some people are more susceptible than others

Manning was definitely a better person than Glinner though. My understanding was that it works by allowing a person a rationale for exploring a part of themselves that they for whatever reason do not feel able to explore under normal conditions, by presenting that part as being external, caused by the hypnosis, so it isn't really "them" doing it, and so it doesn't reflect on their "real self" what they do while under the alternate persona. This would presumably necessitate believing on some level that hypnosis is "real" in the sense that it represents a true external force capable of compelling you to do things, and having a desire to do that thing on some level anyway. Situational pretexts like being in a room full of people doing the same thing can also help, or being on stage where everyone is expecting you to act a bit weird. I would expect the main crossover would be with people who are susceptible to stuff like mass religious mania, speaking in tongues etc, or who believe their cult leader has magical powers. And also people who do things like acting, or other kinds of performance where there is the concept of the "reality of the stage" or however you think of it, the idea that there are assigned places and conditions wherein a person can behave bizzarely and everyone goes along with it. There's an old book out there, somewhere, about the concept of games and how they operate on a collective suspension of disbelief, and that shares an element with things like theater.
