I don't think Peoria is half as bad as people say it is but last time I was there the downtown looks ... Horrifyingly dilapidated. Even moreso than when I lived there.

The place is really due for a Renaissance and houses are dirt cheap there. I have been tempted to move back just for that reason

I had the dubious pleasure of growing up there and it's kind of criminal how little there is in terms of stuff to do. The old parts of town up on the bluffs are quite pretty and have a lot of older colonial style homes in shady little neighborhoods. The place deserves better.

It's at this sort of geographical black hole where it's right at this nexus between Chicago, St Louis, and Indianapolis but it's just far enough away from all of them that it isn't worth a day trip. It has Bloomington right nearby and that's the "college town" so a lot of the young people go there instead. The only real jobs there are either at one of the two humongous hospitals or Walmart.

Man I grew up in Decatur and had relatives in Peoria, so I always thought of it as the nicest place in Illinois (in comparison to Decatur of course). My family was too afraid of Chicago to go there when I was a kid.

Yeah they basically sold the entire riverfront in Peoria to that loving company and they up and left. I used to love going to the Lakeview museum but then they moved it into the new building on the riverfront and it's the ugliest building

Race-IQ guy that was getting boosted by people like Yglesias for his non race-IQ takes and tech elites took a fancy to him for all of it. Huffington Post recently did an expose on him that revealed he used to post even more explicitly racist stuff under a pseudonym. Bunch of people embarrassed themselves defending him afterwards like he'd changed his tune and matured when he's the same guy and has tweets in the past months defending the subway strangler and saying Black people should be surveilled harder to stop crime. Funnily enough the only group I saw distancing themselves from him was Bari Weiss's phony school. He was the member of some center at the real University of Texas but I don't know if they got rid of him or what.
