Was gonna record the next update (for my sanity, I'm gonna skip New Delsta for now since I don't want to extract info from 30-40 or so NPCs with just Coerce) but we've got a tie right now, so someone please break it.

That shakes things up, but it'll certainly make my life easier in the future so I'm not complaining. Osvald's start is also a bit unique, but more on that when I record it.

So originally, I planned to do some more city content and side stories, but the thought of gathering NPC info with just Temenos was a bit much, so I opted to put it off. Fortunately for me, Osvald won out, so now we need to head north.

Conveniently enough, our fastest path right now is to start from New Delsta.

The Brightlands

It's a short and rather uneventful trip, but there's still new foes to encounter and sights to see.

I forgot to unlock Partitio's second skill earlier, so I go for Hired Help since even the cheapest option is great, doing sword attacks and boosting our P.Def. And we can start getting a bit more money as well with Partitio's new passive.

The City Ratkins have some fat pockets as well.

Throné snags her second skill. Shackle Foe is the most useful of this lot early-game, as it'll help a lot with survival.

Eventually I start running from encounters so as not to get too overleveled. Of course, it takes several attempts to run per encounter.

This is a big 15-point upgrade to both defenses. Temenos will enjoy this, especially for the boost to healing.

A little talked-about thing is this black market.

From what I understand, the shops will rotate each night, so there'll be different goods for sale. It wouldn't surprise me if it also changed based on other factors, like how far into your main character's story you are, or levels, places discovered, or so on. Some hard-to-find stuff may pop up occasionally, including an otherwise rare and valuable concoction ingredient.

I don't need any of this stuff for now, though. We're a bit overleveled, and we don't want to make things too easy.

The Winterlands

Going north from the black market leads to the Winterlands, and our next companion.

New foes as well, though I just encountered these jerks.

Cape Cold is a small town on the northern coast.

Oh, yeah. There's something important we should check out, huh?

Much better.

Also I guess we should help out this guy taking a nap in the snowscape.

......

You saved me there.

You must be...a traveler.

I'm sure you have...your own reasons for traveling. So what do you say we help each other out for a bit?

You've chosen well...

Like every other character so far, Osvald also has his own story going on. However, the twist here is that we're gonna play Osvald's Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Yes, Octopath Traveler II isn't as rigid in its formula as the first game. Most characters have five chapters, with one lacking a boss, but even then some have certain chapters you could do in any order, and a couple are different (Partitio's only got four chapters, but his three side quests basically count as a fifth chapter, while Throné gets an extra chapter for no particular reason).

Video: The Trial

Nothing begets nothing.

Apprehension

......

They were nearly charred beyond recognition; a gruesome sight, I'm sure you agree. Thus the court accepts, without objection, immolation as the cause of death.

Nothing one could reasonably consider the cause of the conflagration was found at the scene. Ergo, the fire ought not to have happened at all.

......

Is that a mere coincidence? I think not. Having conducted a thorough investigation of the scene, the court holds the following to be true:

Osvald V. Vanstein...

Do you have any last words?

SILENCE

(The man who took everything from me...)

-----

Or rather, I should say...

The deplorable treatment of the prisoners

ensures that lives end before sentences do.

It's your little notebook. It never leaves your hands, does it?
......
Aw, don't look at me like that. I'm only borrowin' it!

I'm sure it'd fetch me a tidy pile of cigarettes!

This is Osvald, a former scholar and one of the land's most brilliant minds.

So naturally, his night path action is to beat people up to steal their belongings.

Or to regain his own belongings, in this case.

Osvald cannot cast spells in his current state.

That said, he still knows how to break some knees with a stick.

T-take it back! I've got no use for your filthy scribblings, anyhow!

......

Simple as that.

Help! Somebody!
......

Scheming

It's him! He attacked me!

How d'you like the new toy I gave you, Professor?

Keeps you from speakin' those spells you love so much. You're the only one who has the honor of wearin' it, I'll have you know. You should be kissin' my feet!
......

I know defiance when I see it, and I'll have none of it!

When you're beggin' for your life, that is! Hehehe...

SILENCE

......

