Tbh I think that the thread is mega weird with respect to Teslas. If it were according to this thread, they would be murderous pieces of poo poo on wheels that randomly combust.

Instead, observing real life, it just seems to be a popular EV that people drive around completely normally? The owners of Teslas that I know (2), who are not Elon fanboys, are contented with their acquisition.

Goon echo chambers are weird

If we're doing anecdotal experience, neither of the people in my life who drove Teslas had them for more than two years, they both threw in the towel citing maintenance costs. And here in good ol' Baltimore Teslas definitely rank among Challengers and 3-series in the pantheon of drivers who will absolutely just shove their cars through your life.

I think it probably also has a lot to do with Tesla's litany of deplorable practices. Setting aside the recent battery range stuff, here are a few highlights:

Investopedia posted:

On July 17, Tesla settled a 2020 compensation lawsuit over claims that directors overcompensated themselves.3 On July 11, Tesla settled a class action lawsuit with Tesla Solar Roof customers over 2021 price hikes.4

In June, 240 Black employees testified to “rampant racism and discrimination” at Tesla’s San Francisco Bay Area factory, including the use of racial slurs and references to slavery, in connection with a 2017 individual lawsuit that may be scaled up to a class action.5 That’s separate from a different racial bias lawsuit that ended with Tesla being ordered to pay $175,000 for emotional distress and $3 million in punitive damages in April.6

In May, Tesla owners filed a class action lawsuit saying software updates either depleted vehicle batteries or caused total battery failure.7 In April, Tesla was hit with another class action after Tesla employees internally shared images and videos captured by customer’s vehicle cameras.8 In March, Tesla was sued in two antitrust lawsuits alleging the carmaker monopolized repairs.9

In February, Tesla was sued for “false and misleading statements” about the effectiveness and safety of its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving.10 A similar but separate lawsuit over the same was also filed last September.11 The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is investigating Tesla’s steering and driver assistance systems, last month publicized a letter it sent to the company in August 2022 requesting more data on the Autopilot and driver assistance systems technology.

Like sure, I could roll the dice on a EV with a history of being wildly misrepresented that is markedly less safe and substantially more expensive than it's competitors, or I could just get a Prius that won't leave me trapped inside the car if the battery runs out.

While I agree that there's a bit of tribalism running through the thread, I think some of it is a natural consequence of Tesla's vehement fanbase bending over backwards to defend an overpriced, underdeveloped piece of trash.

I can't say I see any notably bad driving from Teslas.

I only ever seen two Teslas around here and only ever at the intersection before the on ramp to the highway. Glad to say they both make use of the advantages of electric motors and accelerate to highways speeds quickly.

The only thing worse than a Tesla is people who merge onto highways doing 20 under the limit.

They need to die.

The only way to get huge fast is to insult a passing witch and hope she curses you with Beast-strength.

I drove an electric Volvo around LA for a few days. It was quite nice. It felt like a regular Volvo, except I was constantly worrying about my charge level. The massive number of miles you need to drive on a hot day means you’re basically required to charge an EV every night, and you’ll watch your charge drop precipitously in real time as you drive. So I can’t imagine how bad it is for cars that actively lie to you about how much charge you have

The pirate code is really more of a guideline, than actual rules.

One of my buddies has a Tesla but it's at the garage right now, and he says it takes literal months to fix, and there's only 9 Tesla service points in the entire country.

Personally, I love cutting off Tesla's on the freeway because I know their dumb AI autopilot will brake for me. :v:

My mum got one of those scam texts which says something like "hi mum, I lost my phone so I'm calling from a friends, and I need to to contact me via this number", and even though I pointed out that it was incredibly obviously a scam, she still demanded I contact my brother via messenger to check.
When I asked her if she'd tried just calling him, she was all "but if it's true, then there'll be no answer?!?"

I don't know if y'all remember when the Avalon Troubles were happening, with them going crazy and Toyota saying it was the gas pedal getting stuck in the floor mats? I had one during that time and the fix was to change my accelerator pedal to some electronic thing. Anyhow, every now and again I'd get looks in the rear view of the person ahead of me, they'd see it was an Avalon and they would get the hell away from me. I found it hilarious, but now I kind of feel the same about Teslas. Is it going to malfunction and ruin my day? Maybe not but I'd rather be away from it regardless.
