The Raven sounds like it could be a really interesting addition as a spellcaster, but healing and Irradiate just seem too good to pass up. My understanding is that Ravens are, however, in the multiplayer Terran loadout, so anybody out there got comments on how they work in practice?

They have a skill that launches a slow moving, giant aoe bomb that homes in on its target. It's basically a micro or die skill ala nukes, where you have to pull out the targeted victim to save the unit blob.

It can deploy temporary turrets for way too much energy for what you get.

It's third skill is a little drone that shoots down enemy missile attacks for a bit that is kind of useful, but I never remember it's there.

In multi right now, I'm pretty sure it's almost a completely different unit at this point.

The current Raven still has auto-turrets but everything else is different. It has Interference Matrix, which prevents a unit from attacking or using abilities for 11 seconds; and it has anti-armor missile, which applies -2 armor to units in a fairly large AoE.

Not only that, but with auto cast they also cast it during an attack move so they don't tend to wind up at the front of forces as often.

Yeah. I always seem to go to wrap up Hanson's stuff first. They feel like an early mission chain for this story, dealing with the immediate fallout of the renewed Zerg invasion mentioned right at the start. Learning who we're fighting for (in the moral sense, not literal), before diving into the meat of the anti-Dominion action.

Also I think they're firmly Okay but kind of underwhelming missions so I like getting them out of the way.

Honestly, I tend to leave Hanson's stuff till later simply because she will continue to have commentary after every mission, and even though I know what she says, it's just force of habit to try and dig out as much extra dialogue as I can.

Well Tosh has the narrowest of leads, meaning I'll have to close the poll early for-

Intermission 11.2: Pollectric Boogaloo

You ever wonder why the mission briefing was so secretive about what we get here?

He already left the ship, I thought you -

*warning noises*

Sir, we have an incoming transmission. It's highly encrypted.

So who was the mystery sender who tried to turn us against Tosh?

None other than one November Terra, the protagonist of the ill-fated Starcraft: Ghost.

Now what would one of Mengsk's pet Ghosts have to say to me?

Tosh is lying to you.

New Folsom is full of psychopathic killers. Do you really want to release them into the galaxy?

Of course, Nova shows no actual proof of this, and expects us to take the word of a Dominion Ghost at face value. For all we know, Nova could just be trying to ensure that Raynor never gets any kind of psionic specialists.

This be the moment of truth. Make your choice.

And here's the twist: Tosh's chain has two possible finales, which determine what unit we'll get for the rest of the game. Both the Spectre and the Ghost have the usual cloak and nuke, but the Spectre has a CC ability-

-While Ghosts just deal a lot of damage.

I remain convinced that this is the one "Choose who to support" choice in Wings of Liberty where there is an objectively wrong choice.

I mean... Bisby said it. We are expected to take the word of a DOMINION GHOST, a psionic spy/assassin for Mengsk, at face value, over the word of the guy who has been hiring us for missions, filling his end of the deal and then some by actively providing mission assistance by revealing the locations of objectives on the map, and just revealing those areas on the map in general, stuck around as an extra advisor and confidant when Raynor wanted/needed to talk to him, and hasn't actually lied to us about what he is at all; at worst, he didn't mention it until asked. But when asked, he was up-front and honest about it.

It kills me to know that the Ghost is considered the better unit (The Ghost's longer attack range and Sniper provide great value later on), but I just can't say no to the Spectre and helping Tosh.

gently caress off, Nova.

(I remain convinced that the only reason Tosh didn't tell us what he needed the Jorium and Terrazine for was because Raynor never asked him, only wondered privately when told about what the stuff did.)

Ghosts are """better""" for dealing damage, but the value of crowd control cannot be overstated. As we demonstrated while Pondering The Stone, Hybrid become complete non-threats once disabled, and as a result Specters are a far better force multiplier than Ghosts could ever hope to be. Besides, they can both cloak and drop nukes, so either is ultimately just as valuable as infiltration/specialist units.

Last but not least:

Ghosts are far superior to spectres and are arguably top three units in the game, especially once you get to the final few missions. That said this isn’t Brutal so they’re not needed and even on Brutal you can go without them no problem.

JohnKilltrane
Dec 30, 2020

Yeah I'm joining Kith in the "Spectres > Ghosts" side. AoE stun is really good, and while their big damage ability is a little impractical, it still kicks rear end and is fun (especially used to blast Kerrigan in one volley on the last mission. A real crap shoot, but really fun when it works).

I also think that while Snipe is better than the Spectre abilities when micro'd properly, the Spectre's stun is a lot easier and more practical to use when you just have one or two of them grouped in with a deathball.

EDIT: To clarify, yes, Ghosts are objectively more powerful. But Spectres are more fun.

Also Bisbyworl, I hate to nitpick but you actually missed part of the intermission here - you cut out one of the lines. At one point Raynor says something like "By accepting this mission prior to the Great Train Robbery, any individual Let's Playing this game, hereafter referred to as "Party A," is hereby obligated to terminate at least one (1) train with nuclear weapons when the Great Train Robbery is finally undertaken." It's a weird line and I never really understood why it was in the game until this LP. Crazy.

As individual units, yes, Ghosts are better.

As part of an army, Spectres are better by a very wide margin. Stuns have offensive and defensive utility and can shut down very dangerous units that Snipe is not capable of killing. While they don't get the increased vision range that Ghosts do, you're practically guaranteed to have Scanner Sweep available at all times, so that doesn't actually matter.

Maybe we, the players, should have met Nova beforehand (in this game, mind, and not in some cancelled game), preferably doing us a solid, so there would be a reason to listen to her. Just spitballing here.
Aside from that - picking Tosh will lead him to stay, right? And thus, more conversations, while Nova doesn't stay to chat.
