It's just genuinely really well crafted and a lot of fun. It has good monster designs, a story that approaches 'adult Pokemon' while still being kid friendly and avoiding any of the stuff you'd associate with 'adult Pokemon', it's genuinely really user friendly and has a lot of nice features that make battles feel more meaningful (including a by-default 2 person party which offers more flexibility), the music is excellent and they do a super cool thing with the bosses where they all represent different art styles and the game leans hard into that which makes them feel memorable and 'off-kilter' It's a great game.

I've played a few mon games this year (Nexomon 1/2, Monster Sanctuary) and while I'm not sure how I'd end up ranking it between them, it's definitely making my top 10 this year. Soundtrack slaps, it never gets old when the lyrics start kicking in. You don't really have to grind the monsters themselves, their levels are your human characters' levels, they have their own XP bar that gives them more Stickers (moves) that you can detach and attach to any other suitable mon, it's so convenient to throw teams together when every move can be shuffled around between them. And as you progress these Stickers get extra features, like a chance of being used at start of battle. I really like how the big boss fights are all done in unique styles, to sell how alien and powerful they really are. Plus that bgm is killer.

It's a stupid complaint but I feel like they're leaning into the paper style a bit too much? I liked that all the blocks stuck out as looking like they were made out of totally different materials if they weren't holding coins. Like the block museum Easter egg thing in Superstar Saga.
