Hey y’all. Got a question. I just ordered an OEM hardtop for my NC from the dealer, but I can’t seem to find any info on what it’s made of. Metal? Fiberglass? I know the NA/NB tops are fiberglass but I can’t seem to find info on the NC top.

Also as a point of reference for above, I just bought my 07 NC for $8k. Good paint, no rust, new clutch and flywheel, top is 99% (tiny wear spot on pass. side) and has Bilstein B14 suspension, GWR exhaust, Fab9 tune, and Avid1 wheels (meh). I bought Enkei wheels with RT660 tires for autox use. $16k seems outrageous.

With the Avid1 wheels

With the Enkeis

Still thinking about getting back into a Miata but I'm racking my brain on a late NC vs early ND.

Every once in awhile an ND with ok miles pops up for under 20k, but I've been seeing some low mileage NC2's for 15k or less. I really need to drive both but hate the hassle of going to dealers to do it.

Personally I'd go NC2/3 over ND1. I love my ND2 but specifically wanted the higher revving engine. NCs have hydraulic steering and supposedly better steering feel as well.

Also NCs are in the sweet spot price wise.

if you get a late NC that's the best NC they made. If you get an ND1 it may bug you until the end of time that there's one with 25 more HP and a better torque curve and redline out there.

Yeah that's what I was wondering, if it's a straight up better car overall it would be worth the extra money I think.

I'm in no rush so I have time to wait for a good deal on a private sale on either one, but I'm gonna need to get to some dealerships to drive them and figure out what's what.

My son is going to be driving soon and he's getting the xB so Dad's gonna need a new car :getin:

I’m biased because I’ve owned two different NDs but I also vote for the ND1 over the NC2/3. That said all Miatas are good Miatas so you really can’t go wrong.

Someone in the Miatas in Prediccs FB group (one of you?) posted this one spotted in the wild. Hard to tell but the top and seats are red. Almost makes me wish I still had my white one. Almost.

I stayed at a place last week that had a pearl white with black top ND in the parking garage and that thing looked amazing up close.

I need to go test drive an ND and see if I even fit before I spend much more time lusting over one. Comfy in an NC, cannot physically drive my brother’s NB.

There is no AC in a 16ND; the fuse and lines look fine but that's as far as my knowledge of AC systems goes. The button lights but the compressor does not engage and no cold air blows. There's a service bulletin for an issue with leaks but for earlier VINs. I looked with a giant blacklight at the indicated area but didn't notice anything remarkable [perhaps it has all leaked out?]. Is the compressor smart enough not to run if there's no refrigerant?

Yes. There is a pressure switch that will stop power from going to the compressor if its too low. I don't want to tell you too much though because I've never been under the hood of an ND and all my AC experience is older Jeeps. Nothing like trying to troubleshoot a problem while someone is feeding you non-applicable information.

I'm trying to find a removable bike rack to fit the trunk of an NC with a spoiler. I only need to move one bike around and dont need anything crazy heavy duty/dont want to install a hitch. Anyone got any suggestions?

Realistically best option is going to be a hitch mount or maybe one of the wish bone style bike rack.

If you have a hard top you could try one of the suction cup mounts with the top up.

this hail repair is a loving nightmare.

Went to "THE BEST SHOP IN TOWN"

didnt get me a quote for 10 days
geico dude met me there and they agreed to approve an additional $1300 to replace the roof instead of dent repair. (it comes painted)
I wait two weeks for "PARTS TO COME IN"
Take it into the dealer on tuesday. "DONE BY THURSDAY"
no contact
no contact
Finally get the guy on the phone today
"Yeah so they sent a silver roof to us, and one piece in black will be here quickly but the other will be here in October"
"ok can i get my car back until next month then"
"Suuuuuure but heheh little oopsie - we disassembled everything so we have to put it back together"

I'm seriously think about just selling this thing and taking the L. I'm so frustrated and upset.

