Where there's a will, there's a way. Right now half of all our road maintenance budget is spent on a single enormous highway built to service people commuting from out of town. The car brain will prop up crumbling infrastructure no matter how little sense it makes.

When gas prices were high in 2022 even people in cspam were saying it was important for the government to ensure that people could continue to use cars because otherwise it would be unfair to poor people

If necessary, the government will just pour more and more money into subsidizing car driving, and then there won't be money to build the infrastructure necessary to reduce car dependence.

There are lots of cheap bike tires, they're just heavy and won't look nice or be from a company a rando will recognize.

A lot of the nice expensive stuff (for road bikes and mountain bikes at least) is literally the same stuff they use for professional racing. Car brained comparison, it's like buying Goodyear racing slicks for your Corolla and then complaining that they're expensive and don't last long

There are a ton of affordable options for car tires with more grip in cold/wet/loose conditions, tires with lower rolling resistance, and tires that don’t puncture when they encounter the slightest bit of debris.

If you want any of those things on a bike, you have to pay the big bucks. Bike tire manufacturers have for the most part eliminated the middle of the market.

The way it gets done is by making "complete streets" or whatever it is we're calling good construction these days the default option when buiding or modifying roads.

That's how the netherlands got to where they are now. Everytime they build a new road or repave an old one, it gets updated to new standards. The US still builds everything to the same standards they used in the 1960s and then maybe throws pedestrians or bikes a bone a few years later if enough people die on it.

If you want to be able to spend that federal car money on losermodes like walking, wheelchairs, scooters, and bikes, you gotta have a plan that is 1. not too old 2. based on years of community engagement (but not too old) 3. expensive with lots of pretty pictures to impress the feds who review the funding requests, and 4. not just gathering dust on a shelf or in an old network drive--with buy-in from the engineers who draw the construction plans and manage construction

I'm griping, but a dumb harebrained idea I had in a meeting is actually becoming a bike trail this year, basically exactly how you described it.

anyway a hearty lmao to the post about capitalism and climate change because we're not fixing either of those either.

best we've got on the menu for the next few generations is "more capitalism" and "more oil", or "even more capitalism but somehow more bigoted" and "slightly less oil than the guys who said they're pro environment"

I fully expect a couple random spots here and there where there's enough rich white people to get recreational facilities while we make minority communities ever more deadly for their residents. And people will point to rich white people getting nice things and call it progress, because libs gonna lib.

It's not the engineers and city planners that are the problem, I think largely they know what needs to be done but what can be done and what is politically possible are very different things. As with all things the root cause is capitalism.

Americans, even leftists who ostensibly hate America, get weirdly defensive when people suggest they should move somewhere better. Like you say death to America but then you want to hug and kiss it when a Canadian tells you to move to the Netherlands.
