I think the stuff this guy's worked on are games that typically have a bunch of extraneous poo poo on the screen advertising new content or micro-transactions or something.

Yeah there are only so many ways to lay out your menu once your resolution is high enough that you don't need the text to be enormous to be legible. Screens that are 90% text haven't been needed since non-HD consoles or 320p DOS PCs

The start screen of a game can reveal a lot about how rushed the team was and how much pride they took in their work. Firefall's start screen either shows hasty shipping deadlines by a passionate team overworked, or a team that didn't care.

Good menus ... It's surprisingly difficult to find good videos of main menus on youtube, but I remember the Dungeon Siege menus being pretty wild with lots of spinning gear and animations. I think there used to be more going on in menu screens when they mattered more and games had to rely on having a fancy menu to bring the art- compare Aces of the Pacific to IL-2 Sturmovik. Aces has a very rudimentary look in play but the menus had a ton of work and art put into them to make them work, and that was pretty common in sims of this era.

Starcraft still whips rear end. Wish I could play the og Warcraft 3 again now. I love the Chrono Trigger intro screen. The Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 opening menu screens are also really cool.
