pretty much all the current variants, as far I'm aware, have a much faster onset than wild type. median onset time is like 3.5 or 4 days? after a week you're almost certainly in the clear

Cheers! Yeah, they're just testing everything against the spike protein again.

Outbreak.info is slow updating the more recent sequences, so the comparisons below are only based on the first nine of the submitted BA.2.86 in GISAID. It's a little maddening to me that people are just ignoring these other sites where BA.2.86 is clearly very different from what's currently circulating and going "it's fine". Focusing on just S/S gene/Spike protein shouldn't be good enough anymore.

Have there been published standards for vaccine access this Fall, or are we still waiting on those?

I remember Offit making similar comments during those early meetings when they were deciding which variants to target, so he's definitely involved. 75 or older is new to me though. Could have sworn it was 65 before.

In most countries delta pretty much shot up to 100% of the sequenced variants and stayed there, shoving aside every other variant along the way. But if you look at SA's graph you can see that something has been keeping delta from going full 100% and it was even losing ground throughout October. That last data point was back on Nov 1 when delta gained some lost ground and shot back up to 97% so who knows what happened in the 3 weeks since then.

You might cool most of the house but keep one bedroom as a safe room with the vent blocked. Use tape and plastic sheeting to get it airtight, not just the louvres. This will keep your sick partner comfortable and keep the heat a little more manageable for you, with two or three cool interior walls adjoining the bedroom absorbing heat and a cool (and dehumidified) common space for cooking and such.

If in 2019 I suggested to anyone in the field of medicine or anything adjacent to it that we’d have the equivalent of two to ten severe flu seasons per year, every year for the foreseeable future—a death toll that easily places it top amongst all infectious disease and perhaps as high as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS combined—and that we should do nothing about it, they would consider this to be stark raving madness.

Now it’s considered mad to care.

Either some convergent evolution is going on, there are sequencing artifacts or it seems like BA.2.86 and BA.2.86.1 both managed to seed the world simultaneously and in good time.

This at least seems to mesh poorly with ba.2.86.x being unfit.