(Thirteen seconds from the time a prisoner calls for help to the guards' response. At least some valuable information's come of all this.)

(Over time I've learned much about the way the prison--and the people within it--work.)

-----

Without Hope, Without Warmth (Night)

(I've revised said plan numerous times these last five years, and polished it to a fine sheen. Only three pieces of the puzzle remain.)

(For this, I have chosen a passage that leads beneath the prison. The passage is overlooked even by the guards themselves, and it leads directly out of this place. I must conduct a more thorough review of it, and soon.)

(Once I escape, I'll be exposed to the elements. The cold will claim me in minutes if I am clad in nothing but these rags.)

(To escape on my own would be to rely on my own assumptions. I require the help of another with intimate knowledge of the prison's inner workings.)

(At which point only its execution shall remain.)

......

-----

SILENCE

(Entire mountains were reduced to rubble for ore, and the prison was built atop the wreckage.)

(It's immensely flammable, and sells for a fair bit of coin. So the prisoners are forced to mine it, and the guards line their pockets with the proceeds.)

I said keep moving, unless you'd rather freeze to death!

Don't you go soft on me, criminal filth...

So beg whatever god you serve for forgiveness and dig, you useless little mole!

And believe you me, we'd burn you instead if you were anywhere near as easy to set alight!

...I think the warden's getting a wee bit too into his role there.

(We are adaptable creatures. Any environment, no matter how horrific, can be made ordinary.)

-----

Without Hope, Without Warmth

(It is in this free time that I review the remaining pieces of my plan.)

(The prison is as old as it is massive. There are bound to be gaps and awkward seams. Perhaps I can glean a hint or two from someone with intimate knowledge of the island's history.)

(One they call "The Provisioner" sells the clothing I'll need to survive. But first I need to find them. I'll start by asking any prisoners who might know this "Provisioner".)

(My accomplice cannot be an ordinary prisoner. I must find someone capable of enacting my escape plan.)

We have our mission. Accomplish these three tasks, then get the hell out of here.

We'll actually start with the second task for now.

You look like you need something. Same as everyone else who comes to see me.
......

I can secure most anything people ask for. Not for money, given our circumstances. But everyone has something of value on them, if you know what I mean.
......

(I'd better scrutinize some of the other prisoners.)

Now we get to Osvald's day path action, Scrutinize. Like Temenos's Coerce, this gets information from a NPC, but getting that information is based on a percentage chance rather than beating it out of them. Like other percentage-based commands, the chances increase with level.

Naturally, we'll be having a lot of fun with this. Well, as much fun as we can have analyzing prisoners anyway.

(Let's see how he responds...)

We've got what we were after. Lets go uncover more dark secrets first.

Some are just boring ol' thieves and murderers. Weirdly everyone else has set sentences of a bunch of years, only Osvald is special enough to have a life sentence.

But who the hell could make this place a home?

Don't worry, this place also has drug dealers!

It's nice that he got at least some rehabilitation here, though it's a bit alarming his sentence is the highest we've seen so far...

Naturally, most of the guards here are rather big pricks.

Turns out he was correct.

.....
Eh? What's that scrap of paper in your hand?

Wh-whatever you want, it's yours! Just swear you won't speak a word of this to anyone!

I, uh, don't think that'll be a problem in Osvald's case.

(This clothing ought to keep me from freezing to death.)

-----

Osvald...

Without Hope, Without Warmth

(Someone who knows the history of this place should be able to point me in the right direction. Perhaps it's time I put some prisoners under a little scrutiny to find a suitable candidate. The only question is which to procure first...)

I opt to focus on the escape plans next, but really, the order doesn't matter here.

There's a decent library here, and as a bonus, the librarian isn't a jerk!

You know, one of the character stories in OT1 involved tracking down a stolen book. Can't really do that right now, though.

I mean, it's good to have a role, even if you're not that good at it.

The prison itself has the fellow we're looking for. Time to scout around.

Yeah, that'll do it.

Fun fact, this actually gets answered eventually! Not anytime soon, though.

It's kind of hard to pretend to be a super villain in a world where literal magic exists. Even harder when you're some nobody stuck in jail.

