You can clearly see what's going on in those new Trek gifs - what key details are being blocked? I can understand finding them distracting, but like with Rebel Moon's griffon jump, they don't really obscure anything, you can see what's happening fairly easily

Lens flares aren't the problem in Abrams' stuff.

Like I said, it could be personal just because of my eyes being bad and just a desire to see the characters and the scene. The one thing I did like about JJ Trek is the set design and special effects. I want to be able to see the bridge, see the ship and surrounding space, and focus on the characters talking. The lens flare masks it, and unlike in Rebel Moon it lingers around faces or over action. The brightness also makes it hard to make out details of a beautiful set. It's like the polar opposite problem of early Disco and Picard Trek, where everything is so dark.

It's the first lesson in Star Trek 101 post-TMP: Starship porn is very important. You want to see those ships in all their beauty, and let your gaze linger on those elegant nacelles and shapely saucer sections:

IIRC the aesthetic idea behind the Star Trek lens flares is to try and make the Enterprise a literal ship of light in the darkness. It works for me tbh.

Came into this thread to talk about cool new trailer, but I guess we’re busy poo poo talking other directors.

I liked the eyeball hood guys who look like attendants with similar eyeball hoods in the Nausicaa manga as well as the Yiga Clan assassins in Zelda. I suppose there’s probably some cultural touchpoint in Japan that all of those eyeball hood designs are referencing?

Dipped my toe into Film Discourse and I think I'll just ignore it for this film. It's as toxic as usual. The following comments from this relatively nice Polygon article are the general tone I saw on Twitter as well. Don't want to bring negativity to the thread and all of us who crave validation for our simple views, but the more things change the more they stay the same.

https://www.polygon.com/23840513/rebel-moon-zack-snyder-star-wars-sci-fi-preview

quote:

This is going to be aggressively mediocre at best like everything else Snyder has done. Why studios keep giving him money to burn I'll never know.

quote:

I think it's because he produces morally straightforward, uncomplicated, visually interesting works that people who crave validation for their uncomplicated views flock to.

-

quote:

"I was always inspired by movies like Brazil. There’s a great history of director’s cuts."
This is exactly what's wrong with Zach Snyder, and it's why he has so many fans. He sees cinema entirely though the lens of a viewer, not a creator.

Everything he does is so backwards motivated, reverse-engineered based on how he wants it to be discussed by Comic-Con attendees, rather than developed naturally from artistic intent.

The release of a director's cut is something that generally happens to correct an error or a serious compromise forced on the film, or to provide an alternate view on older material after some time has passed, but of course Zach Snyder would want to skip all that and just jump to the end where he makes both at the same time. Famous and infamous films all have director's cuts, so he'll make one, too.

This quote is genuinely fascinating. The last two decades of reactions to his work shows that 'pleasing nerds' is not in his list of priorities at all. It's basically what defines the absolutely terrible discourse around him and his films.

Snyder's haters have moved on from misremembering his films to misremembering the real world's reaction to those films.

In more relevant discussion, there's a Men's Health video showing ZS's workout routine. He shows his home gym (a shipping container, his wife has a nice gym inside the home, though) and ZS and the trainer go through his workout for the day.

They do chest, tris AND bis. This clearly shows that ZS is a man of the culture, and the people. Big day on pushing for the pectorals and tris, hitting delts hard too. And then, to cap it off, off goes the pump cover and it's curl time. This is not the workout of a bourgeois liberal. This is a nasty workout for the real working class meathead. Chest and Arms, same day. Charms day. This is not "wellness" or "health", this is a workout worthy of jack3d and weird lingering wrist pains.

Aside - might as well try everything, I thought, so I had a look at Kingsglaive, the FF15 movie, back when it came out.

I lasted 20 minutes, it looked gorgeous but was so incoherent I felt like I was disassociating, it was literally making me sick and dizzy, sweating, eyes twitching, flinching at nothing. Couldn't remember anything except maybe it started with a map, maybe there was a shot of a climbing anchor hitting a wall? Never had anything like that before or since. Imagine that feeling you get when you wake up and you're trying to remember a dream, except physical. Guess it wasn't for me.

The films themselves look like the algorithmic lovechild of Star Wars (see the lightsabers), Dune (see the nose tubes and the desert worlds), Foundation (see the big space battles) and Game Of Thrones (see the dragons and griffins), with some definitely not very subtle space Nazis thrown in for good measure. What a dumb article, like the movie is THE MAIN THING so yeah no poo poo if you buy some spinoff game or whatever you'll be more into it if you saw the movie.

But it's also stupid because like, you think you need Star Wars to understand the video game Super Star Wars or whatever? lol come on that's just really desperate fishing for hate (or like?) clicks.

FFXV's story and world was brazenly mega rushed and unfinished* with extremely clear areas in the game where you can tell a chunk was cut for time, and the prequel movie they did and character story DLCs they did release (they only put out like half of them) don't particularly add much understanding to what's going on in the game's time. It's such a bizarre comparison and definitely feels like a conclusion the writer came up with that they then had to do a lot of stretching to make it fit.

But even the stretched things in there, like, yeah I get Game of Thrones was very popular but like, Game of Thrones didn't invent flying mythological animals and nothing about what we do see in the trailer of that resembles anything about how those aspects look and feel in Game of Thrones.

*Yeah it was "in production" for 10 years or whatever but the actual iteration that was made and released wasn't in production for nearly that long.

This thread is at it's best when it's just random thoughts on a movie, or something in a scene that jumped out, or good criticism. It is at it's worst when it's just an extension of poisonous social media, where somebody finds some opinion they don't like and drags it back here to their private lounge to be curbstomped by the sickos. I beg of you, use the Discord for that if you must.

Yeah, I agree that talking about youtube and other comments on the forum is kinda a crapshoot. It's easier to vent on discord. But I will say that it's annoying that this stuff keeps happening with his films. It's such an annoying derail in the conversation. So instead of talking about how a cool new operatic sci-fi show is coming out that's like Chronicles of Riddick, or John Carter of Mars, or Jupiter Ascending it's how this film is promoting fascism or racism or somesuch nonsense.

It's like, why is this even a talking point?
