I wonder if tumeric is the reason it is as yellow as it is? And if so, why is it used? Blah. Now I'm all curious about the traditions of pickling from different countries.

Samovar posted:I wonder if tumeric is the reason it is as yellow as it is? And if so, why is it used? Turmeric is a pretty common pickle ingredient. It's a natural preservative with a well-rounded inoffensive flavor that also makes for very colorful pickles (the color is pH-sensitive, so when pickled in acid it turns neon yellow.) Unsurprisingly it is very common in Indian-style pickles but it's pretty much everywhere that had access to India or turmeric, it's what gives classic bread and butter pickles their color and some manufacturers (notably Vlasic) even put it in their kosher dills.

Part 120: Episode 5, Day 1, Investigation: King of Prosecutors Music: Ema Skye ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme Before we stop in at the High Prosecutor's Office, I did want to swing back by the office to show Ema our new evidence. Here, see this? (What is this? A behavioral study of lawyers?) That line is a much better generic "don't care" reaction than most. Let's head back to the 12th floor of the prosecution building (how many prosecutors does this city need?). Music: Silence So, we learned more from Angel Starr than I expected. Other than her hate for prosecutors, there was some kind of prosecutor convention yesterday, and the lucky recipient of the "King of Prosecutors" award was the unlucky recipient of a dead body in their car trunk. Now, who could that star-crossed individual be, I wonder...? Quite a change from your office, really. Thanks. (A trophy? What, that shield?) It takes real nerve to display stuff like this. Oh, you have no idea... Phoenix Wright... Sound: Realization Speak of the devil... (That voice...!) Ta-da! It's quite nice to see a familiar face here. Long time, no see, Edgeworth. Music: Investigation - Opening Huh? Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Stab 2 ...! Sound: Light Bulb You know him from somewhere? My sister introduced us once, and... (Right... her sister is the Chief Prosecutor, after all.) Well? What brings you here? I can't believe this game made me love Edgeworth after how Episode 2 went. I'll keep that in mind with the horde of new characters being shoved down my throat in this episode. N-no! Did I...? No! Sound: Light Bulb It was just, Mr. Wright here, he... Hey! Don't blame me! Sound: Stab Murder...? Hmm? Sound: Realization Music: Silence The music actually cuts out when Edgeworth changes sprites up there. I'm not sure I like that look he has. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat!? Sound: Damage 2 Y-y-y-your car!? Sound: Stab 2 (I'll say one thing, she certainly can scream.) quote:If we hadn't talked to Angel yet and heard all about her feelings on prosecutors, we actually get a different scene: Music: Investigation - Opening Phoenix I hope you billed Edgeworth a lot of expensive hours for that last episode. Prosecutors seem to be highly-compensated in this world. Lots to look at here. A work desk. It's quite tidy, as one might expect. It's polished so well I can see my own reflection. The hell? (Strange... Why did I just picture Detective Gumshoe?) Don't. He'll sue you. We haven't actuallly identified the victim yet, other than he was a detective. Gumshoe has shown up in the profiles with his usual "in charge of the initial investigation" description, despite not making a physical appearance yet. So I'm guessing (hoping) it's not him. Could be the guy whose wallet and ID we found? Have we met any other detectives? quote:If we had entered the office and not encountered Edgeworth (by skipping talking to Angel), then the first part of the scene is the same, but instead of the weird flash of Gumshoe, we just get this line from Phoenix: Hey, a chessboard! Sound: Light Bulb I'm not too up on my chess but it looks like Blue's in a bit of a tight spot. Huh? And check out that poor pawn, his head is kind of spiky... Kind of reminds me of you. Sound: Realization (Edges... surrounding a pawn with spiky hair... Nah... It's nothing.) I'm going to assume that tortured dialogue worked better in Japanese. quote:Once again, if Edgeworth isn't in here, the scene is slightly different. In this case, the previous two lines are replaced with a more generic one from Phoenix: Whoa! These are all case files!? Sound: Light Bulb Odd... I thought Edgeworth wasn't good with heights. Sound: Realization