My Fifth Gear Syncro Is On Grindr. :( And it's making a very slight whine. I'm trying to find a rebuild kit but for my '00 trans but for some reason I cannot. I guess I'll crack it open and just replace the bearings, synchros, and whatever else may be bad. Hopefully the gearset is ok. Has anyone heard anything about the carbon/moly synchros? I might do those just for shits.

flyin miat got some rims in and i'm tempted for the bronze

i can't imagine how grippy this gokart would be with 17x9 summers

if i got them i would buy a new badge/emblem set and bronze them out, i think bronze on black would be a spectacularly good look

and YES i know about te37s, and they look great, and they're also $2800 for a set and have a six month lead time

The implication.
Almost identical to the Konig Ampliform (though five spoke rather than six) in design and colour - I was tempted to chuck em on my ceramic metallic too but they're just not bronze enough for my taste.

They're lighter than ampliforms though, and look to have better clearance - do eet!

Ok y'all, it's time. I have a ten grand(ish) budget and I want to buy a Miata. From what I can see I've basically got two options:

A Really Nice NA or NB
An OK NC

I know I fit in an NA, I drove one around the block once with the soft up and I fit, but I'm 6'1" and there's no denying I'd be more comfortable in an NC. But, I dunno, the idea of buying a good condition 30 year old car is so much more appealing to me than owning an alright car that's still new enough that you see lots of heavily used ones on the road. It wouldn't be that usual to see an NC or ND on the road, but I can't think of the last time I saw a well maintained NA around here. But OTOH I despise OBDI and, less trivially, the NC is far, far safer in a collision.

I see two 1992 Sunburst Yellow NAs that sold on Bring a Trailer for 11k and that's a car that excites me in a way that a NC or ND costing two or thee times that amount doesn't.

Also, there's something more satisfying about spending enough to buy basically the nicest version of something, you know? It seems about ten thousand will basically let you have your pick of older miatas, whereas with a NC it'll be more of a compromise?

But if I lose my legs after getting tboned by a truck when maybe the more modern miata would have saved me, that's real. So maybe that's the more responsible choice?

I dunno, what do y'all think?

Applebees Appetizer
Jan 23, 2006

I didn't realize the NC is that much safer but good to know.

As someone who has owned 4 NAs they are fun but I'm ready to make the step up to the better car, an NC or ND. I would say if you can afford it get the better car.

I actually found the exact NC I want (NC3 Sport) in my area on Offerup and of course the seller is not responding lol, what is it with people that do that?

I guess I could be talking out of my rear end but a NC is just a generationally different car when it comes to safety: side impact air bags, better crumple zones, that stuff is just very very different in a car that debuted in 2005 vs 1989.

no the NA is scary to drive it's small, it's got 30 year old safety, your airbag is a suggestion (my sensors get borked when it rains or when its bumpy)
I love my NA but it only sees the highway on weekends when it's mostly empty or when I go to work at 6am when it's relatively empty. I don't like being near other cars in it becuase well.. it's invisible next to all those trucks/SUVs/CUVs that are on the road.

Except also has no where near the acceleration to remove yourself forward from a bad situation. Not slow, but yeah definitely small and unseen. Cool rear end car though, wish it were wet here less.

It has the handling and braking tho, I have definitely dodged bad situations by cranking the wheel one way or another without losing control.

I rode bikes for years and had people pull out in front of me just as much in a Miata lol

If this isn't a daily, go with the NA since it's the one that inspires something within you. You probably shouldn't spreadsheet your way through a fun car purchase. (I say this as I try to convince myself about going for an NC Miata instead of eating the extra money for the C5/C6 Corvette I'd really like.)

It would be a daily, but the NA does speak to me. It's absolutely what I want, I'm just not sure if it isn't borderline irresponsible to daily a car from the 80s, safety wise.

But if I wasn't thinking about safety, and you just asked me what car I wanted, it's the NA.

Get the NA. You're not going to be happy with something else. I daily an NB or a Jeep Grand Cherokee depending on weather and I have people not see me about equally. If people are paying attention at all they'll see a Miata. If they aren't paying attention they'll happily drive into a semi truck.

Having owned an NA, an NB, and now an NC, the NC is definitely the most “car”. The NA was definitely the most basic of the bunch, but I think the NC is more fun in addition to having more safety features.

It’s not a 100% fair comparison since my other Miatas were stock and the NC has Bilstein coilovers and an exhaust/tune, but I still feel like the NC would make the better daily. My kid’s friend who is like 6’3-4” even fit with the soft tip up.
