Mint Mobile has been great for me. The coverage is rear end and I only have 5gb (I think they upgraded their data for free). But overall it works well for the price. Better than when I was paying $70 a month for AT&T.

who are all these people paying for cellular ipads and apple watches, that seems like a big rip off when you're always on wifi or paired to your phone data maybe there are some justifiable use cases but certainly not the majority

My co-worker used to have XM radio, and canceled it. Then his wife wanted it again in her car, so she called back. She just paid for whatever the top tier was and went about her day. She paid nearly $40/month for loving XM radio for years before her husband caught it.

Seconding mint as being good and cheap. They don't do apple watches though, so I got some crazy off brand UK plan for that coverage. Which also seems to work, but meh. Hopefully tmobile adds watch capability for mint, w/o jacking up the rates too much. (and yah, hopefully everyone is checking their credit card bill and side-eyeing any charges they don't immediately recognize. Don't pay for poo poo you aren't using!) I was initially interested in finally having an Apple Watch with cellular capabilities when I got my Ultra. The main appeal was no longer having to janitor which podcast episodes were actually downloaded to it when I went out for jogs without my phone. (This is an immense pain in the rear end to get right, and it can suck to be miles from home and realize that it didn't download the latest thing I was looking forward to listening to.) Alas, my mobile bill is paid by my company and they don't support Apple Watches, so I still have to use it in wifi-only mode.

It was only $10 extra a month. I ended up getting rid of it though because the reception was terrible and I was unable to stream without having my phone paired.

Thirding/fourthing Mint Mobile. My wife switched to them after Republic Wireless went to poo poo, and she's very happy with the service and pricing. (I went the other direction and instead just got rid of my personal phone entirely, but I know most people can't do that.)

I also use an MVNO, but US Mobile instead of Mint. They just released a pooled line offering. Wife and I share a 6 GB pool, unlimited voice and text, 2 lines. $26 per month, total, including taxes. You can add data packs if needed but most of our use is on WiFi.

There's also a significant amount of the US with only DSL as the only hard-line internet option (many with out even that) but they do have cell coverage so people have to use that as their home Internet. Lots of the Midwest and parts of Appalachia are like that.

Yeah, most people don’t really need cell connection for iPads, but certain businesses absolutely do, and if you travel a lot it’s great. My mom just has her phone and iPad, so we stopped paying for her home internet and just have her use a cell connection for both.

I think that all of the "why pay for an iPad data connection?" questions were because you can just run a wifi hotspot on your phone for free instead, and you always have a phone on you anyway.

I have the antennapod app on my (android) phone set to download new episodes in the background whenever I'm on wifi and it Just Works without any janitoring or paid subs you just need a less bad app than whatever you're using

I’m on a Fi group with my brother, unlimited everything including tethering and it’s only $27/month. I had a hell of a time convincing AT&T to release my number but since then it’s been great. He does all sorts of hiking in the middle of nowhere and says he’s never not had service when he expected to.
