One good thing is I'm seeing a lot of social media posting that suggests the rapid tests still work on the latest variants at least some of the time.

Sudafed and Bronkaid work really well for me, or other things like Claritin if what I have is actually allergies. Too bad the former things are annoying to obtain because they can be used to make meth, and they're also pretty good stimulants so they mess with sleep if taken later in the day.

"experts will vote on efficacy" is such a weird way to put it. As if something that can be quantitatively measured is just a matter of opinion now.

(Yes I know they are supposed to be debating if they believe the studies, if the data was gathered appropriately, etc. )

I may have overstated. Human to dog/cat transmission is thought to be quite common. No definite word yet on if they can repay us the favor.

I did find this from the CDC

I think pet to human spread is documented to have happened, but it was like literally a sick cat sneezing directly into a vet's face. I don't think it's widely considered common, but I also don't think there's been much if any study on it.

I don't know about pet to human spread, but unless it was an emergency I wouldn't (knowingly) bring my cat to a vet that had an active covid outbreak. My poor cat doesn't deserve to get rona'd even if she wouldn't spread it to me.

Yeah noone thought human to pet was common until Texas A&M started actively surveying for cases among the pets of infected owners. (Pre-omicron transmission was about 25%, and none seemed to pass it back).

sucks to be right
Buruli ulcers (huge lesions caused by flesh eating bacteria) are endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and certain parts of Australia and although cases sometimes occur in other parts of Australia it's usually in people who had recently traveled to the endemic regions, but we just had a locally-acquired case in a part of New South Wales where the bacteria isn't supposed to be endemic. They dug a little further into the situation and discovered two other similar cases which occurred since 2021, I guess we gotta redraw those 'endemic regions' lines on the map. (Be warned that most of these links will have fairly graphic photos of patients with chunks of flesh missing)
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-08/buruli-ulcer-detected-nsw-locally-acquired-batemans-bay/102833982

Scientists still aren't 100% certain how the disease even spreads but it's probably via a zoonotic reservoir and the primary suspect is mosquitoes, but it's also been found in Australian possums and possum poo poo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buruli_ulcer

Buruli ulcers are endemic here in Victoria and we usually get at least 100 - 300 cases every year, mostly out in coastal areas but also in a small cluster of certain inner city suburbs which just happens to be exactly where I live. Also my backyard is chock full of mosquitoes and possums :whitewater:
