Anecdotally- shooting the gap between exposure and infectiousness was more of a thing with wildtype, current variants seem to make people infectious earlier but I have nothing to back that up.

Baby showers can always be rescheduled- my friend had a massive complication and had to cancel hers when one of her babies required fetal surgery. It was fuckin wild but those twins just had their second birthday. Play it safe.

Keep the heck away from expectant women if you might have it, I don't have the studies straight to hand, but I've heard enough stories from my mother's former coworkers that it can very bad for expectant people.

yeah the problem with the covid vaccines isn't really the vaccines themselves, they're fine and good, the problem is vaccination, like everything about covid, and everything about everything really these days, became a locus for culture war bullshit

the terrible messaging didn't help at all either

if they hadn't tried mRNA then the claimed objections would just have been different but just as strenuous, it's not worth entertaining seriously

and the opposing trenchline of the culture war insisting that the vax can and did magically Solve Covid so we can all Get Back To Normal is also dumb as dogshit, and it's perfectly reasonable IMHO to point this out without necessarily being antivax

I'm looking up information on blastomycosis on the Wisconsin Dept of Health Services website and am very amused with how they talk about it

Lol. Middlebury is my neck of the woods.

Interestingly enough, I've seen more masks in Middlebury this spring and summer than anywhere else in Vermont. At the food coop, nearly every cashier wears them. I feel like there had to be an outbreak besides Breadloaf that I didn't hear about.

I haven't been checking this thread for awhile but will be keeping an eye to monitor the updated vaccine variant.

For those with kids going into school for the first time, I feel for you. I pretty much threw my hands up in spring of 2022 when the state went masks off. I still wore mine through the rest of that year into the end of winter 2023 and have been mask off since then.

Of course, we haven't traveled on planes nor do we eat out much. My wife did get it last November after Thanksgiving, our kid in February 2022 and both only once. I have no answer as to why I haven't gotten it yet but am positive it's only a matter of time, regardless of when I get the updated vaccine and when I start masking indoors again this fall.

For five days that ended on this past Monday I was selected for jury duty. I briefly thought that if there's a way for me to get it, spending so much time in the jury room would be it but, knock on wood, apparently not.

welp, it was a good run, but with a kid in preschool it was only a matter of time. wife and I have killer headaches and bright angry test lines on our RATs (though the kid is still testing negative, even though she was coughing and sniffling all last week). timeline suggests the kid got COVID at preschool late last week and never developed a viral load big enough to be detected on a RAT, then passed it on to us maybe two days ago or so.

wife got a pax prescription through her normal teladoc, I'm about to try for mine.

im still going to take precautions but with a 5 year old in preschool it sometimes feels like any precaution I, personally, take is like putting a padlock on a paper bag. hate this poo poo

how about also people were always right to question the vaccine and efficacy of lockdowns as the pandemic never suspended the question of capital.

it’s still echoed in this very thread that if people had just lockdowned harder, the virus would have been defeated. that was just a delusion as lockdowns were always for the ‘non-essential’ workers.

the disdain for ‘anti-vaxxers’ was always dumb because the vaccine doesn’t stop spread and the risk calculation is nebulous especially for younger people as the vaccine is not without side-effects

(USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

This post is reactionary and incoherent, but I repeat myself.

The idea that lockdowns and vaccines are unnecessary are premised on the idea that the novel coronavirus is just another common cold virus. This could hardly be further from the truth. It kills more people worldwide on an ongoing basis than any other infectious disease. Life expectancy immediately dropped by years, and it’s not done falling.

It’s just not quite bad enough that capital cannot force us to take it on the chin, via the violence of deprivation and the state and with the help of social enforcers in the lower classes.

So-called “lockdowns” have worked against communicable diseases for as long as humans have been writing histories. No one seriously questions whether they work in principle.

If asked to consider what would happen if smallpox tomorrow escaped from Atlanta or Novosibirsk or the pages of some forgotten book, everyone knows that we wouldn’t simply let it scythe through one fifth of the population. They know that SARS couldn’t be allowed to claim one in ten of all people alive today. Defeatism is only invoked against one particular pathogen, and it’s because capital has essentially allied with it.

Some of the sequencing ratios for subvariants are most likely skew in the coming weeks as labs will focus on prioritizing samples based on whether or not it has an S-gene target failure during preliminary PCR testing. This always happens when the world starts paying more attention to a new wave. When "less interesting" samples from this timeperiod get sequenced and uploaded later on it will even out again.

Though of course everything's skewed because our overall global sequencing frequency is poo poo but hey, gotta work with what you've got :pseudo:

in hindsight it was pretty messed up that the smallpox vaccine used to be mandated. It's not like you were guaranteed to get smallpox. And the vaccine had a distinct chance of loving you up!

The smallpox vaccine in fact hosed up so many people that the U.S. spent less money eradicating smallpox worldwide than they spent in a single year dealing with smallpox vaccine side effects. Doctors wring their hands over myocarditis following mRNA coronavirus vaccination, but it was literally hundreds* of times as common following smallpox vaccination. And you know what? It was still one of humanity’s greatest achievements.

If we had to bring back smallpox vaccination in this century, the situation would be milder thanks to antivirals, vaccinia immunoglobulin, and most importantly third‐generation vaccines that can’t cause complications like progressive vaccinia or generalized vaccinia.

However, we don’t have enough of any of those things, as we learned with mpox.

For any future crisis, there will be one (1) attempt to use the advanced technology to solve the problem and if that doesn't work, then the technology will largely sit on the shelf while the elites' preferred solution shifts toward just convincing people it's not a problem at all

When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.
I am a medically lucky (in the base definition of luck) person so of course as a child I had a very bad reaction to a vaccine and ended up covered in giant welts that made it so I couldn't walk that took forever to heal and they had to make a special exception to allow me into school since I had to wait an extra year to get more vaccines, which ended up being moot since I missed 3/4 of the school year anyway due to an unrelated medical condition and had to re-take kindergarten. There was a doctor who thought I should not even get the shots at all because mumps and measles at the time seemed well on the path to being gone.

Considering that mumps and measles had a big return in the 00s, I'm really glad I still eventually got my shots.
