I ran with a quest reward six gun through half a play through as my dedicated head popper/general sidearm and had no complaints.

in other news, I found out that I guess you CAN fly to any planet in the solar system you loaded into if you'd like, it just takes fuckoff long to do because of the average speeds of ships is so slow. https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/1253?tab=description idk if this mod is necessary to add the console commands, or if they're in game by default, but if you set your ships speed fast enough it becomes viable to go to whatever planet you want in the system. for now, basically just a more annoying method of travel. but once CK is out, modders could totally populate solar system cells with more npcs, stations, POIs, make it so you can set a target and fly there automatically w/o you needing to be in the seat, etc.

Overall I don't disagree with your post, but there's one thing that I think Bethesda has historically been best-in-class at and that's the ability to gently caress off on your own and explore a hand-crafted world full of hand-crafted content. And that's the biggest omission in Starfield, there's incredibly little to gently caress off and explore. I think that's why a lot of people, like myself, are so disappointed in this game. You're not wrong that in most aspects this game delivers the standard Bethesda experience, but the one stand-out thing that they did incredibly well - the one thing that I always felt was worth putting up with their shortcomings for - wasn't even attempted this time around.

I’ve been finding all sorts of stuff like this. If you see poi’s on a planet or the star map they are worth checking out.

So far I’ve found the hale bop comet cult dead on a ship in space, an abandoned space casino, a weird prison, a ship full of tourists that wanted to talk to a dashing space captain several battlefields/battlemech graveyards, the list goes on.

This is all in the course of me just exploring I’ve barely touched non faction quests at all.

The one thing this game does need is density though, more space ships more people doing things.

That’s really interesting. One of my ideas to make the travel more engaging is adding something as simple as jumpgates to the systems. That way you’d be encouraged to do more than just sit in one place while you target things and fast travel.

Yeah that's pretty cool, I'm hoping for a mod that essentially adds supercruise from Elite while in a solar system. It's essentially a glorified loading screen but imo a big improvement all the same

Unarmed is pretty neat in that you can knock an enemy on their rear end pretty quick or stun/disarm them. Problem is it does bad damage and there's no "unarmed" weapons like knuckle dusters and whatnot. I could see swapping between it and other weapons and just using it for the various effects it can cause but as far as I can tell there's no way to hotkey unarmed.

Some people are getting corrupted saves after many hours of playing and other fun broken stuff.

I work at a partner studio so its kinda embarrassing to watch this and experience it. I'm waiting for a chest beating meeting about how great its doing to complain about the PC accessibility. They did a big parade ~3 years ago about being 'all in' on PC and poo poo (because console is basically saturated at this point) and this game is 100% proof they don't plan to change.

Aw man that sucks. Unsurprising though. The Bethsoft corrupted save tradition is still alive.

Hey just wondering, regarding the extrovert trait (which I picked to compel me to change from being a BethSoft lone wolf, probably foolishly), do ship crewmembers count for benefits of this? If not, could someone let me know how to get the stealthiest, most morally-flexible companion is?

Since I'm currently cruising around with Sarah and man, she's such a killjoy. Complains about everything! Including me turning down some guy who was trying to rip me off. Like, why would she want me to be conned out of a thousand spacebucks? I've gotta replace her ASAP!

EDIT: Oh, and are companions unkillable, like certain Skyrim/Fallout ones? Or are only quest-related companions immortal?

Don't melee weapons not scale with level, meaning it falls behind as other weapons start getting Calibrated/Refined/Advanced versions? (same problem with industrial tool-weapons and grenades)

Just to do an experiment for myself I got off Neon and picked a totally random planet in the same system. I picked Volii Tau, which has a single "Deserted Biotics Lab" POI to land at.

I landed there and then immediately ignored the Biotics Lab, which I presume is an entire dungeon itself, instead looking for the nearest structure I could find on the scanner. A ship landed out in the distance as I was traveling and I had to ignore the temptation to go try to hijack it.

When I got there, I found a significantly sized facility built onto a large rock outcropping with some pirates and security turrets around the area. Andreja commented on it being an abandoned He-3 facility, and there was a note to find describing how the pirates found the place. In one building there was a computer I could have hacked to switch the IFF of the turrets and a locked door leading into an interior facility that I couldn't yet lockpick. I followed some pipes around to the backside of the mountain and found an opening in the rocks that let me inside there instead. There seems to be a whole little dungeon in here.

This is literally the first place I picked to go check out. Maybe there's some quest out there in a terminal or whatever that might have asked me to go here, but finding this was totally organic so who cares. This is clearly a hand-made POI and it easily passes par for what I expect from a non-narrative side dungeon in a Bethesda game, so I am not seeing the argument that this stuff isn't out there to be found.

That's not an exaggeration, it's not like most things are like that and there are a few good things sprinkled about - I mean literally every single thing.

The only locations that break the mold are quest-related.

I've been using the axe more than anything because every enemy takes a full magazine to drop.

Like, they're in spacesuits. A puncture or a helmet breach is game over in a few minutes.

I won't complain about people not burning alive in their suits because by the 2300s and all humanity living in space, nobody is going to run pure oxygen, for that very reason.

I will however complain about stealth in vacuum. You can't hear anything in vacuum by definition, so why can people detect me? IDK, maybe this is actually modeled, I haven't yet encountered anyone in a place that it's in hard vacuum who doesn't have buddies. There's also an engine limitation in that every location has to has gravity, so you can't do moves like float towards people, negating even footfall vibration, to sneak up on them or grab on to a handhold on the ceiling to ambush someone.

Andreja is the most tolerable companion I've found, but even she has too many moral hangups imo. I found a punk theft woman in a bar with a cliched “gotta get off this rock” background, but she seems kinda high energy.

I'm about to join up with some pirates, so maybe I'll find someone cool to hang out with there.

If there was a perk that let me disassemble Vasco to make a space robot dogmeat though, I'd beeline it.

I do really love the idea of a ship being a base you take with you. I never gave a poo poo about bases/houses in other BGS games, but something about the ships in this one I actually find myself sinking time into.
