I mean, there’s plenty of places where you could get a $175000 house with $35000 as a 20% down payment. PMI would let your down payment percentage go even lower - it certainly might qualify as BWM, but IIRC we got a mortgage at ~10% down with PMI in CA.

Times were certainly different when we bought ours in 2005, we only had to put 9K down on a 178K house.

AITA for adding on to my wife's lies to make them so stupid she will stop?

quote:

I love my wife very much, however she has one massive problem. She loves to top people and has no problem lying to do it. And they are ridiculous lies.

He sister was over with our nephews and I mentioned that the kids were getting so tall. My wife immediately pops in to say that it is because her grandfather was 6'7" and that our son is already 6'4". I'm 6'1" the kid is a little taller than me. Maybe 1/4". So I pipe up and say that he is actually 6'10.

A friend of ours just had emergency surgery for her son because of testicular torsion. One of his balls was twisted up. My wife talks about how we went through the same thing. No our son has an undescended testical and had routine surgery to bring it down. So I added that our son was actually born with three testicles and it was the extra one that was twisted.

Our daughter did very well in her final year of high school but she was not I repeat not valedictorian. But my wife tells people that she was. So I add that she did so well that the school actually made her valedictorian and salutorian.

My wife has finally figured out that if she tells these dumb lies around me I will make up even stupider lies. If I'm going to look dumb for not saying anything when she lies I may as well make the lies as stupid as possible.

She has stopped around me but she still does it. She called me an rear end in a top hat for adding on to her harmless white lies.

AITA for wearing a different colored bridesmaid dress after the bride tried to purposely make us look unflattering?

quote:

Hi, for privacy reasons this post will be a throwaway, and all names are fake.

Recently, I (28F) was a bridesmaid in my friend Tara (28F) and Tony's (30M) wedding, along with bridesmaids Amy (27F), Jane (29F) and her sister Lily (32F).

Tara was one of those brides where everything had to be perfect, so early on, Tara placed her priority on the logistics. Because of this, Tara had left the details about the bridesmaid dresses for last.

Tara had organized a lunch for us in April to talk over the details of the dresses. She handed out swatches and said that the dresses must be in that color and floor length. I asked Tara if she was being serious to which Tara asked what the problem was. Simply put, the color was ugly and unflattering. Jane also spoke up and said that this color is going to make everyone in the party look bad. Amy also agreed. Tara rolled her eyes at us and said that she was sure and she expected us as bridesmaids to go along with what she wanted. Lily decided to chime and say that she thought the color was fine. I think that she said this to prevent her younger sister from going full bridezilla.

For months, Amy, Jane and I BEGGED Tara to consider a different color, but she wouldn't budge. We asked Lily to ask her sister to reconsider, but she said that she was the bride, and that we should "respect her choices." Yeah, no poo poo she was the bride, but that doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice the way we look, and look unattractive. Amy pointed out that Tara was probably making us look bad on purpose, so that she could look better, and that made me furious.

And here's where I may be in the wrong. Amy, Jane and I decided that enough was enough and that Tara was being really unreasonable about this whole thing, and so was Lily. So we decided to lie to Tara and say that we were going to order dresses in the color she wanted and sent her screenshots of dresses in that color. Meanwhile, the three of us created a separate group chat and decided to order dresses that would actually make us look good. We agreed on baby blue and bought the dresses online. Tara didn't ask any more questions about the dresses and essentially just took our word that everything was okay.

Flash forward to wedding day. The moment we put on our dresses, Tara lost her poo poo. She started yelling at us and crying, and Lily had to escort her out of the room. Apparently she must have gotten ready elsewhere, because we didn't see her up until we were called to go to the venue for the ceremony. The wedding was great, but Tara was upset.

Since the wedding, none of us have heard from Tara. However, Lily and Tony have been texting me, calling us horrible people and claiming we ruined the wedding. Tony even said that Tara almost cancelled the whole thing, and he had to force her to go through with it. Maybe Tara was upset that we didn't get the color that she asked for, but I don't think it was right for her to make us look unattractive. AITA?

At least in the US it varies widely. If the renter is in a house with a separate meter, chances are the utilities will be set up in the tenant’s name and paid for by the tenant. But this isn’t universal, some house rentals “include” that in the rent. Apartments are more varied. Older buildings often don’t have utilities metered for individual units, and even in newer buildings that varies by utility. And same as houses, some buildings that could divide out utilities don’t and include it in rent since some people prefer a consistent monthly bill and not dealing with multiple vendors and will pay a premium for it.

Yeah, chipping in that from Africa to Asia, Australia and Europe where I have been at least, it has been normal to pay for water. In Australia, the price you pay per unit goes up with use. So, if you go over a threshold of use in a certain timeframe, your total water bill will jump at certain tipping points (the opposite of how Progressive Taxation works).

That's on top of fines if you are caught using water improperly and ads since I was a kid to minimise water use. The reckless shower usage is what jumped off the page for me out of that story as well, collage students being high as poo poo and inconsiderate to fellow flat mates is routine to the point of banal.

AITA for allowing my teenage son to go to a party that my daughters weren't allowed to go to?

quote:

My husband and I have four kids -- 21F, 19F, 17M, 14M.

We live in the same suburb that we grew up in. My husband and I both graduated from the high school that our girls graduated from and boys are currently attending.

A long-standing tradition at the high school is a beach bonfire party for the juniors & seniors after Homecoming. The party is synonymous with drunken shenanigans and all that stuff. I attended this party both my junior and senior year of high school. They were always wild. Dark night + outdoors + drinks + being on a secluded beach + all your friends + older guys = lots of fun as a teenager, terrifying as a mom.

I'm 44 and I realize now that some of the things that happened at those parties were wrong. Older graduates from the high school attended, there was a lot of coercion/peer pressure to do things we weren't always ready to do, and plus just being in the dark in a secluded place.

My husband and I both agreed that we didn't feel comfortable with our older daughter going. A few years later, our younger daughter too. Our girls have always been trustworthy but we attended those parties and knew how intense they got. My older daughter was fine with it while my younger daughter was unhappy with our choice at the time but hasn't brought it up in years.

This year our son is a junior and wants to attend the party with his friends. My husband and I discussed it and...honestly the concerns when raising daughters is just so different to raising sons. We agreed it was fine for him to go as long as he went with a group of friends and promised that he wouldn't get in the car if there was a drunk driver. He's always been trustworthy so we have no concerns about him attending.

The problem is now that he's mentioned to his sisters that he is going and they are upset with us because they weren't allowed to go. I don't want to outright say the very difficult reasons why we were scared to let them go, but now they feel that we're unfair/sexist. Just wanted to add one thing to the post: this is the ONLY instance we've ever set different rules for the kids based on gender. Even my daughters acknowledged this. This is definitely a one-off situation.

another thing that's different about raising daughters is dealing with all the resentment and anger they have for you

of course sons also can't be pressured into sex or anything like that. :D. And it's okay if their son is in a position to pressure someone into sex, if that's the main reason their daughters couldn't go, that they would be.

ABSOLUTE FUCKING GUDGEON
I kinda understand party parents. yes dudes can get assaulted in those circumstances, absolutely, but let's be honest big parties like that were a bunch of dude graduates come to prey on teen girls are set up primarly for that - creeping on the girls. high school girls are sexualized for just existing. it's a Whole Thing bc of how obsessed gross some dudes are about fresh young 'fertile' women

That said, maybe they shouldn't let their son go to a party designed to teach him how to coerce girls and ply them with alcohol. So even though they're not as worried about him getting assaulted, they should be worried about what he learns from this party and from watching older peers engage in coercion.
