Errand of Mercy was great. Kor's performance makes it obvious why the Klingons became recurring villains. But again another episode where the conflict was resolved by godlike beings making everyone stand down. Where the gently caress were they during the Dominion War? Also, what are the best TNG "submarine" episodes if there are any?

So my purely scientific analysis says Season 7 is better.

There's a cute little moment in DS9's Rules of Acquisition where Dax tells Pel "you really love him (Quark), don't you?" before being surprised to find Pel's a female Ferengi, showing that Dax is cool and unbothered at the idea of gay love. Snuck that one past Berman. edit: used a word wrong

The Inner Light is great but it’s never hit me in the same way that The Visitor has. Certain scenes in The Visitor are basically guaranteed to make me choke up/tear up every single time. Can’t say the same about anything in The Inner Light, even though I’ve used lines from it in wedding toasts.

It felt like a breath of fresh air at the time, I suppose because it was actually consistently trying to be Star Trek, but it still was just fundamentally Enterprise. Shran, Phlox, and the Trip/T'Pol relationship can't carry a whole show.

It's a deeply emotional episode just on its own, but because we've spent four seasons getting to witness just deeply Benjamin and Jake Sisko love each other, in the context of the show, it's even richer. I'm not sure there's any relationship in all of Trek that comes close to the Sisko boys.

The Loss had been mentioned much earlier in the thread, so I knew what to expect, but good grief. Spending forty five minutes with mopey Troi was not fun, the nods to disability were loving awkward. The worst of it was, the stuff with the 2d cloud, despite being laden with technobabble out the arse, had the potential to be a prime type of Trek story of the sort I quite like; the "mysterious wibbly cloud thing in space". But we're mostly just stuck with Troi being unpleasant to everybody. And then, to top it off, as the end credits were rolling, I put a Mini Babybel in my mouth only to find it was rotten. Like, my teeth touched it. My tongue touched it. I didn't bite down, but I got a mouldy breathful. It was disgusting and I nearly threw up. Somehow, it was the high point of the episode. So anyway, after I'd swilled a load of water, brushed my teeth and washed my hands with a tea tree oil gel (taking care to wipe a bit under my nose to kill the smell of rancid soft cheese for good), I watched Data's Day, which was nice! Just general warm smiles at all that. A giant grin at O'Brien mentioning that he asked Troi for help and you'll never guess! Turns out she was loving useless, yet again! Nice to see Keiko is a complete dingbat from the off. And there's Spot too! Hello, Spot! So, my question for tonight: Is there actually a good Troi episode buried in here somewhere or are they all poo poo? So far, it's just been ball of light space rape, stiff romance with Sexy Bad Boy and of course, the ones with her mother, which can all piss right off. I mentioned mid way through season 1 that she was a nice shortcut to get stories moving, but is that all she's good for?

I think if you didn't like stuff like Hollow Pursuits or Menage a Troi, you're kind of not liking default Troi, but there are some good episodes that push the actress and the character in other ways that are very enjoyable. The women of TNG got several good episodes but only one great episode each. Troi's was Face of the Enemy, Crusher's was Remember Me, and Yar's had to wait until two years after she DIED: Yesterday's Enterprise.

Agree with all the above posters about Troi - she does get some better episodes, but unfortunately most of those won't come until the last couple of seasons. As for The Loss... yeah, that's a rough one. You can sort of see what the writers were trying to do there, but the whole concept starts off at a bit of a disadvantage - how do you make the viewer empathize with a character losing an ability that humans don't have? And I don't think the episode really gets past that initial hurdle; the closest it gets is one moment where Troi says that everyone else feels like a holodeck character to her, but that's about it. Also, it's a little weird that Geordi barely appears in the episode, given its subject matter.

The weirdest thing about The Loss to me is that apparently Troi is the ship's only counselor. You'd assume she's have like, assistants or something that would be better people to talk to and actually trained in this kind of thing, but apparently nope, just the other senior staff and Guinan.
