The Heat Health Alert system will operate year-round, but the core alerting season will run from 1 June to 30 September. The system will offer regional information and advice to the public and send guidance direct to NHS England, the government and healthcare professionals.

Individuals can sign up to receive alerts directly here, and people can specify which region they would like to receive alerts for.

There will be four alert colours, with green indicating no risk to health:

- yellow means the heat could affect the particularly vulnerable - over-65s and those with an underlying health condition

- amber means the impact could affect the wider population and is likely to be felt across the whole health service

- red means a significant risk to life even for healthy people and a severe impact across all sectors would be expected

Merci, chaton!
Phonechat (Giffgaff in this case) - made an annoying discovery yesterday when for the second time recently, I got cut off mid-call with a text saying that I'd run out of credit. This despite having a plan with unlimited calls and auto credit top-up.

Turns out, buried deep in the small print, that "unlimited" ain't quite so unlimited. I already knew that premium-rate numbers didn't qualify, but surely a call to a mobile number beginning 07 does?

Nope! There's a whole swathe of "non-mobile" 07 numbers to trick you, used by answering and forwarding services for companies. These are excluded from the unlimited tariff for Reasons, and cost a ridiculous amount per minute for more Reasons. A call to a plumber yesterday burned through my entire credit in five minutes. (Why my auto top-up didn't kick in is a mystery.) It does explain how I somehow racked up £26 of extra credit costs recently, though - I had to call the insurers after someone hit my car. Surprise surprise, their number is one excluded from the unlimited tariff.

Since I don't have a landline any more (like lots of people), this is another case of lovely Britain finding new and interesting ways to rip everyone off without telling them.

Depending on the organisation, they may have an 'if calling from abroad' number which you can also use.

Those weird 07 numbers are 'personal numbers' that follow you around and been available for at least a couple of decades. Not sure how to distinguish them from mobile phone numbers - are they shorter?

Just googled, they seem to be 070- numbers. Don't know if there are any regular mobile phone numbers starting 070? I have several mobile numbers (private, general, work) and none of them have 0 as the third digit.

Anyone have experience with dongles or mobile routers for internet when travelling? We're driving to the UK in the summer and travelling around a bit while there, and my partner needs to be able to do video meetings. I know that nothing short of satellite internet is going to reliably get her online if we're out in the Highlands, but any idea what's good for areas with 4G/5G connectivity? When I search half of them are devices you rent and pay some ridiculously high daily rate for access, but I'm after something we can buy and put in our own SIM card with more reasonable data rates. I did find an £800 Netgear 5G device that fits the bill but that seems a bit steep.

We've used a few MiFis back when 4G was a lot worse than it is. One was a Vodafone branded one, one was from EE and we got them from the high street carrier shops. Both came with their own sims but you could open them up and swap them out but this was a few years ago now, I dunno if the ones that they're selling now let you do that or if they're more locked down. Looks like they're about the same sort of price they were, less than £100 but it depends on your budget i guess.

You can get second hand BT Mini Hubs for cheap. Phone without all the phone stuff, just put a SIM and battery in.

If you have 4G you should be able to do same with a phone's hotspot function, but if that won't do those might.

If it's a low signal problem then Netgear do a similar but more expensive thing with an antenna jack that you could connect a high gain directional LTE antenna to.

Thanks. I'm honestly not sure if the MiFi style hubs are any more reliable or effective than just using the phone as a hotspot, but she really doesn't want to drop out or have bad connection during a meeting so I'm trying to figure out the best method. Maybe a thing that can take an external antenna is helpful there. Is 4G reasonably widespread and dependable in the UK now? When I last lived there it was often pretty spotty outside of cities (and sometimes even inside them).

Jaeluni Asjil

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
^^^ IMHO 4G is far more reliable and available than 5G. The only time my internet plays up (other than during powercuts) is when 'they' are messing about with 5G masts. Also I can think a router would be more reliable purely because it can remain plugged in to the mains while using it. Hotspotting from your phone, not sure how long the battery would last and how long she needs to be on calls for.

I've had several mifi dongles in my time and all have been absolutely fine.

I had a Three one which I used constantly when travelling until about a year ago (purchased in 2013 for about £15 IIRC!) when I switched to Smarty for my phone SIM. Still have Three 'home hub' as my at home broadband. Also had a TPLink mini router which I used all the time in Egypt for several years (before I had a phone that could do hotspotm- ed not that that would have made a difference as the phone was in my home), because the only way I could get a signal in my ground floor flat surrounded by high buildings was to hang the SIM card (in the router) out of the window on the end of a broomstick.

Only thing to look out for - having used it without a problem for 7+ years, I was out one day and had it buried in the bottom of my handbag connected to a powerbank.
My handbag started to feel hot and when I took it out, the case of the thing was blown out.
It went back down as it cooled, but I didn't dare risk using the battery after that and had to order a replacement from AliExpress (£8 instead of the £20+ UK suppliers wanted!) which took a few weeks to arrive (thanks to covid!)

I've been using my phone as a 4G hotspot as my only internet for years. Everything in the flat that needs a connection goes through it and me and my partner are often using it simultaneously streaming different things and whatever. Seems to work fine, and is usually even faster than wired internet in my experience. As long as you're not somewhere super rural it's fine. We've had a couple of occasions where it's shat the bed for a few days when they've been working on nearby masts, but you can plan for that by having an alternative sim running a different network.

Why can't we just have BT running the whole thing with all the masts and near 100% coverage? gently caress you, that's why.
