That third panel of the first comic just makes it. It's still funny if you remove it, but that panel included just makes it top tier.

I wonder if the cat in the middle is recovering from surgery or something, explaining the onesie.

I don't think I'd mind spending a convalescence surrounded by purring cats.

Once when I was a kid I fell asleep while visiting some family that had about eight cats, and that was essentially how I woke up, surrounded and piled-on by snoozy cats who were happy that there was a human who wasn't moving around that they could enjoy delicious body heat from.

That is so cool!! It must feel so good seeing those li’l guys get out to the water 🥹. What sort of turtles are they? Do you track them or anything like that? May I ask why nests are excavated once they’re done hatching, if it’s not too complicated to get in to?

(Having troubles posting images… Does anyone know if the Awful iOS app no longer support posting images directly from your phone library?)

Hey, I missed this earlier! They’re mostly loggerheads here, with a smattering of greens, the occasional kemp’s, and our first leatherback nest in like a decade this year.

We dig into the nests after they hatch to determine how successful they were. Number laid, number hatched, and what stage of development the eggs stopped at (if applicable). With ~120 eggs per nest, it’s normal to have a few that didn’t develop for whatever reason…and any deviation from that is something we try to dig into. Could be anything from “mom laid the eggs and they weren’t fertilized” to “we should’ve moved the nest, the water/waves got to it and doomed the entire thing/this area is prone to erosion and the eggs would either get buried under 4ft of sand or exposed/available to predators”. Moving the nest is a thing we can do, but that’s a decision that needs made and done immediately; doing it past a certain time dooms the eggs outright, but doing it within ~12hrs of the nest being laid typically has good results. Most of our relocated nests so far have done well this year :)

I’m reading Jurassic Park, which turns out to be quite different from the movie, and there’s a scene early on where one of the kids gets playtime with a baby velociraptor, which is described as toothless, affectionate toward human caretakers, and craving physical contact and snuggles like a weird leathery kitten. I want to pet this extinct fictional animal so bad.

In lieu of that, anyone got some good cuddly reptiles? Bonus points if they give off vibes of wanting to be around people for reasons other than “this soft thing exudes warmth.”
