That's pretty much what I got it for though I only have a 1080p projector right now. It seems to be doing pretty well though. It has hardware AV1 decoder and plays the 140mbps jellyfish HVEC sample no problem, some AV1 youtubes seems to max out the CPU but it plays without dropping frames anyway. Dunno if it could deal with 8k, but let me know if you want to test a specific video.

As possible downsides are that it's not silent (though pretty much inaudible from a reasonable distance imo), Windows HDR support is ??? if that's a concern, and wireless isn't the fastest though should be good enough for video streaming. Other than the decode capability the GPU seems to be unchanged from last gen so it's a big bottleneck for games if that's a concern. Though it's enough for Wii or Switch emulation or older PC games at 720p or so.

have you cracked it open/ do you know if the WiFi card is replaceable? are any of the internals removable/replaceable?

I haven't bothered opening it yet but this guy did on an apparently identical machine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrQB1ElwoXA&t=129s

SSD and WiFi cards seems replaceable. Also the CMOS battery lol.
RAM is soldered.

But... you can just get the 16GB version if you want. There are also other mini boxes with Intel wireless if that's an important factor. They tend to be more expensive of course so I don't know if it'd be worth it vs replacing yourself.

The kit is insanely overpriced, all you need is to buy the micro servos, a cheap arduino clone or esp32 kit and then get a nerdy friend to print any of https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=animatronic+eye

even better if you are that nerdy friend with a 3d printer

If you have a Galaxy, the Razer Kishi is really good and goes on sale on Amazon all the time for like $40 or so.

I used it to do portable emulation before I got my Steam Deck.,

The normal answer is something from 8bitdo or an Xbox/playstation controller

Kinda depends on the form factor you want

Edit: also controllers like the Kishi are far superior to the clips on top of a traditional gamepad to hold a phone

My phone is a motorola, which lives in a wallet case, so controllers that attach to it are probably out unless they're really easy to put on and take off, which is fine, the main use case is long commutes on public transportation.

This and also the general vibe of the late 90s - 00s apathy and irony that was everywhere. Being sincerely into crafts your grandma would do was lame, but what if it said a cuss instead. I can understand it to a point, most of the major aesthetics of 80s craft stuff was overly saccharine and this was a reaction to it.

I got my generic macro keyboard today. It's 8 bucks on the listing I used, but it showed up as $4.50 shipped in one of the "pick 2 CHOICE items" pages for me.

The preferred way of programming these is using a program called ch57x-keyboard-tool on github. However I'm too dumb to get that working via command line in windows, so I ended up using some shady chinese software the guy in this youtube vid linked to. It was super easy but you might want to use an old scrap computer to do the programming if you're going to use that software (the mapping is saved to the device).

I just set mine up as a media keyboard and it's working great.

I was looking at those stool things before but I already have a collapsible chair like this and it seems like the stools are less comfortable/portable/practical aside from the fact that they are slightly faster to set up:

A few months ago I bought this magnetic USB charging cable: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002231745991.html

It worked pretty well but now the magnet on the plug side started disintegrating from snapping to its counterpart, making it useless and possibly dangerous if it shorts out

I got some of those cables that I’ve been using on my phone and iPad for months, thankfully I haven’t had that problem yet. I mostly like it because now it’s the same cable to charge them both - instead of separate lightning and usbc cables - but I do also like the snap of the magnet when it gets close.

They're faster to set up than they look. All you do is pull it out and stick on the fabric part basically; despite how it appears the rods all stay together and it's not an elaborate process like setting up a tent.

The plastic collapsible stools are presumably still faster but I can't actually think of a situation where I repeatedly need to set up a stool, sit briefly, and put it away but can't find a rock or log or something that would be roughly as comfortable as a stool without any back

The dimensions of the plastic stools also seem like they might be harder to transport.

If you have one can you explain how you use it?

Basically the situation in which I use the type I posted a picture of is that I bring it while biking somewhere I want to sit for a while so I don't mind that it takes ~1 minute to set up because it's very comfortable

Edit:
yeah I can see that it would be useful in that situation. Maybe also if you need to wait for a bus or something somewhere where there's nowhere to sit

Might be useful in a slow moving line. Especially if you have issues that make standing for 20 minutes difficult. Folks who use a cane rather than a more cumbersome mobility aid, but still need to be able to sit sometimes on short notice.

I have magnetic USB cables of a different design, and have suffered attrition because of that whole magnet snapping thing. Which particularly sucks because the cables/adapters I got are otherwise great, but appear to have disappeared from where I got them.

My partner has EDS and Fibromyalgia and struggles to stand for long periods of time. He has one of those stools that he uses to sit on if there's no seats on the train and to sit down on his lunch break. It's not the most comfortable thing but it's better than not being able to sit down and is actually okay to carry around. It folds down to about 2 inches thick and 9.5 inches across. It comfortably fits in a backpack and being able to just pull it open and push it closed in a few seconds is a plus compared to fiddling with a proper camping chair in his use-case at least.