He must have someone get them for him. Wasn't that earthquakes? So... Gumshoe is polishing Edgeworth's desk, and pulling case files off of high shelves for him? I don't get it. (Strange... Why did I just picture Detective Gumshoe?) You wouldn't say that if you saw him sweating bullets up on that ladder. I went and double-checked Gumshoe's profile here to make sure nothing had changed. Edgeworth is still the same, too. This game has made me paranoid. quote:If Edgeworth isn't present, then the first two lines from Ema are the same, but Phoenix's reaction is different: Oooh! Cute! What a pretty tea set! I go more for the instant tea bags myself. They're all sorted by place of origin and flavor! Sound: Light Bulb (There's such a thing as taking a hobby too far...) At first I thought it might look like the bellboy's tea set, but it's actually pretty different. Whoa! I guess you would feel... important. Incidentally... ... Got it! Sound: Light Bulb Approximately 3.23 seconds! (That's handy to know...) (Nerd note: This answer is only correct if you ignore air resistance.) I'm pretty sure I tried to click on the statue, but apparently they're a set item. No kidding. Hey, there's a card on it... Sound: Realization Ah, Oldbag. She's referring to Edgeworth's career getting resurrected I guess? ("Wendy"...? I've heard that name somewhere before.) Wow, I want one! Huh? There's something written on the bottom of his foot. Sound: Realization I do like the image of Oldbag stalking Edgeworth and sending him gifts. And Edgeworth either being clueless enough or genuinely grateful enough to proudly display them in his office. Wendy? Is she Mr. Edgeworth's fiancée? Um... I don't think so. This scene would've been better without that flashback. Subtlety is not this episode's strong point, but... Look at Ema's sprite there. She seems upset at the idea of Edgeworth having an admirer. Her crush on Edgeworth has given her some much-needed depth in this update. quote:Of course, if Edgeworth wasn't here with us, the first line is different and we don't get the last two lines or the flash of Oldbag. Instead: Wow! This jacket is even lacier than his usual ones! Sound: Light Bulb Lucky jacket, right... I've never seen him wear it. Obviously not, since we beat him both times. It can't be lucky if he loses! Maybe I'll be naughty... and take a picture! Sound: Photo Snap (She's getting way too excited about this.) quote:If we had entered the office without Edgeworth coming in on us, we get a different conversation about the jacket. I've been wondering... what the heck is this? It has a big "K" on it. Huh? What's that? Sound: Light Bulb It's the "King of Prosecutors" trophy. Sound: Realization K-K-K... Music: Silence "King of Prosecutors"!? Sound: Objection What! So? Sound: Damage 2 So that "K"... that's... "K" stands for "King"? Sound: Realization Sound: Stab 2 I didn't design the thing! Edgeworth being all embarassed and defensive about his trophy is adorable. Music: Investigation - Opening Sound: Select Jingle Hmm that was unexpected. Looks like we can examine it again. quote:Another examination where if we hadn't talked to Angel, so Edgeworth hadn't shown up here yet, we get a different scene here. So that's the "King of Prosecutors" shield, huh? Well done, Edgeworth. You must be proud to be the King of Prosecutors! Please, stop saying that. Sound: Realization (That still doesn't explain one thing...) (Why is the tip of this shield broken off?) Sound: Realization And here I thought the game would make me deep-examine the evidence to point that out. Not that we get an answer. Mr. Edgeworth has such a comfy sofa! Sofas like this make me want to curl up and take a nap. Then he takes off his jacket, rolls up his sleeves... And goes to sleep using his arms as a pillow! (I don't believe it. She's actually daydreaming about Edgeworth working...) He's so cool! Sound: Realization Sofa-hair is cool!? Sound: Realization quote:Once again we get a more generic scene if we don't know that it's Edgeworth sleeping on that sofa. I think that's everything to see here. These scenes are a lot busier than in the main game. Let's go through our evidence now, starting with giving this trophy a closer look. I like the fist holding the shield. The shield itself sure is noticeably broken from this angle. Something on the bottom? Sound: Light Bulb Clicking on something automatically orients the object in a way that makes more sense for whatever the game is about to say. Hm. It