Also I’m not usually a stickler for original titles vs international/English language ones but the original Italian title Dellamorte Dellamore is so much better

I have to wonder how much WB going all in with great 4K/BD combo and Steelbook releases plus reissuing movies in theaters helped. Watching Enter the Dragon in a movie theater kicked so much rear end that I nearly bought the 4K despite already owning the Criterion set, and I've already gotten Rebel Without A Cause and will be upgrading American Graffiti as soon as it drops.

Yeah they used to give a poo poo with menu design in the DVD era. I guess it was just out of sheer excitement that you could finally have some agency vs the VHS days. I kept my requiem for a dream DVD after I bought the UHD because that DVD has menus styled after the late night informercial in the film proper.

I’ll never forget the Abyss DVD menus where you literally navigate the undersea station. Same thing with the ‘Alien’ DVD, where you navigate the Nostromo, or the Terminator 2 DVD where you navigate the inner workings of Skynet’s central base circa 2029.

And don’t get me started on DVD menu Easter eggs. :allears:

It is kind of funny that the empty steelbook boutique thing that went up for a preorder for Wandavision and pissed everyone off now makes a lot more sense when there's a 2 disc release you can put in there.

e: also funny that while we don't know viewer numbers because no one discloses that, we get a round about confirmation on which shows are the most popular (and potentially profitable) ones. Fairly obvious though to anyone who has been watching all of them.

I'll always love cool DVDs because I had the first three Strong Bad Email DVDs and they're just a joy to navigate. Funny animations, Easter eggs if you wait around too long, tons of content, creative design, even the FBI warning is funny.

I mean I get what they were thinking. Why undercut the exclusivity of Disney+ for a home video market that is increasingly niche? Why would people maintain their Disney+ subscription if they can just go out and buy those one or two series that they really like?

But they tried that for several years and the numbers just aren't great in terms of Disney+ actually bringing money into the company. So why not at least try to make up some of that by selling some blu rays?

I can say this with a little bit of insider knowledge, but I know someone who works at Disney/Hulu and someone at Netflix. Everyone is seeing the light that streaming isnt the future its all cracked up to be and all those price raises we're slowly seeing trickle out are only the beginning. The cost of streaming is going to be pretty outrageous in the not so distant future and I think this may just help physical to get the kick in the pants it needs.

Now Apple better give me a Severance UHD too. That's what I really want (and for Mr. Robot/Hannibal to be re-released on UHD).

Legion season 2 and 3 on bluray please.

And, since I’m getting the last movie tomorrow, hopefully they put Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem on bluray too. It sticks to have the last episode and the final movie on disk, but not the movie in between.

I think Disney is realizing that Disney+ isn't going to be the cash cow they hoped it would be and that trying to make money from their content using other avenues is probably a good idea.

They have also fallen in the "gently caress sharing" and "let's raise the monthly fees to the moon" trap netflix did, the only reason I have a d+ account is because i share it with another team of comic nerds because otherwise there is no meat to justify 9€/month.

is there a site or way or whatever to read up on not films themselves, but different cuts of films? like, alien. it's got the old theatrical cut and the 2003 one. if i wanted to read up on the differences and read reviews of each cut, is there a central place to do that? or is it one of those things just to google and hope for helpful info?

I don't get why Severin would announce Cemetery Man without a preorder available. Like, I don't care if it arrives in 6 months, I'll totally forget about it because this announcement is probably the only time I'm going to think about buying it.

I think it was just a guy talking to someone at the Severin booth and not an official announcement. They said the restoration isn't complete yet, so it probably won't be released until next year.

Kino Lorber does this all the time - they'll announce they have a title coming, but it could be anywhere from three months to a year.

In their case, they're definitely using the early word as a method of figuring out demand. They initially didn't think the Dollars Trilogy would sell well enough for UHD and just did The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly as a tryout. Among their top sellers and now they're prepping Fistful of Dynamite, which wasn't even remotely likely a few years ago. They also added UHD for The Italian Job after initially announcing it as Blu-ray only.

yeah, it's an English language film but still an Italian production, the bad audio sync is just part of the package. It hardly even registers for me at this point.