To be fair, who amongst us hasn't gotten drunk enough to duel people? At least he won.

Go figure being stuck on a frigid rock days away from anything approaching civilization would be miserable for everyone!

And of course, that tiny bit of power can really mess some people up.

To be fair, you did kidnap and ransom a child. You're getting off light comparitively.

It really seems you can get away with anything here if you're a guard.

Who knows with some of these people?

Probably not so wise in a world where the gods seem to have more of a presence.

Wanna go double-or-nothing on that sentence?

This is what happens when you pirate video games.

Or he could've been the other kind of pirate too, I guess...

We're almost done exploring here.

We'll see how well this works for him. I'd imagine it'd make him a bigger target, if only because people would be more inclined to shut him up.

I know more about this place than the guards do.

Looks like we've found our source.

But don't go askin' me details. Best I can say is there ought to be a labor report for it on file in the library.

Let's go there now!

(Whoever wrote it spared no detail in recording the construction of the passage. And they were a prisoner as well. Must be why no one gave it so much as a second glance.)

(Aha. There's an entry to the passage right by the guards' station. All in proceeding as planned.)

(Seems I'm out of time. Back to the hole, then.)

-----

Yet if I apply the equation I have here, its intensity is compounded...

However, as long as it remains a flame, its power is limited.

You're a genius, Osvald!

You're one step close to it. To standing alone atop the summit of magic scholarship!

Next time, Osvald finds his accomplice and executes his escape plan.

Good old ridiculously brutal and cruel prison life.

Got to admit, the presence of magic must make a prosecutor's job a lot more complicated. Though being able to point fingers at a mage and just rely on "we didn't find a cause, so it's gotta be magic" is rife for abuse.

Not to mention that, unless magic is regulated, it basically makes anyone and everyone potential suspects when there's no reliable evidence aside from eyewitnesses. Who's to say a random arsonist didn't just come into town and set that building on fire before taking off?

I don't find it hard to believe that you can make a muzzle that cannot be removed without proper tools. Since he's in a prison, he has limited access to tools. I'm more questioning Throne's collar which somehow cannot be removed by any other means than the keys. She could potentially access locksmiths or blacksmiths.

I guess it's more of a"Yes, hello, I belong to this criminal organization" identifier, and less of a death switch. The death switch only going off if you try taking it off.

So in a way, the collars are a way of saying that the only way out of the organization is if you die. It sure isn't going to stop Throné from trying, though.

Submerge yourself neck-deep into flowing water, cut the collar so that the stream carries the poison away from you. You could probably think of other solutions as well. Anything that's not magic can be bypassed or is so complicated that the trap would go off randomly and kill 90% of the wearers within a year. Oswald's muzzle is not a problem though since he's restricted to a more controlled environment and don't have the options Throne has.

I'm a bit thorn with Throne's story. I think it's a good story, but my suspension of disbelief is heavily taxed. Not just by this, but also by the impossible stereotypical thieves guild and something that will come up later. I still favor it over Therion's though.

Without Hope, Without Warmth

(Time to scrutinize my fellow prisoners and see who will prove worthy.)

Last time, Osvald obtained information about the escape route he planned to use, as well as the clothing necessary to survive the elements. All that's left is to find someone to assist him in his escape.

All that's left to explore is the mess hall, so we'll head there.

(Now is my chance to find an accomplice.)

...Probably not.

Gotta agree with Osvald on this one.

No one like a narc.

Now this guy, he has a name and a unique sprite and everything. He might do.

Miscreant's Melody

What are you playing at, skulking around and sizing up all the prisoners?
......
Ah right, you can't speak on account of the muzzle.

And all that time you've been feigning indifference while you surveil the place, right?
......
The other prisoners, the guards... Everyone and everything.

Far as I'm concerned, only two types of prisoners watch silently for five years. Hungry beasts...

......
If it's the former, I know someone who can help. But if it's the latter...

Shake your head if you're the former, or nod if you're the latter.

This man is observant, and arguably our best chance at escape. No reason to lie to him.

So my eyes didn't deceive me after all. You're quite clever, I'll say that.

