does it actually apply? hell i dunno i'm not a lawyer. frankly the fact that you thought it was appropriate to ask this question is hilarious, an act of poor faith and stupidity only topped by me giving it an honest answer from my background reading that had nothing to do with law. but there's a US interest in ukraine, that is undeniable, and elon musk just admitted publicly that he's hosed around with it, that also is undeniable. i'd say that it's more appropriate for you to give a cohesive defense as to why he's got nothing to worry about.

Well this discussion suddenly became a lot more heated for no clear reason.

lol I see these freaks on reddit and poo poo going "But Elon did the right thing! ITAR!!!!" and I'm like, dude, no DoD in any administration, nor any NATO ally, nor sane, sensible country is ever going to prosecute you for providing Starlink to Ukraine. Not even a Trump 2024 admin would prosecute Elon for hypothetical arms trafficking laws, not just because he's insanely rich and famous, nor would it actually fall under ITAR law anyways, but also because unless the government is literally a Russian asset, it's not going to happen. Elon and our own government are constantly doing illegal poo poo and nothing will ever happen.

I genuinely was not aware of the Logan act, and it's the first time I've heard it brought up in the context of this Starlink controversy. Reading the text of it, it certainly seems like it could possibly apply. I guess it would depend on the nature of the conversation he had with the ambassador, and it'd be very interesting if :nsa: had somehow got their hands on a recording of it.

I truly didn't ask you that in bad faith, I know this ain't D&D but unless I had a history of disingenuous posting itt I don't think it's fair to claim that. Ignorance of obscure American law ≠ Bad Faith.

quote:

The Biden administration is likely to send Ukraine long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, to help in its fight to repel the Russian invasion of its territory, according to U.S. officials.

"They are coming," said one official who had access to security assistance plans. The official noted that, as always, such plans are subject to change until officially announced.

A second official said the missiles are "on the table" and likely to be included in an upcoming security assistance package, adding that a final decision has not been made. It could be months before Ukraine receives the missiles, according to the official.

I wish we could send the Kitty Hawk in there just to see how she would fare against an equal opponent, because she was the last non-nuclear powered aircraft carrier, but she was decommissioned and sent to salvage. Sad to see her go.

Right now the USS George H W Bush is patrolling the Mediterranean and would be the likely candidate to go there, but also can just chill near Greece and Turkey and send planes that way.

Russia does not possess anything that would be considered an equal opponent to the Kitty Hawk, much less the H W Bush

he officials also said the Russian military had moved key command posts and headquarters to better-protected positions out of range of Ukrainian artillery.

However, they noted that "Russian personnel still frequently communicate sensitive information through unsecure channels."

The ISW said that Russian forces still faced a formidable communications challenge due to the disparity of units operating in the same regions of Ukraine.

"Russian command is likely struggling to share information and create a common command space across these widely disparate forces defending against Ukrainian counteroffensive operations," the ISW said.

Still using unsecured channels, huh? Reminds me how in the beginning Russia bragged about their super advanced new comms system, which they couldn't use because the advancing grunts cut down the GSM towers that were required for it to work, so they had to revert to caveman communications.