looks like the names of all the previous recipients are engraved on it. Wow. One guy's listed a bunch of times! Uh, yeah. That's probably it. Sound: Light Bulb I'd like to meet this Mr. "von Karma" sometime! (When she says it, his name does have kind of a ring to it...) I think I know why Edgeworth is embarrassed by this trophy. Let's unscrew our badge and wave it around at Edgeworth for old times' sake. What? You wanted to be a defense attorney, Mr. Edgeworth? Sound: Light Bulb Yet, my path is laid out clearly before me... Dude you're only 24, I'm pretty sure you could make a slight change in career paths if you wanted. Maybe Edgeworth can tell us who this guy is. Say, Edgeworth, I was wondering about this... M-Mr. Wright! Sound: Light Bulb Huh? What? Oh. (He'll take it for sure, won't he.) *sigh* But then my sister would be found guilty! (If she sighs any deeper I'm going to start getting depressed...) Back to the trophy... So, basically, this says you were the best of the best last year, huh? Sound: Light Bulb I lost a day of work to receive that travesty. Huh? Why's that? Wait, was it broken when he got it? The Police Department? ...There's a difference? Where Detective Gumshoe works? Yeah. Um, I was wondering something about your shield... Why is it broken? Oh. Right... (He doesn't seem too concerned about his award, for better or for worse.) Edgeworth lost his first two cases ever and then helped take down his mentor and the guy they probably would have named the trophy after. I wonder if he's just feeling like he didn't really deserve it? Maybe... we should ask him more about yesterday? Guess so... So, the body was found in your car? Go ahead, say it, Wright. You think I did it, don't you? There's something shifty about this sprite. I can't shake it. N-no, we don't think you did it! Sound: Whack Uh, wait, no, she didn't do that! I mean... Sound: Light Bulb Wait... Y-yes, sir! Ema Skye! It, uh... (Now that didn't sound forced at all...) Ah, now I remember. You've... really grown. I'll admit, it was a surprise for me, too. More surprising still... Music: Silence Sound: Realization Sorry, was I supposed to be surprised by that one? I can understand... W-wait! ...What did you say!? Sound: Light Bulb She can't prosecute herself, so I'll be the prosecutor at the trial tomorrow. You!? Sound: Stab Mr. Edgeworth... Music: Investigation - Opening To be honest... What do you mean? Rumors. Sound: Realization You've heard the rumors about me, haven't you? Music: Silence (Miles Edgeworth...) Music: Recollection ~ The DL-6 Incident Wh-what? That's crazy! Hmph. Well, the last prosecutor we faced turned out to be the killer... It's a fact of life. Impossible to stop. But... Music: Silence Is the award ironic? "Congrats, you're just like von Karma!" They think it's funny. (Toys? That bronze shield? There's got to be a story behind that one...) Music: Investigation - Opening Edgeworth is a long-winded fellow to interrogate. It was my first big case. That's right, I remember. (Two years ago... I wasn't even a lawyer yet.) It appears I was mistaken. M-mistaken!? Why? Sound: Light Bulb But I'm sure she felt some responsibility for you! Then... why? Why did she stab someone in the trunk of my car? Sound: Realization ...We're still sure Edgeworth didn't do it, right? Wha... Whaaaaaat!? Sound: Damage 2 Music: Silence Mr. Edgeworth! Your knife was the murder weapon!? Sound: Select Jingle So how did Lana and/or the victim get access to Edgeworth's trunk? Um... Edgeworth? What? Are you sure you didn't do it? Sound: Realization ... (C'mon, can't he take a joke?) Sound: Whack Music: Investigation - Opening Could you tell me more about yesterday... the day of the murder? Cleaning day? Working with the Police Department, we sort and file all evidence for solved cases. Wiping your hands of old cases, in other words. Oh, and another thing... A ceremony was held at the Police Department. And that's when you got the shield? That's... very precise. Sound: Light Bulb No, I place little faith in my memory. Edgeworth is a fountain of evidence for us today. This is the parking stub from the underground lot. (The murder took place around 5:15...) So the murder happened right after you got back. What, Wright? Once we've talked to Edgeworth about his trophy and gone through the rest of his topics, we get interrupted... Um...! Sound: Door Opens Oh, no. And this update was going so well, too. You know what let's just end the update here before we deal with this guy.