......
I can be of use to you. You'll see. I've got lots of valuable information I'll only share with a close confidant. I've collected it over my long years in this place. That's why they call me "Emerald the Informant."

......

(Further, he is correct that I have need of his "wares." I can certainly use him to my advantage.)

So, what would you have me do?
......

(Even if our escape proves successful, we'll need a ship capable of making the journey to the mainland.)

(Thus I need to know when it is due to arrive next. The ledger containing that information is fiercely guarded. I stand no chance of laying eyes on it.)

Understood. That won't come easily. Not impossible, though. I'll contact you once I have it.

"Get me the key to this muzzle."

Heh... Let's just pray luck is on our side, eh, confidant?
......

Nothing left to do but turn in for the day.

SILENCE

I've explored every possible avenue, but it's nowhere to be found.

You've done enough, Osvald. Well done, truly. Now allow me, the great Harvey...

(Harvey...!)

-----

Scheming

It took a while, but the goods came in.
......

You misunderstand, Warden! This isn't what it--!

Right as Davids lays into Emerald and Osvald, the shift bell rings.

Speak another word and I will bury you in the very pit in which you toil! Do I make myself clear!?

At least that's the last I'll ever feel of that club... Right?

Looks like things are in motion, so...

Time to see what's going on.

Miscreant's Melody

It sure wasn't easy, but I nicked it. The inspection ledger.

......
All we need to do is follow your plan to the letter.

-----

SILENCE

Aye, the gods are in a foul mood yet again. Sure to be another horrible day in hell.

(Prison patrols will be shorthanded while they ready a welcome party for the ship. That leaves a small window in which to begin executing our plan.)

(First, we need to make our way to the underground passage.)

Without Hope, Without Warmth (Night)

Emerald's now part of the party.

He has a basic healing skill, a P.Atk debuff, and a dagger attack that hits a random number of times to random targets. For a basic companion, he's one of the better ones.

It's night, so we can Mug people here now, but Osvald still can't cast magic and everyone is decently strong, plus the loot is underwhelming, so it's not worth the hassle.

At any rate, time to say our goodbyes, so to speak.

...or die trying.

Alright, time to escape.

But first, I have a little something for you.

Hehe... I'm locked up now, sure, but I was quite the thief outside these walls.
......

Now I finally get to hear your voice.

......

......

Now I see why they needed to muzzle you. You're quite the talker.
There's no time. Keep moving.

You're real warm and fuzzy, aren't you... Save the thanks for when we make our escape.

Gotta say, it'll be nice not having to transcribe entire passages of ellipses anymore, at least for this chapter.

Stillness Underground

Alright, time to escape.

Osvald's talent is to reveal enemy weaknesses at battle. He'll reveal one per type of enemy, but in future encounters with those enemies, he'll reveal two more at the start of battle instead. Very convenient!

Now that Osvald is unmuzzled, he can cast spells and thus play to his strengths as a Scholar, i.e. throwing out powerful elemental attacks.

That said, the foes aren't necessarily ones to be taken lightly.

The P.Atk increase is marginal, but it is a good boost to Osvald's E.Atk, which naturally is what fuels his spells.

This gives a slight boost to both Max HP and SP.

Just exploring the passage is enough to unlock Osvald's first skill, which means it's time to go over his skillset!

Fireball/Icewind/Lightning Bolt - Deal fire/ice/lightning damage to all enemies. They do the same damage, it's just a matter of which element you want to hit with. A scholar's bread and butter, they're pretty effective in what they do and are great for groups of enemies.

Analyze - Reveal a foe's HP and weaknesses (BP spent increases weaknesses revealed). Not really necessary, especially with Osvald's talent, but can come in handy early in a boss battle.

Stroke of Genius - Grant 2+BP spent random buffs to self. Kind of a weird one, mainly useful if you don't have much else to do, but nothing really worth planning around when better buff options exist.

Elemental Barrage - Hit random foes 3-5+BP times (i.e. at max BP it hits 6-8 times), with each hit randomly being one of fire, ice, or lightning. While the other elemental spells are great for groups, this really excels against single enemies, as it can do a ton of damage and even shred shields in the right circumstances if you're lucky. One of the scholar's better moves for sure.

