rockear posted:"Consider wearing a mask, especially in a crowded indoor setting" As far as I can tell that's exactly what it is. Pausing to feel bad for a second before doing the bad thing anyway is more than somebody else did, and that means you're not the worst person in the world. Liberalism is about incremental improvement, so you can do all the same things as the worst person in the world as long as you feel weird about it for a second, because that's better than what somebody else did.

I 100% got exposed at work yesterday. This dumbass company has still not even uttered the word COVID other than that bullshit "slow the spread" campaign from like March 2020. This guy texted me after working with us for the morning and said the clinic "told him to go home (you have COVID)" around noon. I saw him still in his office with a lovely surgical mask just sitting on his desk (unused of course) while he continued to talk with everyone unmasked in the 15x15 office for hours until close at 5. Not a peep from HR, everyone went to some big rear end company lunch thing too so literally everyone in the office has been exposed. Stupid diseased nation.

Is this the thread for the future bird flu pandemic too? Mutations on the bird flu virus are now enabling it to more easily infect human cells. https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(23)00891-7

Pingui posted:I thought this was interesting, as it explains the reduced tendency towards anosmia and parosmia. That the cells don't produce virions is imo extremely interesting and a unique takeaway that might explain why other research concluded that cells weren't being infected. so covid finds our sensory neurons less tasty than our lungs, or something, got it

nexous posted:oh well there’s nothing we can do. let ‘er rip til we get Going to be fun then: Here, we demonstrate that H3N8 viruses were able to infect and replicate efficiently in organotypic normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells and lung epithelial (Calu-3) cells. Human isolates of H3N8 virus were more virulent and caused severe pathology in mice and ferrets, relative to chicken isolates. Importantly, H3N8 virus isolated from a patient with severe pneumonia was transmissible between ferrets through respiratory droplets; it had acquired human-receptor-binding preference and amino acid substitution PB2-E627K necessary for airborne transmission. Human populations, even when vaccinated against human H3N2 virus, appear immunologically naive to emerging mammalian-adapted H3N8 AIVs and could be vulnerable to infection at epidemic or pandemic proportion.
