Bill Maher is the answer to the question “Are liberals bad?” He’s not even a bad liberal; he’s bad because of his liberalism.

He's not stating his own opinion here. You could argue China has a better claim on Taiwan than the US does on Hawaii since it's been a part of China for a lot longer. I personally don't agree with that argument, but it's not completely out there. I personally support both Taiwanese and Hawaiian independence if the majority of their populations want it (same with Catalonia, Scotland, etc). Taiwanese people at this time overwhelmingly support maintaining the status quo over full independence (84-88% depending on the source) so it's a little more complicated but I essentially support that. I can't find good figures on Hawaiian independence support. gently caress Elon Musk and all but this particular video isn't bad.

Shaman Tank Spec posted:That was one of the cool things about Sagan. He loved science, and he wanted to spread that love as much as he could. "The Demon-Haunted World" is basically dedicated to the idea that real science is incredibly cool, but because scientists don't get that message out, pseudo-science and outright bullshit get all the headlines, so maybe someone who understands science should write a book about the real science that's a lot cooler than the fake bullshit. I read the book for the first time a few years ago, and was struck by just how much Sagan's LOVE for science and the incredible beauty of the complexity of our world shines through from every page, and how infectious it is. DeGrasse Tyson has a love for science in the same way the bazinga guy on Big Bang Theory has a love for science - to be a joyless fuckstain who sucks the air out of a room just to show how smart he is every loving second of the day.

China's view of Taiwain being a breakaway province makes very little sense. If anything, the PRC are the breakaways. Hawaii would only be a good comparison if we had a 2nd civil war, the confederacy wins, and then presses a claim on the US government in exile in Honolulu.

Regardless of how accurate the story is about the sentiment of the Taiwanese, it's dangerous to accept at face value the propaganda of a country that's in the position to be the oppressor I feel like a better example of kinda-sorta would have been puerto rico or a different non-state territory anyway. The genius savant of international politics knows those exist, right?

One of the things with Twitter is that the point of it (or at least one of the points of it) is to encourage users to weigh in on things they only sort of understand. Arguably it could be relatively harmless to have a platform where non-experts can opine on things that interest them; can amateur hobbyists ever discuss geopolitics, military history, etc.? But then you get to prominent people with huge audiences like Musk and Rowling who get treated as experts on things like geopolitics and gender even though they are just your standard non-expert idiot like most of us.