Hey, look at that, Edgeworth found a sense of humor. Granted, it's bitterly cynical, but it's a start in the right direction. And yes, the joke with Gumshoe is that he does indeed play janitor for Edgeworth in part due to his admiration for him (and perhaps partially out of a sense of trying to appeal to Edgeworth to not slash his living wage any lower). You know, I don't think I ever inspected the KoP award to notice the detail about von Karma having received it multiple times. I thought he just didn't care for accolades, but that gives a different meaning!

Having found out that the mentor he idolized and modeled himself after was... well... everything von Karma was, it makes sense that Edgeworth is trying to get out of being mini-Manfred. I'm guessing the shield is supposed to be broken, to symbolize defeated defenses? Because an unbroken shield makes no sense as a symbol for prosecutors. also, you'd think, after the revelations about von Karma's crimes and the motivation behind them, they'd reevaluate the King of Prosecutors award. Or at least strike his name from the list. EDIT:VVV there's a difference between racism (particularly Lovecraft's "putting the 'phobic' in 'xenophobic'") and murder. One is a social ill we only recognized relatively recently; the other has been Crime No. 1 since the inception of laws. Especially glaring, considering this is a prize for prosecuting the law. If Lovecraft had been guilty of plagiarism (or killing someone), fairly certain they'd have changed the bust much earlier. NullBlack fucked around with this message at 23:50 on Sep 2, 2023 |

You'd think that, but tradition tends to be pretty tenacious. The World Fantasy Award for genre writers used to be a bust of noted racist H. P. Lovecraft from the creation of the whole thing in 1975 until 2015, and it's not like people discovered any groundbreaking news about the man.

Part 121: Episode 5, Day 1, Investigation: City's Finest Sound: Thud 2 What a goofus. His facial drawing style is not remotely like the rest of the cast. Also... is that a bandage on his left hand? Like Lana had? Sound: Whack I'm Edgeworth. What is it? Sound: Whack Report? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Whack Music: Suspense (I don't like the way this conversation is going at all...) Er... Skye, sir? Sound: Realization No, sir! Sound: Whack ...! Sound: Light Bulb Music: Silence (I think I just heard Edgeworth's lid blow.) Now that is a great line. I made a clear request to the Police Department, did I not? Sound: Whack Sound: Whack Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution Sir! But, but sir! Sound: Whack Sound: Whack Can we take it ourselves? Maybe it's for the second stabbing that I'm still semi-convinced happened in that prologue. I wasn't aware of the particulars of your arrangement with us, sir! Give me your name! Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Whack Right. Officer Meekins? Music: Silence Take your report and leave. And good luck with that raise next month. Sound: Realization (Poor guy. Looks like he was absent on the day they gave out brains and good luck.) The city's finest at work here. Officer Meekins flees the scene. Sound: Realization Y-yes, sir!? (Gah! He caught me off guard!) Sound: Whack As you can see, I'm busy. You may leave now. L-let's do what he says, Mr. Wright! Go down to the Police Department. You can ask more there. U-uh... Thanks. (He seems to have finally calmed down at least.) Music: Investigation - Opening Before we go, we have two new pieces of evidence to show off back to Edgeworth, even though he just gave them to us. I'm busy preparing for tomorrow. Especially not with you. L-let's go, Mr. Wright! (Fine. I'll just have to talk to him when he perks up.) Edgeworth says that no matter what we show him now. So let's look at this knife a little closer. The knife just has the victim's blood on it, no big deal. This must be the victim's blood, right? Either that, or Edgeworth cut himself peeling an apple. What's Edgeworth doing with a knife like this anyway? Edgeworth? In the wild? I think my fruit-peeling theory is more likely. Sound: Realization Sound: Whack (Now there's a scary thought...) He did get on a boat on a lake that one time.... This parking stub establishes a very specific timeline that we probably have all wrong already. "Miles Edgeworth - 17:12"... This is dated the day of the crime. If only he was held up at a couple extra red lights... he wouldn't have been caught up in this whole affair. Perhaps... I think if Edgeworth had shown up five minutes later, the murder would've just happened at 5:20 instead. The back of the parking stub is blank but has an odd backing. quote:It's possible to present either the knife or the parking stub to Edgeworth before he shuts us down, but not both (since the scene with Officer Meekins is triggered once we've acquired