Watched the original Mothra last night and holy lol they were not gun-shy about using blackface huh? All the scenes on Infant Island were so incredibly awkward. Still, I liked that there were threads (lol) of environmentalism and a critique of capitalist colonialism.

Black face was out of vogue in Hollywood by the 60s but brownface was still used. You can't expect Japan to have higher standards when racial issues are less prominent culturally.

Didn't mean to start a discussion on blackface. I am fully willing to reopen the can of worms regarding G'14 though. I just rewatched it for the first time since it was in theaters almost ten years ago. At the time I was kinda disappointed for all the typical stupid reasons (Cranston getting offed early on, not enough focus on Godzilla) but now that I've had nearly a decade to come to terms with that (and having seen its two sequels) I gotta say: it's absolutely fantastic. I'm still not prepared to say that I unconditionally love G'14 as a movie, but I definitely have more of an appreciation for it nowadays, as the Legendary series continues along its increasingly nutty track. Each successive installment is basically doubling down on the complete whackadoodle things I enjoy the least about this particular cinematic universe. G'14 by comparison actually feels like a movie that takes place in an approximation of the real world.

G14 was very intentional in conveying “awe” rather than “spectacle.” I feel the sequels reversed that and were lesser for it. The cat and mouse showing Big G was intended to make the third act that much more awe-inspiring when he fully appeared. Literally, god made manifest. None of the other movies really captured that feeling of being insignificant in the presence of these giants among us. I will concede that they should have had a better character than Generic Army Guy as the POV for the narrative beats but it’s reverence for Godzilla was well done and its dedication to the central conceit (showing him too much cheapens the impact) is commendable.

The 4K remaster of G14 looks absolutely incredible. It's also hilarious seeing them jump across the globe and go to multiple cities yet never leave Vancouver.
