Yeah, I've seen signs that offer to buy diabetic test strips at the exit of the drivethrough pharmacies here. It's not surprising -- those strips can run $1-$2 a strip, and a diabetic person may need to test multiple times a day.

The real money is in those new continuous glucose monitoring sensors (Dexcom G6/G7). A month's supply of those in retail costs $300-$500, but it looks like you can resell them on websites for ~$200. That's a good grift.

National Archives will make its AI use case inventory public

fedscoop.com posted:

The National Archives, the federal agency responsible for maintaining government records, plans to release an inventory of its artificial intelligence use cases on AI.gov in the coming days. The agency has already begun pilots of certain artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, so its plans to publish a public inventory mark a significant step forward for government transparency over growing use of this technology.

A 2020 executive order, EO 13960, requires federal agencies to produce inventories of their AI use case, and subsequent guidance from the CIO Council requires the lists to be published both to MAX.gov, an internal federal information sharing platform, and publicly on each agency’s website. NARA confirmed that it plans to publish a public inventory in response to questions from FedScoop.

These inventories are meant to provide insight into how the government is already using AI — and help streamline the deployment of the technology in the future. Still, as FedScoop has previously reported, compliance with this executive order has been patchwork. While some agencies have invested heavily in developing rich inventories, others have, for example, included a shuttered project and an “error,” or excluded otherwise public deployments of AI.

NARA’s announcement that it will publish its inventory on AI.gov, which includes a website that tracks federal agencies’ inventories, came after the agency previously said that its use cases were only available on the Office of Management and Budget-run Max.gov portal and “not open to the public.” NARA made its announcement after FedScoop asked OMB about NARA’s decision.

An OMB agency spokesperson said: “Agencies are required to post the full version of their AI use case inventories internally via MAX Federal Community, as well as post a public version of their inventory on their agency’s website.”

The expected disclosure is another reminder that agencies that maintain large amounts of records and documents see opportunity in artificial intelligence. The State Department, for example, is considering using AI to accelerate declassification efforts. Other agencies are now looking at AI as a way to facilitate FOIA processing.

“The National Archives is excited about the use of AI/ML/RPA and how we can utilize these technologies to help with natural language processing, search, and process automation,” said NARA CIO Sheena Burrell in a statement to FedScoop. “While we have started piloting AI/ML and RPA, we have not deployed any solutions into production yet. We’re in the process of developing the AI governance life cycle at NARA along with the evaluation criterias to assess our AI solutions for compliances in accordance with the Executive Order.”

Burrell continued: “NARA is the nation’s record keeper where we maintain billions of records. We’re trying to focus on AI use cases that will benefit researchers, our archivists, and the American public. The areas of focus are related to natural language processing, search, and our backlog reduction efforts.”

I think individual firms tried renegotiating leases, playing hardball with each other, in 2020 in NYC and found they "couldn't" for "reasons". One of their solutions after the fact was to compel the state to give them money to convert the unused office spaces into luxury apartments. It's a great, sustainable, healthy way to run things.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/maui-tourism-an-economic-mainstay-sparks-anger-amid-fire-ruin-2023-08-16/

Aug 16 (Reuters) - The incongruous sight of tourists enjoying Maui's tropical beaches while search-and-rescue teams trawl building ruins and waters for victims of the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century has outraged some residents.

They have vented on social media, posting video of tourists enjoying holiday activities like snorkeling while the death toll in the historic resort town of Lahaina passes 100 and is rising every day.

"Our community needs time to heal, grieve, and restore," Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa said on Instagram, urging tourists to cancel their trips.

Authorities and businesses have welcomed the trickle of travelers, saying it will lessen the blow to the island's economy, which relies heavily on tourism. The industry is Maui's "economic engine," generating 80% of its wealth, according to the island's economic development board.

As Maui embarks on a long, painful recovery from the fires, officials are wrestling with how to balance residents' immediate needs for housing and resources against the island's long-term financial health.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green recalled at a weekend press conference how the COVID-19 pandemic similarly forced the state to weigh the risks of allowing tourists in during a public health crisis against the harm Hawaii's economy would suffer from barring them.

"All of our people will need to survive, and we can't afford to have no jobs or no future for our children," Green said. "When you restrict any travel to a region, you really devastate its own local residents in many ways more than anyone else."

Tourism has taken a hit in the week since the wildfire devastated Lahaina, a popular vacation destination that was also home to historic sites significant to Hawaiian residents.

The number of airline passengers to Maui on Sunday was down nearly 81% compared to the same time last year, according to the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

In 2022, 2.9 million tourists visited Maui, which has a year-round population of 165,000, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau. The state tourism department reported in February that visitors spent $5.69 billion on Maui in 2022.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority now is asking visitors to avoid all non-essential travel to West Maui, the part of the island affected by the fires, so resources can be used to help locals recover.

“It is likely that a big chunk of the people who are affected, losing family members, losing family homes, it's likely a lot of them were employed by the visitor industry," tourism authority spokesperson Ilihia Gionson said.

Hotels in West Maui have temporarily stopped accepting bookings. Many are housing their employees and preparing to house evacuees and first-responders working on disaster recovery, according to the tourism authority.

The agency urged visitors to areas of Maui that did not burn - such as Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, Wailea and Makena - to contact their accommodation and ensure they could still be hosted.

"Maui is not closed," Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said at the weekend press conference alongside the governor. "Many of our residents make their living off of tourism."

Reached by phone on Tuesday, the Four Seasons Resort at Wailea Beach in South Maui said all hotel operations were running normally, but that it was encouraging tourists with August reservations to postpone their trips until the rest of the island had recovered more fully.

Occupancy at the five-star hotel had plunged "dramatically" since the fire, a front desk operator said.

Hotel operator Hilton Worldwide Holdings, which has 23 hotels throughout Hawaii, said it was waiving cancellation penalties for those traveling to, from or through all islands of Hawaii through Aug. 31.

Jack Richards, CEO of Los Angeles-based travel company Pleasant Holidays, scrambled to evacuate more than 400 customers who were on Maui during the fires. Dead phone lines and lost internet connections hampered the efforts, he said.

Most of the tourists were eventually relocated to other Hawaiian islands. Another 1,400 customers with August travel plans to Maui need to be rebooked, he said.

Tour operators who continued to offer services in or around West Maui after the fires faced a flood of criticism.

A company that held a charity snorkeling tour on Friday 11 miles (18 km) from Lahaina later issued an apology and said it was suspending operations for the time being.

The bolded parts are where I'm like :chloe:

Don't stop the tourists because the uh, island needs your money. It's for the benefit of the island and the locals you guys, ignore that most of the people in the tourism industry are most likely earning minimum wage and the rest of the money goes to shareholders and that brave CEO that I'm sure did all the work to evacuate people while probably on the mainland, which is why he gets most of the money in that company. I don't even need to see their books, that's always how it works in this mode of production.

Most of the article is from the perspective of the tourism industry and not the people asking for tourists to gently caress off for a bit. Just lol that they're acting like that industry is doing the locals any favors and that it's ultimately for their benefit even though everyone knows all the money goes to the top, and probably off island at that, while paying as little tax as they possibly can.

this happens way too often in greece after every fire season - wherever there's a fire a villa will spring up a few short years later. There are plenty of rumors/anecdotes/stories of the fires being set by land speculators to destroy the forest and then buy cheap.

My favorite rumor is that Olympia Odos helped set fires in northern peloponnisos to speed up construction of the new motorway there.

here's an old LA Times story going over it from 2007