both items). However presenting either item results in the same scene: We are once again struck with pathing issues, as we can't leave this place except through the parking garage. Music: Happy People While we're here, we can show Angel all our new toys. Despite his grumpiness at the end, Edgeworth sure was generous with us today. Could you take a look at this? You! Y-yes!? Did they forget to put something in her hand for this line? Uh, no, but thanks. (She didn't even look at me.) We "pre-infuse" the leaves with steam before brewing. (The only thing I'm smelling here is wasted time...) Yeah she doesn't care about any of our new stuff. Neither does Ema. Looks like we're just left with going to the Police Department. A place that is somehow distinct from the Criminal Affairs Department we visited so often last episode. Music: Silence Why do I get the feeling we're not going to be allowed inside? Whew... We're finally here. Beats me. That took almost 30 minutes by taxi... and traffic wasn't even that bad. Confimation that Phoenix doesn't have a car I guess. All those taxi bills I've been incurring by running to check on our office and the detention center to see if anything changed are really hurting Phoenix's bottom line. The Police Department, huh... I've only ever been to Criminal Affairs next door... Hm? Sound: Realization Music: The Blue Badger ~ I Want to Protect You Oh, wait I know. This is the "Blue Badger." They're trying to make him the police mascot. Phoenix actually remembered something from an optional examination of a background item in an earlier episode? Sound: Light Bulb Still, he does seem familiar, somehow... Forget the Blue Badger! Who's that next to him!? Sound: Realization I'm so scared of another new character right now. Or talking to Meekins again. And this music sounds like an ancient music box brought to life. It gives the Blue Badger horror movie vibes. Uh oh. He noticed me. He sure is running over here fast... Music: Silence Sound: Stab Oh thank goodness, it's just Gumshoe. That's my line, Detective Gumshoe. Specifically, why were you dancing over there? Sound: Light Bulb (Well, at least he doesn't seem to be busy. This is our chance to get information!) Sound: Whack Phoenix's thoughts are easily visible on his face, I think. Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal We have yet another new set to examine. Though if we're just going to talk to Gumshoe anyway, it seems like we could've done that back at Criminal Affairs. Of course, we're starting with this ridiculous thing. Uh, I was wondering about that... Sound: Light Bulb Music: The Blue Badger ~ I Want to Protect You You made this, Detective Gumshoe? N-nice work... Music: Silence Yup definitely a horror movie premise right there. Plus I'm pretty sure there was a silhouette that looked a lot like the Blue Badger in one of the prologue flashes... Poor Blue Badger... fated to dance until he drops. Sound: Select Jingle Now this evidence isn't surprising at all. I expect this one will take a long time to pay off, however... Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal The usual wanted posters are hanging up on the bulletin board here. <<Do you know this face!? If you do, dial 911!>> Sound: Light Bulb I've never seen anyone who looked like the people in these posters. They hardly even look human! Sound: Light Bulb ... Are these badly-done police sketches? I always get excited when I come to a police station. Why is that? Huh? Sound: Light Bulb You know, with all the police and criminals. W-well, I don't know if this is all that exciting. They're probably talking about the latest bust! ... Funny, I thought they were talking about the weather. I think Ema just gained a third personality trait. She's almost endearing now. The banner here is announcing the "Crime Fighting Campaign." Nice slogan... Isn't that basically just their main job? I don't think it's that kind of campaign. Sound: Realization What family wouldn't want a set at home? I think most families can figure that out without the extra help. To stand out against all the single-color cars out there. No idea. Why? ...Or that. Sure. A panda...? Sound: Realization Um... do you mind me asking how you came up with that theory? We had just been at the zoo, see... ... What about zebras? Or did they not have those at your zoo? See, that conversation would have been a lot more annoying two updates ago. Now it just comes off as cute. The detectives in there look pretty busy. Just imagine! Right now... Sound: Light Bulb ... I'm color-blind so someone else (user fatsleepycat) had to point it out for me, but Ema literally looks out at the world through rose-colored glasses there. Look, that patrolman is saluting the other guy. He must be a detective! ... Sound: Realization They make a good pair. We've acquired a good bit of evidence already, but none of it seems immediately useful yet. Maybe Gumshoe can help us out with it. Detective... here's my attorney's badge. Real men show their police badge. 