It's mostly because the US has had a bad run of luck w/r/t major hurricane strikes in the last decade.

Lee's unprecedentedness, more than anything, is the NHC being able to forecast rapid intensification better, albeit with apparently more work to be done. Other hurricanes have intensified faster.

Otherwise, the ocean is too hot and is perhaps making relatively meh hurricanes into oh poo poo hurricanes, and that's scary.
