One of the components of Pax makes your body take longer to filter out stuff, which means if you get high while on Pax you'll probably be higher for longer periods, so it's generally recommended you reduce or stop your intake of weed while on Paxlovid.

Careful with those, it looks exactly like the sort of business that's gonna get a nasty letter from OSHA or CPSC, since they're not rated but even make claims about using them for PPE because they use rated materials with research behind them. Like those aren't 3M masks, they just purchased 3M materials to make them.

That sucks to hear. Orthodontists are terrifying bc they put you in a cursed communal chair room where everyone is being worked on at the same time. I can never get the readi mask trick to work even with tape and they always fight me over it to take it off lmao. The bottom part of the mask never sticks for me and when I try to tape it down the tape comes off too idk wtf is wrong with my face or skin.

CDC hopes new ‘Wild to Mild’ ad campaign will tame skepticism about flu vaccines

quote:

It’s rolling out new ads it hopes will increase confidence in the vaccines with a clear, straightforward message: The flu vaccine won’t keep a person from getting sick, but it will tame that infection, taking it from “Wild to Mild” — the tagline for the new campaign.

Dr. Bill Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, thinks the CDC is on the right track with these ads. He says people have been confused about what flu shots can do.

Schaffner, who is part of an expert committee that advises the CDC on vaccines, says we have measured the effectiveness of flu vaccine the same way we evaluate the effectiveness of all other vaccines for measles, polio and whooping cough — how well a vaccine completely prevents disease.

For respiratory viruses, that bar is too high, Schaffner said.

“With these respiratory viruses, flu included, the vaccines aren’t very good at preventing milder disease. They’re much better at preventing the serious complications. And I think we have not been very clear in presenting that information,” Schaffner said. “We have to acknowledge that. We we have to say ‘Yep, it won’t prevent that mild disease. But here’s the benefit.’”

The campaign shows a ferocious animal, like a tiger, juxtaposed against something that’s not scary, like a kitten.

quote:

In focus groups, people said they liked the new campaign because it struck them as transparent, Burns said.

Burns said experts have long believed flu vaccines could attenuate illness, but the CDC felt cautious about making the claim because they didn’t have data to back it up. Now, she said, they do.

“We started measuring how the vaccine works by measuring against a pretty low bar — does it keep you from going to the doctor? I don’t know that’s so meaningful in the public’s opinion,” she said.

Now, she says, the CDC has deepened its vaccine surveillance network to look at attenuation of illness. There’s a strong and growing evidence base that vaccination does blunt a bout with the flu.

The situation is the same for the Covid-19 vaccines: A new batch of shots updated to defend against the XBB.1.5 variant and its descendants is expected to be available in a few weeks.

Schaffner said he liked the catchphrases in the campaign, but hoped there would be more education around them, too.

“This is a great start. I like the catchphrases, as long as we get some information that comes behind it or with it in order to make these catchphrases a little more meaningful,” he said.

The Baileys in Chuck Schumer’s head will love it.

This explains the sudden increase in UK BA.2.86.1 cases:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-08/uk-detects-outbreak-of-pirola-covid-strain-at-norfolk-care-home posted:

UK Detects Outbreak of Pirola Covid Strain at Norfolk Care Home

The UK has found 34 confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection by the new, highly mutated Pirola variant, most of them occurring in a single outbreak at a Norfolk care home.

Community transmission of the variant is probably taking place across the country, although it’s still unclear if the strain causes more severe disease than previous versions or will become dominant, according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Twenty-eight of the infections occurred at a care home in Norfolk, where staff and residents were asked to test for Covid after an unusually high number of people became ill, the agency said. Whole genome sequencing confirmed that Pirola, officially called BA.2.86 [ed. it was actually BA.2.86.1], was in the majority of the samples.

So far, five of the 34 people known to be infected in England have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.
(..)

Now that is a very high percentage being hospitalized, but again this is primarly (28/34) from an outbreak in a care home.

With cases mounting in Israel and abroad, some are raising alarms and making moves to combat the fresh coronavirus threat, amid concerns over a new vaccine aimed at other mutations
(..)
The Health Ministry reports that the number of people in Israel testing positive for the virus has jumped 13% overall in the past several weeks, and the rate is increasing daily.

As of September 3, the country had 1,081 active cases, with 245 hospitalizations. Forty-two of these patients were in serious condition, including five who were in critical condition. There was no information as to whether there were any deaths caused directly by COVID during this recent period.

Beyond the :britain: specifics, this is a decent read that is more or less applicable to the entirety of Europe as well:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/08/autumn-covid-booster-britain-uk-vaccine-long-covid-economy posted:

Why aren’t we all being offered an autumn Covid booster? It’s not cost-effective to keep Britain healthy
The UK’s limited vaccine offer ignores the serious threat of long Covid – and the knock-on effects on the economy
(..)
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has the tricky task of making decisions about the UK’s booster plans. Factors such as population susceptibility and infection severity are typically considered, but this autumn, the JCVI “has begun to include cost-effectiveness considerations in the development of its advice”.

This has meant that, whereas the autumn 2022 booster programme targeted over-50s for both flu and Covid, this autumn will see a more limited offer of both vaccines. Only those over the age of 65, carers, frontline healthcare workers and the clinically vulnerable will be eligible for free boosters. Flu vaccines should be available to purchase by the public but, as yet, Covid vaccines will not be. The major effect of narrowing the eligible group is that all over-50s who were previously eligible will now be at least one year out from their last booster.

This much reduced vaccine offer does pose the question: what was considered in the cost-effectiveness analysis? A cost-benefit analysis of doses administered against hospitalisation and excess deaths is clearly vital; but what about considering the cost of lost working days, reduced school attendance and new cases of long Covid? Not only that, but also the sheer devastation experienced by those struggling with severe illness and the exhaustion of frontline workers in an overstretched NHS.

The JCVI’s statement indicates that it considers there is too much uncertainty regarding the significance of post-Covid syndromes – and these were not factored into the cost-benefit analysis.