'Nuff said! (Wait...) (Speaking of ID cards, I found that detective's card, didn't I...?) I guess there's a reminder there in case we thought showing the ID card to Gumshoe would get it confiscated or something? It's up next in the rotation, anyway... Um, Detective Gumshoe? What can you tell me about this? You can't just keep that! You have to turn it in to the police! ...Feeling great about showing this to him. (Meaning Detective Gumshoe must drop his card a lot.) Music: Silence Goodman... Sounds familiar... Sound: Realization ... Nah, my mistake. Sound: Light Bulb Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal Music: Silence Whoa!!! Now I remember! Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Whack (That's what I thought...) Can you tell us more, Detective Gumshoe? Nice to have some confirmation, despite the attempted fakeout. Further information is awkwardly tucked away in a newly-unlocked talk topic; Gumshoe doesn't actually answer Ema here. On a hunch, I presented the ID card again. You can do just about anything these days with a card and the right secret number... scary! It's only scary because you keep dropping your card, Detective Gumshoe. I forget my secret number a lot, too. It's scary! Aww, Phoenix, you made him feel bad. Sound: Damage 2 (I think I'll stay out of this conversation.) Hey, that's it! Sound: Light Bulb Were you at the awards ceremony, Detective Gumshoe? Ah... congratulations. And... why is it broken? Oh, there's a reason. (Apparently, he's forgotten.) The best theory I heard (from user NullBlack) was that the shield represents defense and it's broken because prosecutors break through the defense to win cases. But would the trophy be relevant to the case if it was supposed to be broken? Even with all the naysayers in the Prosecutor's Office. Sound: Realization ("Naysayers"? Must be because of the rumors...) What would drive Chief Prosecutor Skye to do such a thing? ... Sound: Realization Sound: Stab Gumshoe is like our best supporter now. Someone who must have, um... Someone who must have a grudge against Mr. Edgeworth! (The car and the knife do seem a little too well-organized to be a coincidence.) (We have to find out a little more about what's going on with Edgeworth...) There's an interesting theory. Is Lana confessing to protect Edgeworth? After last episode, who else wants revenge against Edgeworth? Someone related to Yogi or Karma? Presenting the parking slip of course gives the same scene as the knife. We have something new here to examine, however. Unfortunately the Dancing Blue Badger doesn't get a detailed examination option, we just get a close-up of it. It's not even moving! Let's present it instead. As a detective, I have to keep my mouth shut on that one. No, I wouldn't want you to do that either... Good. That's his generic "don't care" reaction, but it's kind of weird that he doesn't have anything more to say about the dancing mascot he set up. Let's get down to business. The third topic here was unlocked by presenting Goodman's ID, and the fourth topic was unlocked by presenting both the "King of Prosecutors" trophy and either the knife or the parking slip. But we'll start at the top as usual. I'll give you one word of advice, pal. Wh... Why not? Sound: Damage 2 Huh? Sound: Light Bulb Well... It's just that the Chief Prosecutor has confessed to the crime. But, what if she's not telling the truth!? Sound: Whack Sound: Light Bulb B-but what if the evidence was faked? Music: Silence Huh? Me? Why is this little girl so peeved at me? Whoa!!! The Chief Prosecutor's little sister!? Sound: Stab 2 Sound: Whack Sound: Damage 2 Yessir! Oh, by the way. Sound: Light Bulb You might want to keep your voices down. Sound: Realization Huh? Have you tried not having prosecutors that fake evidence? Don't think I've forgotten about Mia's "revised" autopsy report. Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal So... what are you doing here, Detective Gumshoe? Me? Oh, well... nothing, really. Sound: Realization Detective Gumshoe! What did you do this time? Whaddya mean, "this time"!? Sound: Stab Then, what happened? I mean... with my sister's case and all... Only the highest-ranked people are being let into Criminal Affairs now... They're not letting any of us rank-and-file detectives in at all. None of you? Sound: Light Bulb (I know this is an important trial, but isn't that a little odd?) Smells like a cover-up to me. What if our victim, "Goodman," wasn't really all that good? Or is the conspiracy more about targeting Lana and/or Edgeworth? Um... Isn't there anything else you could be doing? The Chief of Police himself is directing this investigation, pal. Besides, the prosecutors have already said they'd be giving