I figure the first billion people killed by climate change will mostly be poor, elderly, or very young, and in the Global South. That's unlikely to describe readers of this thread. After that, it gets harder to predict who'll be next. The ongoing drought in East Africa has killed an estimated 250,000 people, and they're all victims of the oil companies that fought to make sure this would happen.

Washington State was unconstitutionally underfunding its public education system for eleven years before finally meeting the letter of the law long enough to get the state supreme court case dismissed You can literally just do whatever the gently caress you want as long as it doesn't hurt the rich

FlapYoJacks posted:I want to see a sub-800 mb hurricane before I die. A hypercane is a hypothetical class of extreme tropical cyclone that could form if sea surface temperatures reached approximately 50 °C (122 °F), which is 13 °C (23 °F) warmer than the warmest ocean temperature ever recorded.[1] Someone needs to update that article. Only 21 more degrees to go.

The ongoing drought in East Africa has killed an estimated 250,000 people, and they're all victims of the oil companies that fought to make sure this would happen. the more you line up the ipcc maps and google earth and the major 'collapse-ish' headlines (droughts, famines, civil wars, coups), the more it looks like basically ww3 has already kicked off in the sahel. exactly in the places the IPCC predicted would be worst impacted, from senegal to somalia, there have been something like three civil wars, four coups, and a famine kicked off in the last 12 - 18 months. well deep into the hundreds of thousands already dead, and not only no signs of it stopping, there's lots of signs of it escalating in the near term (the french). in the long term, we all know what the next 20 years worth of warming looks like, even in the most optimistic scenario things are getting much worse from here. essentially we're at the point where the first bullets/artillery-shells of our climate emissions impact have started landing and are killing people en-masse. we're active participants in an ongoing and escalating holocaust!

A mistake in the assumption of that graph could be that a BOE would be just a continuation of the trends in a diminished capacity, just below the red line, which means another 5+ years of downward trends to eventually get there around 2030. That doesn't really account for any kind of system collapse or abrupt tipping points.
