It's when they're not paid for the work, or they start using it for new roles, that it becomes problematic.

Japanese companies tend to keep long running voice actors on a character for either their entire life or when the actor decides to step down, and in both cases, the voice actor typically has an approved replacement take the role.

Am I the only one who's not crazily attached to Charles Martinet? Good on him for being Mario for almost 30 years and getting a fat paycheck, but it's not Peter Cullen or Keith David quality work. If they have someone imitate Martinet's style going forward then I probably would never have known without the announcement.

As somebody whose first game ever was Super Mario 64, I think the retirement hit me a little harder than most. It feels weird to live in a world where it won't be Martinet's voice coming out of Mr. Video Games in the video games. I really do wonder who's gonna step up to replace him, because I feel like a lot of VAs keep a Mario imitation in their back pocket.