Advancd Magic - Boost the intensity of an ally's spells 2+BP times. "Intensity" means that certain spells will be buffed to hit twice instead of once. This only applies to the scholar's Fireball/Icewind/Lightning Bolt, the cleric's Heal Wounds/Luminescence/Revive, a couple spells to one of the secret jobs, and a couple of EX Skills. This is a pretty nice skill to have, even if it's really only useful for scholars and clerics. Its main issue is that it's outclassed by...

Divine Skill: Alephan's Wisdom - Greatly boosts the intensity of an ally's spells three times. This means most spells hit three times (much like the Sorcerer's spells in OT1, and in fact the new names of these spells are the same as those, for example "Fireball" becomes "Fire Storm" with Advanced Magic and "Ignis Ardere" with Alephan's Wisdom), with the healing spells recovering more HP. Of course, the tricky part is a scholar will likely want to cast it on themselves, burning a turn (edit: it affects the next three spells, like I said earlier, ignore my idiocy), but there's ways to plan around that, plus fortunately our main character Temenos will love this buff no matter what. Takes a bit of planning to make work, but get it off and you'll do some serious damage to the enemies.

Support Skills:

Evasive Maneuvers - Reduces the random encounter rate (not affected by multiple instances being equipped). Like in OT1, this is a huge QoL feature and will make my life a lot easier when exploring and moving through dungeons and such, especially as once again the accessory to disable random encounters isn't available until you're essentially finished with the game.

Elemental Augmentation - Raises character's E.Atk by 50. More damage is always good, and it'll work well as a good passive until more powerful ones pop up that'll better increase damage.

Extra Experience - Boosts EXP gained from combat by 10% (not affected by multiple instances being equipped). Minor but handy, though usually I'll try to limit what EXP gains I can so I don't trivialize things so bad. Good for end-game level grinds if necessary, though.

Advanced Magic Master - If equipped character gets a buff that boosts spell intensity, that buff is extended by one turn. Since buffs are rather hard to extend to begin with, this isn't too bad a skill to have. Probably not essential, but can be a solid option for a filler passive for Osvald or Temenos.

For now, I go Lightning Bolt for a bit of added diversity, though also because I fear Elemental Barrage would make things too easy for this stretch.

While OT2 changed the Chapter 1's in general to make more sense, you still get these random merchants before the first boss for no reason other than so you're not screwed. Hey, the convenience is worth the bit of narrative dissonance.

We escape the bulk of the tunnel and seem to be home free, except...

SILENCE

drat! We were so close...

I fear I've underestimated our opponent.

I commend you for making it this far. You even managed to remove the muzzle!

I suspected you two would work together.

Save your breath. The fault is mine.

Ohoho!

So many have tried, and every last one died a tragic death.

Video: Boss - Warden Davids

Critical Clash II

Even someone as brilliant as Osvald can't forsee every possibility. No matter, this can still be solved through bloodshed.

Crowd control is important, and if you opted to grab Lightning Bolt, you'll be rewarded. Fireball only hits Davids, and Icewind only hits the guards, but Lightning Bolt hits both. Took me a bit to discover this, though, so I focus on Icewind since I want to take out the guards first.

Especially since these jerks can hit relatively hard.

Emerald is no slouch in this fight, since if you're lucky his dagger attack can break the lesser guards.

If a foe is broken, the element you hit them with does not matter, so it makes sense to go with Fireball to shred a shield off Davids.

Davids is mostly a physical attacker, and despite being out of breath at times while beating prisoners, he can actually hold his own in a proper fight. Never judge someone's capabilities solely on appearances.

Since the actual spells being used aren't too important, I opt for some variety. What's the point of all these fancy spell effects if you can't enjoy the spectacle?

That said, the elemental spells are somewhat expensive, and we don't have good ways to manage SP yet besides scarfing down plums. The occasional turn spent throwing a plum to Osvald is easily worth the damage he's dealing to his foes, though.

