Got my hair cut by a girl named Espeon. I had to ask: it is her real, legal name. She hates Pokemon but her parents love "the really old games, like Platinum."

Platinum came out after I graduated high school.

Kind of sad to hate Pokemon when you're named after one. Or I guess maybe that's why she hates it

I can think of worse pokemon names for a human than Espeon. But still, why Espeon? There isn't even an obvious nickname that isn't equally weird. At least with Lucario the kid could go by Luca or Rio.

I've been slightly baffled by the number of women I've come across in the past 6 months or so with the middle name Gay (sometimes spelt Gai or Gaie), all born in the '60s or '70s. Don't think I'd ever encountered the name before, except the actor Marcia Gay Harden.

I have an aunt Gay, born 1950ish. She’s technically Gabriel, but has always gone by Gay as she hated the masculine spelling of her full name. My mum got the same treatment with Francis (the masculine spelling) as a middle name.
I’ve also known Gaylenes and Gaynors or a similar vintage, it wasn’t that uncommon in the 50s, and wasn’t widely used as a term for homosexuality for a couple decades after.

When I was in Chicago I stayed a friend's apartment. The building was called the GAYLORD. I know it's the anglicised version of Gaillard, but it was amusing nonetheless.

I have a relative with it as a middle name, right in the same timeline.

Until about 25 years ago, there was a small chain of department stores called Gayfer(']s. Being the 1990s, that name naturally got a lot of snickering when we passed one on a school field trip.

In addition to their influential work on early Batman comics, the writer-artist duo of Bill Finger and Dick Sprang had two of the best porno names of all time. Up there with "Paul Hollywood."

Also on the subject of comics, Scrooge McDuck was created by Carl Barks, an actual human man and not a talking cartoon dog with a Russian accent like you would naturally assume.
