Volte posted:I don't think you had to have played BG2 to have the Baldur's Gate brand do a lot of heavy lifting. Case in point, how many people played Dark Souls 3 as their first Dark Souls game after having heard all the hype about the Souls series but never having played them? The answer is a shitload considering it has outsold the first two games by a huge margin. Dark souls was a series that has a pretty consistent rise in sales over a five year span. The amount of non online people who probably ever even heard BG before 3 is probably pretty small

BG3’s success has been a combination of many factors. Well-recognized franchise, highly anticipated game from a beloved developer, resurgence in D&D’s popularity with Critical Role, absence of big budget CRPGs in the space for almost a decade, long early access period to iterate and build hype. And then the game was good.

Croccers posted:Was that actually dynamic or was it just a timed canned animation? Like could you do anything to speed it up or slow it down? It was dynamic. The speed that the ice cubes melted was in relation to how far they were from each other. This was the only thing in MGS2 that did this. Just because.

The bear sex reveal was a big word of mouth spreader, but that didn't come off as people being horny. It was more "lmao you can actually gently caress a bear in BG3 that's wild". The actual success was the fact that people have been incredibly hungry for a good RPG-rear end RPG, and Baldur's Gate 3 is the most RPG game I have ever played.

Yeah, the bear sex probably moved some sales, but at the end of the day it was mostly an in-demand product made by a proven developer with a popular brand and a long period of EA showing people exactly what they were getting.

I only played single player (not that I'd have played it anyway but I think multiplayer doesn't exist anymore?) and I got through the game in like 5-6 hours but I had a blast the whole time and it did some super cool stuff. Especially loved that one level that temporarily gives you the ability to switch between time periods to move past obstacles/get clear of enemies etc which is a mechanic I love. Only games I can recall that did something similar were Dishonored 2 and to a slightly different degree Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain.

its unclear to me how many people making GBS threads on starfield have actually played it at all vs just reading some negative reviews and deciding that makes them an expert on the subject that whole exchange of MarcusSA being repeatedly interrogated for what he personally experienced was cringe as gently caress. EXAMPLES?? excuse me your honor, i'm not done cross-examining i do have to laugh at the day one patch being so large though. here i go now. lol

I think we just had a misunderstanding on what each other was talking about. And man, I could not have gone further out of my way to point out that I wasn’t making GBS threads on the game but was just describing how it was different from Skyrim and somehow people STILL interpreted it that way.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is going to place in my GOTY list and it might make the top three. it's the culmination of everything the Zeno Clash series has been working toward both in themes and gameplay, it does the old "gruff PC and vulnerable escort" dynamic better than any recent AAA attempts, its aesthetics and music are top-notch. if it wasn't for that completely dogwater title then it might have stood out even in a year as packed as this one

mountain lions in RDR have an uncanny tendency to ninja behind you at crucial moments and completely obliterate your lifebar. i once lost two hours of progress in RDR2 because of a legendary cougar attack and that same cougar later encountered me in a totally different region like twenty miles from its usual hunting grounds and that may be why that video had me bent over laugh-sobbing on my desk

To be able to do that, have the game not be crippled by bugs and then roll out 5 hotfixes and 2 major patches in the following month is pretty crazy. For the record I'm not stanning, I'm trying to figure out a job for next year and stuff like that is a real good sign that project management and work/life benefits HR bullshit may actually be good.

Larians CEO/Director talked about it in an interview recently and the reason why they're able to do that is that their teams (spred around the world so that one team can use the work of another team that's currently sleeping) are very well said managed and their tool pipelines just work. It's the result of a team being allowed and given time to setup an optimized work flow rather than whipped to meet quarterly deadlines.

I am actually a bit surprised so few game developers have leaned into release automation. It's not that hard to automatically build for all platforms whenever someone commits code or assets to version control, and it's also not that hard to build some automated benchmark mode and run tests each time. You can cut a public release from that and push it out as well, including auto-generated release notes. Takes some work to build, but once you have it you can rapidly bugfix and release. Other software developers do it, and some indie developers (even some bigger ones, like the Warframe devs iirc) use that approach.

You're right in that release automation doesn't take a ton of work to build, but it does take some work to maintain; I can see that getting skimped on during crunch time, and if that starts falling apart it can cause everything to start crashing down fairly quickly. My last position wasn't game development but was software dev related in a team where that collapse had happened in the years past - there was documentation on the automation in the team wiki, but nothing functional or running.

It's a great game. Probably one of the best campaign/ story modes I've ever played in a video game. That one riding sequence near the end, you know the one I mean. And then there's online, with a few friends it's great fun but unfortunately completely abandoned by Rockstar, since GTA Online sells more.
