i would guess they are removing blocking because they couldn't figure out how to fix the performance issues in timeline rendering when you block tons of people that someone found a few months ago lol someone said it was taxing their infra?

Unlike a lot of substantial site changes, even a pretty know-nothing engineer could fairly easily just remove all buttons and API calls to the blocking functionality. It wouldn’t remove the existing blocklists that users have, but it would prevent any additions to those lists. This is right in line with right wing talking points around how freedom of speech is essentially “you HAVE to listen to me when I’m talking”
