Warframe's problem is hardly the lack of depth. It's the fact that you can focus on any single facet of the combat system and upgrade it enough that you like and use nothing but it alone.
The Duviri/Wanderer combat ya dingus. Soulframe footage came out in March, Duviri came out in April.

I just finished En Garde! and wanted to shout it out. It's a swashbuckling game with some light platforming but most of the focus is on the combat, which is really solid. Lots of parrying and dodging while using the environment to set off traps and throw enemies off balance. It's got a fun style and great soundtrack too.

The biggest caveat is its length. I finished it in a little under 4 hours, but the game stayed consistently fun for the entire length of it and I'll likely replay it on a higher difficulty level. There's an arena mode too with lots of modifiers that I'll spend some more time playing with too.

It's only $20, give it a shot!

Maybe people are already aware of him but I'd like to do a shoutout for Iron Pineapple's YT channel. He is a Soulsborne youtuber who three or so years ago started making videos on less well-known Souls-like (or adjacent) titles on Steam and they exploded in popularity because they're really good: he introduces the title, plays them for a bit and then gives his thoughts on them. He showcases pretty much everything - student projects, demos, legit good games, terrible shovelware, etc. As long as it fits some sort of Souls-like criteria it's all good (there's also a few boomer shooters in there too! Blame marketing). The videos are timestamped so you can see where each game review begins and ends, here's his review for En Garde for instance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N0FdGM8c_I&t=25s

Just as with Mandalore, their videos are an instant watch for me so maybe someone here finds something they like!

I can absolutely second that. It's a smaller game, but the sort that knows exactly what it wants to do and does it really well. Combat is quick, fun, and varied, while also actually being decently challenging at times. It also really nails the lighthearted storybook tone and look, which is a refreshing change of pace. It's also pretty gay, which is always a plus.

Though I wouldn't really describe it as a souls-like by any measure :v:

The new Saints Row can be summed up by a gameplay sequence where you plan a big heist on a casino or bank or something, you pull up to the location, and your crew goes "You're the wheelman, wait here.", and you sit quietly in the car while the NPC's go in and do the heist without you.

Just as with Mandalore, their videos are an instant watch for me so maybe someone here finds something they like!

I've been watching him for a while and picked up a few titles to look forward to from his videos, and also enjoyed him liking a few titles I've also liked (Lunacid, Vigil: The longest night - please get it back on Steam soon!)

Also really enjoy the various indie devs commenting how nice it is to see their game featured and take note of his various suggestions to improve. I would like to think a lot of these games get a huge spike in attention when he covers them, and some are more like hidden gems, and then some are just outright so bad it's funny.

En Garde! looks really good but seems like a bit high price for such a short game. I'd really like to support an effort to do something different, though.

e: Mandalore has done a video about Northern Journey (which IP also covered in one of his videos) which I'm gonna have to go watch right now

what' is different about king's field that isn't replicated by the bloodeldensouls games ?
never played them and they just seem like very slow (movement-wise) versions of their later formula

Azran

And what should one do to be remembered?
It's one of those cases where the later games managed to improve on the core essence of the spiritual predecessors, but it also sanded off some of the most unique (and challenging) elements. At least to me, they've always been all about the first person perspective and how that plays into making the player feel vulnerable but very immersed. They're also much more unforgiving than later games. Demon's Souls is a very interesting transition point since you can still see a lot of that playful meanness of KF and sheer sense of being lost and without guidance, yet every Souls title after that point shows much more restraint in that regard. Nowadays I don't think I'd ever go back to KF titles given how clunky and slow they are, but it's nice that its weirdo niche sub-genre wasn't entirely left in the past.

That reminds me that I'm still waiting for Demon's Souls to hit Steam :argh:

King's Field 2 (international 1) and Shadow Tower at least started you a step away from a lethal fall as well, it was basically a running gag (alongside there being a treasure chest containing an angry skeleton somewhere)

It’s like the only place that does that though. It’s a weird way to start a game. KF4 is mean but not harder than souls games at all.

I played KF4 on steam deck around the holidays last year with completely remapped controls and it was awesome. There’s really not much out there like it. It shares a lot with the souls games that would come later, but it’s more claustrophobic and the only souls game with exploration to match is the first half of DS1 in terms of interconnectivity and a coherent geographic space. It does the souls style storytelling too, with obscure quests and descriptions but I think the world is a bit more well formed and easy to follow, maybe because it’s more generically just dark fantasy.

The combat is not as deep mechanically as Souls and because of that I don’t think it would stand up to replays as well as Souls does, but there’s an enjoyable rhythm to it once you get the pace of it. Souls is also a bit of a power fantasy where you start getting bodied by tutorial enemies, and KF has that as well. You start barely able to swing a club and by the end you’re killing god kings with your laser swords.

I don’t know where it ranks in my soulsborne ranking but I think it’s not the bottom game and I highly recommend it. With remapped controls.

really dug the Europa demo, controls could admittedly use some refinement but it seems like a very promising take on the Journey-inspired combat-free exploration platformer subgenre
