Good writing!

I'm thinking that Human TRO is the way to go for the Leader focus, the last iteration of this thread showed just how good that can be.

For the rest of the pilots, I'd think either of the actual skill options might be better than the SPAs or AC specialization at this point. At this early stage, staying generally good seems better than optimizing our pilot capabilities...That being said Melee comes up a lot in BattleTech and is also a cheap option. What's the SPA do?

-1 ToHit with melee attacks.

For as cheap as it is, Melee Specialist is really good.

Melee specialist is good, but that blackjack is just not a good melee mech imo. I think investing in Moon's gunnery or the sniper spa is a better move for us now. Gunnery increases are just so insanely good, and a very accurate super fast Mongoose is a nice unit.

Also voting captains take because mystery box plus potentially fun scene to read.

XR7715 – Eye of Balor (Local Name)
Fomhóraigh (Local Name), Southern Polar Canyonlands
Spinward Periphery
March 8th, 2763

For the dozenth time, Ravager asked, “Roger, Icepick, Insect—anything on your scopes? Anything at all?”

“Not a fuckin’ thing,” Icepick answered gruffly as he scanned the broken landscape ahead of him through the single sheet of transplex that made up his BattleMech’s canopy. The land ahead was broken and winding, split by occasional pillars of stone. The walls on either side were towering and oppressive, but in another fifty kilometers they’d open up. “If they escaped into the canyons, they either found a way up the far wall or they’re making better time than we are.”

“Resist the urge to rush ahead, boys,” Ravager’s heavy brogue would’ve been unmistakable even in the midst of enemy jamming. “If anyone did make it to the opens we’ll find ‘em.”

“Got something—no.” Insect corrected after just a moment. “Nevermind, just a figment of my ‘Mech’s imagination. Got a mag reading for just a sec, dead ahead. Thought it might be a boat or a hover; but there’s gently caress-all on my magres scanners now.”

Icepick toggled through his sensor modes, and regretted it almost immediately as his thermals nearly blinded him. Fortunately, this time of year the Eye of Balor could never quite peer into the bottoms of the southern polar canyons, or they’d all have been fighting the heat as well as the terrain.

“Can confirm Insect’s sensors are still hosed,” Icepick grumbled. “There’s gently caress-all out there; and thanks so much for making me toggle through my thermals. Jackass.”

“You know there’s a button that lets you switch right to magnetic resonance, yeah?” Insect’s voice held just a hint of mockery.

“I know,” Icepick slammed a fist down on the mostly empty armrest of his command couch, accidentally turning on the canopy wipers in the process. “It’s in your cockpit! You stole it, you devil, to try to fix your hosed sensors! And how has that worked out, anyway? Whole buncha fuckin’ ghosts carrying magnets in their bloody back pockets?”

“Hey—there’s that blip again.” Insect ignored him. “Ain’t going away this time. Maybe Ravager’s right and they did run the canyon? Could be one of the boats. Or a crawler.”

“If it’s another ghost, lil’ brudder,” Icepick growled an anger he didn’t really feel; “I swear on me mom’s grave I’m about to become an only child.”

Eye of Balor 2-1

“You’d think pirates would be a little more cautious about broadcasting in the clear,” Rampart broadcast on the lance’s secure channel. The enemy wasn’t too far distant; but they still seemed to be hunting something. She hadn’t caught a glimpse of them yet, but it wouldn’t be long—Obligation Lance only had a few moments before the pirates would make visual contact, but that would still be plenty of time to find a good defensive position. At least they didn’t seem to realize they’d been intercepted. “It’s not exactly difficult to isolate and secure a frequency.”

“One of them probably stole those button too,” Ironhead stifled a laugh.

Prodigal and Grandpa’s transmission lights both flashed, but it was Prodigal who spoke. Lance leader had priority. “Don’t take that for granted,” Prodigal warned as Theo’s light went out. Apparently he’d wanted to say something similar. “Banter might mean they’re oblivious; but they could also be setting us up. Would you believe Kuritan regulars broadcasting in the clear about their sensors not working?”

“Point taken, boss,” Ironhead replied. “Fight ‘em like they know we’re here.”
