If your autoloader on your T-72 explodes, does the crew end up hamburger or is it a survivable event for the crew? I know the Abrams is specifically designed so that an explosion like (hopefully) doesn't reduce the crew to charred gristle but I'm not versed on the survivability features of a T-72.

Ever since the T-55, Russia has basically stored the ammo in its tanks around its crew and some measure of "in" the crew compartment. If you sit in the gunner or TC seat of a T-72, you can look down and see a hole where the ammo is pulled out of. It's not really armored or protected in any way, and the best you get in the case of a cook-off is a fire suppression system that doesn't seem to prevent catastrophic explosions, nor can really mitigate any damage from a catastrophic chain explosion.

You don't even need to score a direct hit to detonate this ammo. The instant flash heating and pressure from a successful hit is often enough to cook off the ammo.

Supposedly, Ukraine created an upgrade to increase the ammo storage protection in their T-84s, but I know nothing about it.

Ammunition cook-offs happen in Abrams and Leopard 2s from time to time. I can't speak for the L2s, but I know that Germany has tried to mitigate the damage that cook-offs may do to the crews. The Abrams has a large number of fallback measures in order to make crew fatalities from an ammo cook-off be a freak occurrence. There are anecdotal stories of Iraqi crews of being struck, then being trapped inside the tank for different reasons while the ammo cooked off, then being able to later leave the tank with minor burns/injuries.

The lower strake of the side armor on a T-72 is 20mm of rolled steel at 60 degrees. 30mm can get through that, and so can the 25mm on a Bradley. What's behind it? The fuel tank. On top of that is the ammo.

for some no doubt unrelated reason, every conflict I've paid close attention to that had significant numbers of Russian tanks invariably had significant issues with tank crew attrition

leaving this relatively vague, but wrt Russian tanks, imo people significantly over-estimate just how deadly they are to be in when they get hit and conversely I think most fail to appreciate just how many other truly horrible outcomes there are beyond instant death via catastrophic ammo cookoff. Tanks and other armored vehicles existing that do reasonably good jobs of protecting crews is in my opinion one of the real miracles of modern engineering.

It doesn't help that the Soviets envisioned their tanks rolling through the countryside at full speed until they got to the Rhine, not stuck like sitting ducks in the open for months on end. The problems are much less of an issue in the former scenario.

They also assumed, quite rightly at the time, that low profile and high (forward) speed were more important than armour that wouldn't protect against getting hit anyway, because armour tech had not kept up with penetrative power during that time period. The Leopard 1 was built under the same assumption and is a similarly dire death trap.

Well, another monster with his death entered the annals of Russian history. We have witnessed the death of a man and the simultaneous birth of a “martyr”, whose portraits proud Russians will carry in their arms for years and decades to come.

Another bloodsucker becomes a national hero, putting him on a par with an endless list of predecessors who were no less bloodthirsty than the newly minted “hero”. Particularly useful is the fact that “Uncle Zhenya” is dead: according to the old tradition, “you never speak ill of the dead”, so it is possible (and even necessary) to forgive all his sins and remember only the “good”.

Another ****in, along with other ****in's (one is currently in power) will become a litmus test - as long as his name is exalted, and flowers are brought to his grave, fascism in Russia will not go anywhere. The amazing ability of the people to generate national heroes from the most disgusting criminals and bandits.

According to historical accounts, the Germans were mostly unimpressed the first time tanks appeared.

I mean in a war that completely transformed all aspects of war from ground up, what is another piece of technology, especially one that is "just" a combination of existing pieces? They had already seen armored cars, artillery tractors, giant shells thrown by massive guns bursting in the air, and don't forget airplanes...