Gumshoe a bad review, so why work hard now? Officer Marshall... (Now that I think about it, Ema did seem to know that Marshall guy.) Sound: Whack More strange behavior from the police on this case... Maybe learning a little more about the victim will help us figure something out here. So... this ID card belonged to the victim? Detective Bruce Goodman. Hmm... Don't you think it's strange? More importantly, how could the police have possibly missed it? Did Marshall want us to find it? There was an evidence transferal for a case he handled two years ago. Ok so it's about 99% likely that the case two years ago is the motive for this murder somehow. But... Detective Goodman was killed at the Prosecutor's Office... Well, that's the thing... It's hard to say this, but... Sound: Realization (And Lana's confessing as much...) poo poo, Lana, you don't make anything easy, do you? As mad as I'd be if I got all the way through the episode just to find out she really was guilty the whole time, a small part of me would also find it pretty funny. Maybe she's guilty of something from two years ago... He's in a tough spot, again... "Again"...? Sound: Realization Sound: Wipe Sound: Weak Gunshot Sound: Dump I'll forgive the unnecessary flashback here just because this episode came out years after the original game. But Mr. Edgeworth was found innocent! Sound: Whack Forging evidence, making deals with witnesses... Nothing outright, but there were always whispered rumors. Gumshoe doesn't seem to be as gung-ho about defending Edgeworth's reputation as he was in earlier episodes, either. But... but there's no evidence against him! Combine the political connections with his quick rise through the prosecution ranks... It's only natural that people would be suspicious. (I had no idea he was under the gun...) Anyway, this latest case has started a new rumor. People say the only reason he took this case... ...So? Closing a big case is something a prosecutor aiming for a promotion would typically do, isn't it? Of course, if he set up Lana to get her out of the way, well, that's a different story... W-what!? Sound: Whack But I know the truth, pal! Sound: Damage 2 Now that one I don't believe. Though I do wonder if, after his experiences the last several months, Edgeworth might have taken the case to give Lana as fair a shot as he could... Now that we've exhausted Gumshoe's topics and examined the Dancing Blue Badger to get it into the Court Record, we get a new scene to keep us moving. ... Music: Silence And that's all I know about that. Thank you! Why aren't you handling this case, Detective Gumshoe? We met the guy who is... what was his name? The guy in the parking lot... That'd be Officer Marshall. Officer Marshall... Is he some kind of Wild West sheriff or something? Sound: Realization From West LA. For a moment there, I wasn't sure. I do like it when the game acknowledges its own ridiculousness. Sound: Select Jingle Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal (I'll be surprised if this gets us anywhere...) Of course we first have to look at this lovely new "evidence". Hey, look here! It looks like something's been crossed out. Sound: Realization Let's see... "Annual bonus: $20." Sound: Light Bulb gently caress that. I'd be spending the whole work day dancing with the mascot, too. No, that sounds about right. (At least in that detective's case...) Other side is blank. This new evidence examination system has yet to pay off in any meaningful way, but I guess some extra dialogue for looking at evidence again is nice. Neither Gumshoe nor Ema react upon seeing the letter, and the detention center is still empty, so it's back to the crime scene for us.

This new case is a clear expansion of game capabilities. Bravo on that. Good to see our pal Gumshoe again too.

Meekins is one of those cases where it feels like his art style is wildly jarring from the characters you're used to. Marshall and Angel for instance look a bit more polished, but they still fit in with the recurring cast like Gumshoe. Meekins has exaggerated expressions and proportions, and I know they were trying to sell it as 'goofy' but ehhhh.

What did Meekins do to earn such hatred? The guy just came to deliver a report and everyone hates him/calls him stupid? DKII posted:Officer Marshall... Is he some kind of Wild West sheriff or something? I really love this joke. Marshall is great. Also, why is there a handprint on the Blue Badger's face? Did Gumshoe touch it while the paint was wet? ...Is the Blue Badger the murderer?

I'm assuming Marshall is Japanese in the non-localized version, and I feel like that's pretty charming. Just a literal Rawhide Kobayashi working the beat in downtown Tokyo or wherever it's set.

I had a moment where I considered animating Gumshoe's sprite to do the badger dance. Then I reconsidered doing anything resembling effort.
