Today's job application gripe: what the gently caress is this. This is after submitting both a resume and a cover letter. It just prompts me to submit "a Document" of unspecified origin

I even tried submitting my resume again but it turns out there are no valid file types for this and the only thing I can do is click "I don't have a Document"

My guess is that whoever set up the workflow in that platform doesn't know how to do it. They somehow added an unnecessary file upload field to the workflow, and when they were getting too many random or duplicate file uploads they edited the file type

I just envisioned a possible scenario where it would take signing 8 pieces of paper and have it witnessed to torque a single bolt.

It took us 5 months to install a retractable ladder due to "unforeseeable issues" change orders and re writes. Some of these engineer firms make like $30k a pop on these minor issues.

Recently we ordered a special bolt but the problem is no one makes that same grade nut etc. etc.

If you get really sick from it it can. I don’t think that it automatically does though, so if you just have what is basically a head cold you’re either getting an attendance point (and not getting paid) or coming in and spreading it.

My best guess is that the job market just fuckin' sucks in my city, the cost of living here has skyrocketed since the start of the pandemic (even a studio apartment here costs about $15k/year more than it used to) but none of the employers have caught up. So all these remote positions avoid people from here because we want too much money compared to someone in Wyoming or whatever, and everyone hiring local seems to be just kind of waiting for CoL to drop before actually hiring anyone.

I'd gladly relocate for a job at this point but I can't afford it and no one offers relocation assistance anymore lmao

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat - you're definitely not alone. Just complete radio silence on every application while my current employer is coming crashing down.

Also, thanks for this. How do I turn my playing with machinery, ability to understand how machinery works (art projects and basic tool repair) with reference material, and previous veterinary lab work into working to put on a resume so that they won’t just throw my application in the trash? Is their a reference site for example resumes for people with a little lab experience but no degrees that wants to get into calibration?

I really, really suck at selling myself. I’ve decided to start pretending I’m helping someone else with a job search, cause I would likely spend tons of time on that instead of just getting depressed and frustrated like I do for myself.

And yeah, I still plan on eventually restarting school, but I currently have no money and bills to pay.

Do you know what a torque wrench, multimeter, or oscilloscope is? If you said yes to any of those you’re halfway in the door. If you mention the words guardbanding and uncertainties you’ll impress a hiring manager. If you throw in even the tiniest bit of theory about stuff like ohm’s law or pv = nrt you’ll stand out easily. Seriously the bar is super low for this career field. There are two people who get hired, people who did this in the military and random people off the street. If you know more than the next guy you’ll get a job. And once you’re in you’ll never be out of a job, like ever

For what it's worth this is legitimately a very powerful interview tactic - it sounds silly, but go into an interview imagining that you're not yourself, instead you are a secret agent or something posing as yourself. If you get nervous or anxious in job interview this can really help! It cements the idea that they're not judging you as a person, they're judging your performance as yourself. And no one is better at being yourself than you are.

Have had a dang chamber down for a week since it’s missing critical parts. Expected delivery was yesterday, a little odd since it was Labor Day, but not that odd since there’s always someone working. I've also heard anecdotally from hiring managers that postings that would get 4-5 applicants in the past are now getting well over 100 applicants, so there's exponentially more competition than there used to be for the jobs that are real.

I've had to go through 300+ applicants across 2 vacancies the last few weeks. Most applicants obviously didn't even read the requirements of the job and about 10% of the resumes seem to be fake (stuff like multiple names used, weird things like being at schools in Wyoming and Islamabad at the same time, weird mismatches in location and phone number and so on). It's loving tiring to spend all that time reviewing this poo poo, and then our HR department are so terrible at everything we have managed to get a grand total of 1 applicant in for interview so far.

In my experience, simply telling management how much time you are wasting on reviewing applications and how much that's costing the business will make them put a fire under HR's feet to put some actual filtering in place real quick.

We had management pointedly pin HR down and get them to acknowledge that we were losing people to retirement faster than they were hiring so HR went out and hired all their friends and relatives.

We’ve got the head count now but some of these people can’t even use a computer.