Davids can also deal some nasty debuffs, like this speed-reducing one.

Eventually I take down the adds and can focus solely on Davids.

Emerald's First Aid skill is also no slouch, being very cheap at only 2SP and healing around half our HP.

Davids has a nasty attack that stuns a character unconscious for a couple turns. Luckily we have one herb that can heal this, but it's bad if it hits again.

I'd rather not spend the BP to break him, so better to mitigate it with a handy debuff.

Which, good thing I did, as he hits quite a few times with this move!

Finally, Davids isn't all brawn, as he has a decently strong ice move as well.

Finally, an opening.

Time to unload what we can on him.

Of course, this is far from over...

I see now that no punishment is too great for you!

I underestimated him. He's a better fighter than I expected.

Perhaps Davids could stand to learn a bit of math himself...

...as now he's unlocked Osvald's latent, which focuses multi-target spells onto a single-target and thus does more damage, though I'm not entirely sure how much more. Definitely one of the more situational latents, but no reason not to use it against solitary foes.

So once I wipe out the second wave of soldiers...

...I unleash a rather powerful spell. Despite only using 2BP, this does almost twice as much damage as the max-boosted one I used earlier, so it's a solid damage boost!

Hilariously, that wasn't quite enough, and he knocked Emerald unconscious again, so I opted to chip away at his shields with staff strikes, and...that was enough to finish him off. Not all final blows can be so climatic, I guess!

Video: The Answer to Escaping

Don't think...you can escape...this place...

Looks like there's more rats where these came from!

Urgency

We managed to take down Davids, but we're still cornered. If only there was a way to escape...

We have to keep moving.
Where, exactly!? This is the end of the road!

Flames, reduce this wall to ash!

We have to go. Now.

Osvald and Emerald escape the guards, but they still have a tough path ahead of them as they now have to figure out how to escape this island with everyone aware of their escape. How is Professor Jailbreak going to get out of this mess?

Find out next time when we start Osvald's Chapter 2!

I stabbed you dude!
I love Elemental Barrage. With a bit of luck Osvald can blast his way to some great stuff way earlier than you're supposed to.

As an aside, it's kinda interesting how the differences in Cyrus and Osvald's personalities is reflected in their playstyles. Cyrus has the most severe case of tunnel vision the world has ever known and tends to just jump right into things so it makes sense that he goes from nuking to nuking things twice. Osvald has focus, but it's more methodical. He's more of a planner. It makes sense that he goes with the bigger setup, bigger payoff style.

Of course, that could just be my inner literature nerd desperate for some stimulation after being confined to my bedroom for 3 days due to COVID.

The transition from Osvald's theme to the boss music feels a little jarring.

Thankee kindly.
Osvald's Chapter 1 boss was one of the harder ones I think, because Osvald isn't very sturdy and unlike Temenos, he doesn't have a Crick to help him eat blows. Stocking up at the merchant is definitely a good idea for recovery items.

I swear, by my sword and capote, that I will once again prove victorious!!
Emerald always referring to Osvald as "confidant" throws me off a bit. It feels like one of those nicknames games give you if they let you rename characters but have voiced dialogue.

Also, as a note: Alephan's Wisdom doesn't last for three turns. It affects the next 3-4 spells you cast (that are boosted by it, natch), even if you cast them four turns later, so you'll always get the full bang for your buck whenever you cast it (unless the battle ends before you can, of course :v:).

The confidant nickname is cute! Gonna be a shame when Emerald leaves the party.

I honestly expected him to get a terminal wound in this fight, I'm curious to see how he will leave the party. Surely he will die at some point? Or will he actually escape alongside Osvald, and then we can meet him as a minor NPC in the world?

If the first two chapters are a package deal, maybe he bites it or takes off at the end of the next one.

This seems like a good bet, yeah.

Or, going by OT1, he just leaves and becomes a secret antagonist.

So we've been introduced to Harvey and Osvald, when is Lee going to show up?

Osvald has yet to introduce himself, what else was he gonna call him?

I mean I guess he probably knows his name; for sure after the warden says it, but it's still good manners to wait for an introduction before you start addressing someone so informally.
