Unity's current CEO is a known greedy piece of poo poo who's insistent on monetisation.

From the Slay The Spire thread:

Vermain posted:

the short version: unity recently made a change to their licensing agreement that would increase licensing fees, including things like a surcharge for every install of the game a person does on their device, which would also apply retroactively to any games made before the license change, so every major player in the indie scene is getting the pitchforks out

Some more context: Unity went public as a company (meaning they're subject to the vagaries of the investment market) in 2020, and their CEO is an avaricious psychopath who makes Bobby Kotick look like a kindly Santa Claus.

This entire thing is a naked cash grab to juice as much revenue (and stock growth) as possible before they all dump their bags and parachute away from the crashing tower.

Unity silently removed their Github repo to track license changes, then updated their license to remove the clause that lets you use the TOS from the version you shipped with, then insists games already shipped need to pay the new fees.

After their previous controversy with license changes, in 2019, after disagreements with Improbable, unity updated their Terms of Service, with the following statement:

quote:

When you obtain a version of Unity, and don’t upgrade your project, we think you should be able to stick to that version of the TOS.

As part of their "commitment to being an open platform", they made a Github repository, that tracks changes to the unity terms to "give developers full transparency about what changes are happening, and when"

Well, sometime around June last year, they silently deleted that Github repo.

April 3rd this year (slightly before the release of 2022 LTS in June), they updated their terms of service to remove the clause that was added after the 2019 controversy. That clause was as follows:

quote:

Unity may update these Unity Software Additional Terms at any time for any reason and without notice (the “Updated Terms”) and those Updated Terms will apply to the most recent current-year version of the Unity Software, provided that, if the Updated Terms adversely impact your rights, you may elect to continue to use any current-year versions of the Unity Software (e.g., 2018.x and 2018.y and any Long Term Supported (LTS) versions for that current-year release) according to the terms that applied just prior to the Updated Terms (the “Prior Terms”). The Updated Terms will then not apply to your use of those current-year versions unless and until you update to a subsequent year version of the Unity Software (e.g. from 2019.4 to 2020.1). If material modifications are made to these Terms, Unity will endeavor to notify you of the modification.

This clause is completely missing in the new terms of service.

Unity have complete hosed themselves in their little "put up with it or gently caress off" monopolization bid, because it's not the consumers that are pissed with them, it's the developers. And the universal response from studios big and small has been "Go gently caress yourselves, we're migrating our projects to Unreal or Godot ASAP". Which means they're never coming back. Unity's decision-makers have utterly obliterated, potentially irrevocably, the trust in the indie dev community they've built over the last decade+ overnight.

To give you an idea of how completely hosed Unity are, even if they walked it back completely, (albeit exaggerating a little), about the only thing that might bring anyone back after this is the Unity CEO's, (John Riccitiello) head on an actual silver platter, with a place card beside it with the words "We're Sorry" handwritten in decorative cursive signed by the rest of the board and higher-ups. And even then someone's gonna need to see that head poked with a stick a few times to make drat sure he's not gonna try any more stupid monetization-driven ideas.

Unity still has a lot of developers locked in. With how tight the budgets are, trying to switch engines mid-project is infeasible for most.

However, the fact that Unity did a "we altered the deal, pray we do not alter it any further" utterly obliterated any and all trust in them. You would have to be insane to start a new project with them now.
