Non mariners may be unaware that some bouys were designed to make sounds. The motion of the waves would cause the sound, a deep kind of hooting, meant to warn ships in the fog away from disaster.

About 30 years ago the bouy off Dare Pt on vancouver island came unmoored and was thrown up on the beach at Clo-oose bay. And when the tide was just right, often at night time, the waves would roll into the disintegrating, rusted red thing, and it would emit the lowing of a dying beast.

Edit: if you google whistle bouy you can hear the sound, though we always called it a hooter bouy because it was a low sound

That's neat. I don't remember hearing about those, so I looked them up. Apparently they work with a column of water functioning as a piston, whose motion is used to force air movement to create the noise, but the general mechanism also has uses as a renewable energy resource. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillating_water_column :science:

I can’t quite figure out what that is supposed to be. It almost looks like a high voltage insulator, but the “plates” are too thin and wide. Is it some kind of fountain?

I work in high voltage electrical substations, some dating back to the 1950s...all the insulators as far as i know are made of porcelain, not clay like in this clip.

..unless this will eventually become porcelain?

Its a very typical public perception that ceramic is such a crazy unimaginably utilitarian space age material made by magic even though its just very carefully formulated mud put through a very exact oven.

I just looked up Ceramics on wikipedia and it said humanity has been practicing ceramics (pottery basically) for like 25,000 years.

THEY USE CERAMICS ON SPACE THINGS!! IT MUST BE SPACE AGE!!

They also use fire on space things. We've known about fire for even longer.
